i was walking to the car and i slipped on some ice. luckily my instruments are ok (150 year old flute is fine!) but i fell on top of my mz-nh900, which was in its case in my bag. there is a slight dent on the front; the player will not turn on, and does not connect to the computer through usb. is it possible to get it fixed? my guess is no.

the rh1 on sony's site looks like it sucks. where's my beloved battery pack? a friend of mine from wisconsin has a minidisc player that looks to be the rh10 or m100 or whatever. i cant ask him because he is basically uncontactable. i liked his recorder and i remember he did too. i remember it had really easy editing and file managing on its big, blue led screen.

obviously that unit is no longer made. do i suck it up and buy the rh1? or do i go for another model, and if so, which one? if m100 is the way to g i found 3 places to buy the m100.

Always sad to hear MiniDisc-related injuries.

New unit?

There should be a "known problems" list somewhere, but...

The MZ-RH10 / MZ-M100 / MZ-RH910 / MZ-RH900

...have all been reported on numerous occasions as having "button weaknesses"...wherein the controls will fail doing what they're supposed to do after some time. Come to think of it, I've never seen the MZ-RH910 reported with a control problem, but seeing it's made the same way as the MZ-RH10, I think it would. It was just less popular here due to the lack of glowy screen...).

Might be something to keep in mind.

the rh1 looks ok... i'm still a bit grumpy about no battery pack, but i could get Macally’s IP-A481. i'm leery of the fact that the display on the unit is useless, and that you are required to use the remote to get any track information. the remote was the first thing to go on my nh900. can you record without the remote on the rh1? also, how is entering track information on teh rh1? it's doable on the mz0nh900, because of the scroll weel.

my mz-nh900 had button weakness. after researching a bit on the forum, the m100/rhwhatever seems to have the same problems my mz-nh900 had (before i fell on it), but worse. it's such a shame, too, because the m100 has the most amazing interface.

which recorder would you recommend?

There's always the MZ-NH700. Takes a good old AA battery and, in my experience, has survived a few drops to hard floors.

The M100 is higher-priced than the RH910 only because it's Mac compatible. Save the $$ if you don't need that feature.

some people complain about the paint chipping on the mz-nh700, and the battery latch. have either of these been a problem? i always carry my minidisc in a case, unless i am recording, so these arent huge issues.

can you record without the remote on the rh1?
none of the MD/HiMD-recorders requires the remote for recording (none of the remotes even features a rec button). The remote can even introduce static noises when recording more silent stuff so best not to connect the remote when recording

also, how is entering track information on teh rh1?
honestly? not worth the hassle! (just like on the NH900 or any other MD IMHO)

unlike the NH900 the RH1 has the timestamp feature so your recordings are 'named' after the date/time of recording and if you want to change this later, just connect to a PC or mac and use the provided software as this is so much easier/faster

there is a replacement option (which is $164). would they replace the unit, and which unit would they give me?

they'd better replace it or that service would really need a name-change

as to which unit they would supply is only for the sony-service center you're dealing with to know I'm afraid... but it will most likely be either an NH900 (with the risk of weird button behaviour again) or an RH10 as it was considered 'equal' by Sony. One thing you can almost be sure of is it will almost certainly be a refurbished recorder previously sent in and (hopefully) repaired by the service center

I'm using mine about once or twice a week average for live recording and carry it in a case most of the time, like you. I haven't noticed any paint coming off yet. The battery latch can dis-align/jump off from time to time (when putting it in/out of a tight pocket for example), but is easily put back. Unlike other models, even without the latch, the battery sits relatively tight and secure so it isn't really an issue for me.

My experience is like Greenmachine's. I carry it in a pocket without the case, so yes, after two years some of the lettering--MARK in MARK/REC and the raised SONY logo--is worn off. Probably where I grip it with my acidic fingers.

By then you should know where the buttons are anyway, and who manufactured it....

There's what seems to be a clear lacquer coating on that part of the unit--the smaller square that covers most of the front--so it's not like paint is flaking off the case, just that the painted lettering on top of the lacquer has been worn away.

If you have problems with the battery latch, you can always tape it shut, but it's not a problem for me. I often slip the unit in or out of a pocket and I just grip it by the battery bulge, so it doesn't open. In a case you should have no problem at all.

