Say, a couple of years ago, Sony was putting out high-end Vaio desktop PCs which had MDLP minidisc decks in them. Does anyone know of anyone successfully getting one out of a Vaio and into a regular PC? Anybody know what kind of connector those used to get them into the system?

Thanks,

Z?

P.S. Anyone have one of those computers who'd be willing to crack the case and figure out how to do it?

yeah i remember those PC'S, i would've bought one too had i waited a little while longer. but hooking up a portable HiMD unit to the PC via USB is no big deal.

Are you referring to the NetMD module within the VAIO PCV-MXS10/MXS20 desktop? If you are, that particular VAIO NetMD drive (part number A8059329A) will not work with other PCs. This is because of the proprietary connectors and interface card employed by (both located within the NetMD module and the motherboard of the respective MXS10 AND MXS20 system) the aforementioned VAIO desktops.

Just to expand the topic in question: this particular VAIO NetMD drive is connected to the VAIO PCV-MXS10/MXS20 via a special IFX-179 interface card to the Sony Digital Audio System built into the VAIO system. The interface card is installed underneath the NetMD module (via another private cable) and it facilitates NetMD operations as well as supplying the NetMD module its power. Acquiring additional parts for the NetMD module is easy but it's virtually impossible to implement the Sony Digital Audio System onto a non-VAIO motherboard to conclude the connection so to speak. Therefore, chances of the internal drive working in a non VAIO PC are very slim.

If you intend to set up a NetMD drive for your PC, you can hunt down a Kenwood variant which will certainly work. However, they are hard to come by.

You can use the Sony Vajo PCGA MDN1 on any computer via USB. Follow the link:

It needs some soldering and works fine. What you also need is the drivers. The drivers for NetMD Walkmen don't work.

Get one at ebay and try.

Hello Kochi! Welcome to MDCF!

Thanks for the link. That is indeed a very intriguing project. If it's not too much trouble, would you enquire on our behalf if the author of the guide would provide an English version for MDCF? Thanks. ;)
