New MiniDisc or something else?

My 3-yr-old son has put me in the position of needing a new MD device. (He literaly ripped open my old MZ-NH800 to see what was in it)

What should I do now? Is MD gonna survive much longer? (considering people have been screaming it's death knell for years)

Should I get something else? What else has the removable media, that's a big plus for the MD in my book. I put tons of stuff on several MD's and then swap when I want to.

Do I get an MZ-NH800 or a RH1?

Is $265 for an RH1 over at Dealznet.com too good to be true? (http://www.dealznet.com/item.aspx?eid=1&pid=103592)

Thanks for the input.

The RH1 is a good choice if you do alot of actual live recording (RH1 remembers manual record levels), or if you have legacy discs (SP/LP2/LP4) lying around with older recorded material, as the RH1 can upload these (not NetMD discs made with SonicStage though).

As far as playback, the RH1 has a digital amp but lacks title/artists display on the main unit (shown on remote instead). Also it can playback Mp3 files directly, and is Mac-compatible.

If you like removable media, MD is pretty much your only choice, unless you prefer CDs or want to spend a lot more on flash. Legacy uploading is the main reason to get the RH1, though if you do a lot of live recording it's a nice bonus that it holds the settings (like Manual Volume) from previous sessions instead of defaulting back to AGC.

You may want to think twice about dealznet, since a Google search turned this up.

Aww, crap!

Got on about 2:30 and saw others talking about the RH1 and got excited. Thanks for the help though.

I looked at ResellerRatings.com (http://www.resellerratings.com/profile.pl?user=282173) and there's a couple of good reviews of late but they could be fake. Of course, so could the bad ones (I mean they could be overzelous in their crtique cause they got burned).

I don't know any more. My brother got nailed by BestBuy for stereo repair insurance. He got laid-off and they said he didn't call in time but he called earlier and they told him they need a lay-off letter, then 3 days after he got the lay-off letter they say he didn't call in time.

It's a coin toss who to trust now-a-days. Of course their are better and worse ones but I'm trying to be optimistic.

We'll see. At least I got a confirmation e-mail right away, lots of others didn't.

Let us know how it turns out. It would be great to have the RH1 at that price.

Well, it's looking better and better.

It's been going a little slow but I don't really care (it's just a music player). I finally got a UPS tracking ID and it looks like it'll be here 9/29 (Friday).

I'm gonna stay cautious for a little while longer, but it looks like I lucked out.

I'll post again when it gets here and lewt you know if it's new or used. Any pointers on how to spot refurbs?

Thanks for the help.

I bought a refurbished Sony CD player once (at a Sony store). It works fine, and the sticker that says "refurbished" is on there like white on rice, so if it's a Sony refurb you'll be able to tell.

If it's an item someone returned, you should be able to tell if the accessories bags are still taped shut and haven't obviously been re-sealed. Just like a new unit--any electronics can be a lemon--test all the functions when it arrives.

In China, MD fans curse MP3 units, and MP3 fans curse MD units...

I like MD units, but am afraid that traditional MD units will not survive long,

now In China you will see almost all people using MP3 units, and most of them don't know MiniDisc.

Some MP3 units made by Chinese company are VERY CHEAP: ¥400 for 512MB, ¥600~700 for 1GB, with Radio, and colourful or OLED display.

Once I took my red MD-DS70 on a bus, many surprised people stared at it; a girl asked: " Can you tell me what style of your MP3(my DS70) is?"...

@A440: Looks like I lucked out well.

The unit showed up Friday afternoon and I had to wait until I got home from work until I checked it all out. Then I had a friend call and ask for help so it was even longer!

But I got home and opened it up very carefully, fully expecting to not get what I ordered or get just the deck and nothing else... I am happy to report everything is fine! I opened the shipping box and there's the Sony box. I opened it and found more manualls then I could possibly use (Eng, Spa, Fre). It had the power adapter, the USB cable, a battery... It even had earbuds and a blank Hi-MD!!

No "Refurb" stickers anywhere. In fact the only stickers were the ones on the face to keep it from getting scratches. There was one on the remote as well. All in all I couldn't be happier!

And WOW is that thing fast! Transfer is wonderfull with this, my old NH800 made me want to make "playlists" and get everything organized before transfering since it took so long. This thing is wonderful.

And no translating MP3's!! They get dumpped just as easy as ATRAC. And sound just fine. I've got a disk right now with legacy ATRAC tracks on it and newly transfered MP3's and I have to look at the display to tell which is which.

Thanks for all the help guys. And if you want an RH1 for $265 go to Dealznet.com. They won't be fast or nice but they are cheap.