Even if it were to open, this is not like the old battery latch problems with the R900 or RH900, where the gumstick would pop out. Even if the battery latch opens, the battery stays connected.

The main reasons to get the RH1 are the legacy MD uploading (a big reason, if you need it) and the fact that it holds recording settings (a small convenience). Otherwise you're just as well off with the MZ-NH700 and, using the money you saved, the backlit RM-MC40ELK remote.

indeed, just get what suits your needs/wallet best:

- RH1 --> style / timestamp / lit display / legacy uploads / rec-settings memorized / uncripled MP3-playback / expensive

- NH700 --> 'all you really need' (recording-wise) / AA-battery / cheapish / looks cheapish

IMHO at this moment you can simply ignore all other models as they do not provide anything extra that is not outweighed by (possible) additional drawbacks (like the button malfunctions or cripled MP3-playback etc.)

some people complain about the paint chipping on the mz-nh700, and the battery latch. have either of these been a problem? i always carry my minidisc in a case, unless i am recording, so these arent huge issues.

Short answer:

I would recommend:

MZ-NH700 (no date/time stamp, jog dial, 3-line display on unit)

MZ-NHF800 (same unit as MZ-NH700 but with radio remote...but in the spirit of cost-cutting and same-modelness, you can't record off the radio, if that's what you're after)

MZ-NH1 (no AA batts, date/time stamp, no jog dial, SpeedControl, proprietary USB cable, 3-line remote, rudimentary 1-line on-unit display)

Long answer:

My MZ-NH700 has silver coming off all faces of the device where its painted. The thing is, I don't mind considering the price I got it for, but is it tacky? OH YES. Would it be better had they not made it silver? OH YES. There's a blue model out, too...not sure if it's in fact silver/blue coated deal and suffers from the same fate, or if it's 'real blue' plastic. Really don't know. Despite this, I prefer the MZ-NH700's jog dial and AA batteries so much more than the no jog dial and gumstick battery of the MZ-NH1.

Battery cover

MZ-NH700 battery cover has never been an issue to me (I slide it in its dust cover and then slide that into its belt-clip carry pouch..).

MZ-RH1

A good review on the unit can be found here.

I don't own the MZ-RH1, but despite this it might be the best recorder going if the public opinion is anything to go by (despite the on-unit display not showing track names or bookmarked tracks, etc). However, public opinion was great on the MZ-RH10 when it was released, too...mostly due to the huge display, only to end up suffering from button issues, some reported display issues, battery latch issues and other weaknesses...

Personally, (and this is my reliability-paranoia speaking)...

1) I don't expect the glowy display of the MZ-RH1 to last as long as an LCD (and I prefer LCDs for proper daylight viewing...). The life of the display in and of itself is worrying to me. Normally I wouldn't worry about such things, except with these new-fangled displays...

2) I have read a thread indicating 2 users have experienced the MZ-RH1 not saving a recording after it was stopped (this would spoil my day/week/year, depending on the importance of the recording. It may be a weakness with this model or just freak occurrence...I don't know.

---

And just to add more reliability paranoia to the mix, I'm a bit iffy on the USB speed improvements offered on the MZ-RH1. If these speed improvements were technically possible without reliability problems or trade-offs, why weren't they implemented in generation 1 and 2 models. Apparently the disc spins faster in this model. Keep in mind faster spindle speeds means less time the laser has heating up any given spot on the disc, yet Hi-MD/MD media hasn't changed formulations, so will the reliability be affected? I dunno. I also dunno if higher spindle speeds are also used when recording portably versus powered-by-usb...but it's an issue I might have issue with... :)

When all is said and done, I'd choose a Generation 1 device without button issues :) despite Generation 1 devices having their own track moving/erasing/combining bugs which I don't seem to remember the exact details of right now ;) Sony have been quite disappointing with the quality control on several models, IMO...

I have the blue model and the blue zone isn't blue plastic, but is under a clear lacquer. The painted labels (like MARK) on top of the lacquer wear off, but otherwise it's fine. So maybe it's better than the silver version.

There's some paint wear on the corners too. But this is after two years of very constant use, and I think it's minimal.
