knewknew Posted October 12, 2006 Report Share Posted October 12, 2006 Hello all, I am new the forum and to minidiscs. Anyway, I have decided to purchase one of the newer Sony HI-MD models. However, in reading the product descriptions I am left confused about one thing...Some models, such as the MZ-RH1, will state that the output line will be: 1/8" 'headphone jack' and 'line'. Where as a model such as the MZ-M100 will state that the output is just: 1/8" 'headphone jack'. How come some models have the 'line' out feature and others do not? For whatever its worth, I plan on using the device to listen to both headphones and hook up to my stereo as well. So should I stay away from the models that just list 'headphone' on the output? Now, if there is a difference of any kind, PLEASE let me know, I am very picky about my sound and would probably be able to tell. thanks guys, r Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
KrazyIvan Posted October 12, 2006 Report Share Posted October 12, 2006 In newer models it is almost interchangable. The headphone out is the line out. You just choose a menu option to change the output. The jack is still the headphone out. Even then it is not a true line out. It is basically the volume maxed out with all EQ bands set to zero. I am questioning the versatility of the one that they currently have. It seems that when reading the manuals certain MD models only are allocated for Headphone use and yet some are able to be used for headphone AND line-out applications. Why is this? raintheory Posted October 12, 2006 Report Share Posted October 12, 2006 (edited) In agreement with KrazyIvanThere is a setting in the menu/options for some newer models to select output as headphone/line-out ... no seperate physical jack for each.AFAIK line-out mode on units that have it simply strips all EQ settings and maximizes the volume (also volume buttons have no effect in line-out mode). A440 Posted October 12, 2006 Report Share Posted October 12, 2006 Why? Because Sony wants to save money and space on the unit and not build in a separate jack. The headphone setting lets you adjust the volume and use various EQ settings, so you can customize how your playback sounds through your headphones. If there is a "Line-Out" setting in the menu, it puts the volume on max and removes the EQ--that's because it expects you to adjust the volume and EQ on your stereo. But it's all just firmware. There is no difference between Line-Out, if that setting is in the unit, and turning the volume to maximum and removing EQ. You can play any unit through your stereo. You can play it with your headphone settings if you want, and adjust the volume on the unit. But if you were using a different EQ on your headphones, Line-out would sound different. riotshield Posted October 12, 2006 Report Share Posted October 12, 2006 can someone confirm that the line out on units that have one sounds exactly the same as the headphones with max volume and no EQ?i tried maxing the volume on the headphones and turning the eq off and the signal is significantlly lower than the line out of a cd deck, if that means anything. KrazyIvan Posted October 19, 2006 Report Share Posted October 19, 2006 I had an R900. It has the feature to change the headphone jack to a line-out or pseudo line out as I like to call it. I could not tell the difference between the line out mode and maxing the volume with no EQ.
