UMWOOFWOOFF
Several weeks back I reported that Best Buy only had in stock at their stores NOS unsold minidiscs, most notably a vast amount of 2002 era Sony Gold Premium 80 minute discs. They also at that time had the multi-pack variety of the last Color Collection md's (you know, those cheezy ones where the entire top is laminated with some cheap clear overlay). Well, I went to Best Buy tonight and as my ritual occurs every time I go there, I went to the blank media section. Welp, whattaya know, NO more MD whatsoever. The 20 or so packs of the gold Sony's were GONE. All traces of MD in the entire store were gone. There USED to be some Color Collection discs up by the check-out isles (you know, where the miscellaneous stuff is as you walk out) but those are gone, too. I searched the entire store. I did find a store display hanger with a tag on it for the 5 pack of Sony Premium Gold's, so I brought that to a manager so he could look up the item number in the system. He stated, "No, it looks like we have sent all stock back." When I asked him WHERE this stock went, he wasn't sure. He said, "It wasn't on clearance, we just couldn't sell it, so it got returned to corporate." So, it looks like now is the time to watch eBay for vast dumping and unloading of the Sony Premium Gold discs. Someone somewhere must be buying them all up for pennies on the dollar. You can probably get good deals on eBay for them. As far as the Color Collection (for which there was no display tag anywhere) the manager stated, "Oh yeah, I remember those. We stopped those a few months back." Saddened, I went down the road to Circuit City, who always had a lot of old stock MD's at different places in the store. Well, that is no more. No Memorex, no Sony, no ANYTHING. Well, they did have about 20 Maxell head cleaners for $2.95 on clearance. When I asked there, I got the same story: "We couldn't sell them, so they were sent back. Circuit City doesn't sell minidisc anymore."Get on eBay everyone, if you still want discs. The only store (besides online) locally here that has any old stock is Target...but I'm sure they are just selling what they still have. Be on the lookout for the Sony Premium's to be closed out in lots on eBay from re-sellers. I bet Sony has discontinued those as well. The Low Volta
umwoof... you do have a hang for dramatisation so you actually mean to say that two shops don't have them anymore... well, I'll just pop off to create a "MiniDisc LIVES"-thread because I just found out that not only the major electronics chains overhere (Fnac; Mediamarkt; ...) offer legacy AND 1gb discs (well, Mediamarkt at least), but also a whole bunch of general grocery supermakets (Delhaize and Carrefour) carry legacy 80 min discs as well (TDK, Maxell)ok... and this conclusion is really far-fetchedI bet Sony has discontinued those as well.this thread is about not stocking/selling the discs...not about making them, not? Sparda
Futureshop, Bestbuy, A&B Sound, and the Sony Store all still have some stock left here in Canada. I know that the Sony Store restocks their shelves with more blanks from time to time. It seems like we still don't have to worry about blanks disappearing here. UMWOOFWOOFF
Wow, you guys in Canada and Belgium are lucky!!!Even Sears here (who hangs on to obsolete stuff for a long time) stopped carrying the discs. I bought several packs of long discontinued JVC Crystal discs a few months back for pennies on the dollar. I DO find it curious, however, the way the administrators here bury legitimate reports of the format's state; especially when it concerns something negative that we all must prepare ourselves for. It's as if they wish that the disappearance of MD would just "go away" rather than deal with it and stock up now while you still can. Ishiyoshi
You can rest assured that your thread being moved into the off topic section does not imply that we pay any less attention to your concern. It’s moved simply because you have yet again posted in the wrong section of the forum. For organization purpose, we would like to keep the Hi-MD section of the forum with discussion strictly pertaining to the Hi-MD format (the format is still alive as many users would say albeit only as a niche or “professional” recording market) – not with reports regarding the stock of MiniDisc media in the United States. I am sure you are aware that the “Off-topic” section at MDCF is as legitimate as any section of the forum. The administrators/moderators of MDCF treats every section of the forum seriously.I DO find it curious, however, the way the administrators here bury legitimate reports of the format's state; especially when it concerns something negative that we all must prepare ourselves for. It's as if they wish that the disappearance of MD would just "go away" rather than deal with it and stock up now while you still can.Must I explain to you that censoring or burying negative reports of the format’s state is not MDCF’s goal? Along with other forum members, we have been working hard to keep the spirit of the format alive and if I may say so, we are one of the biggest forums of MiniDisc and have supported it for ages with free resources along with support for the format. Just as Volta states in the preceding posts – “this thread is about not stocking/selling the discs...not about making them, not?” Thus, the reason for its moved to the present location. an0nym0usmuse
I've been following this thread as an RSS feed of the most recent posts, so it's not buried. Even the administrators wouldn't deny that Minidisc is no longer readily available at many retail outlets, at least in my part of the U.S. I doubt that you can walk into a retail store within driving distance of where I live and find either a player or blank Minidiscs. This simply confirms to me what I realized over a year ago--that Sony has abandoned attempts to mass-market Minidisc as an "mp3 player."Hopefully, however, Minidisc will still be available online. I like the format, and I have a lot invested in it. I would be happy for Minidisc to continue a while as a niche product. I've decided that I don't care whether what I like is popular with the masses or not. It still works for me, and that's all that matters. It's as if they wish that the disappearance of MD would just "go away" rather than deal with it and stock up now while you still can.Nothing personal, but I can't begin to tell you how off you are on this. With every inevitable "(Hi-)MD is dying! Run for the hills!" thread (I'm convinced they occur regularly in accordance with some esoteric natural law) there are far, far more realistic attempts to think/speculate through the situation. IMHO the admins and hardcores here, with their collective breadth of knowledge and IMHO, are particularly vigilant at contributing to a neutral field of inquiry and communication about this. And besides....it's portable audio; it's not Armageddon. peaceWaywardTraveller
King Ghidora
If anyone thinks the supply of MD's will dry up in the near future I suggest they have a look at this web site. If that technology is still kicking then MD will be around for our grandchildren to use.
Number Four
Ha ha... NICE! There are a couple of record shops near where I live that still sell quite a bit of 8-track stock. Not to mention ebay... I prefer my MD. More to the topic, have any of you ever worked in retail before? If you have, you'll know what I'm talking about: the guy that is wearing the nametag/vest/flair doesn't really know anything about the ordering practices of the corporation at large (in fact, most inventory and stock of stores is controlled at a regional or district level, meaning that stores in different regions have different stock). I can't tell you all how many times I've had to "guesstimate" about the inventory of a warehouse. Just some food for thought. Plus, an official cancellation of product would definitely be newsworthy, and would be reported either here or at minidisc.org. You can still find MDs/HiMDs, but it'll probably take a little more driving (especially if you don't live in an urban area).
