I use a sont mz-nh700 mini disc witha sony ecm-719 mic for my live recordings. When i set up the recording mode,i always have it set in lp2 mode. What i dont know is what format is this recording in,when it set to lp2 mode. Most gigs that i record are about 2 hours long which is why i use lp2 so there is no need to change discs.

the reminder: please do not create double threads...

the answer: LP2 = atrac3 @ 132kbps

the truth: a quick look in the user manual, a search on these forums or a quick browse of minidisc.org could have told you this as well (and those options would also give you an explanation of atrac3 and 132kbps and the other possible formats etc.)

It says in the manual its best to record in lp2 or hi-sp mode for best results.I might try hi-sp next time and see if i can notice any difference( although i dont know if my ears are good enough) in quality.Im going to be recording a couple of tribute bands soon,so that will be a good oppotunity. At the moment im uploading my recordings to my pc by connecting my md to pc via line in on my pc.I save it with an audio/editing program and save as wav.

SP (292kbps), LP2 (132kbps), LP4 (66kbps) and MONO (146kbps) are older recording modes, mainly included for backwards compatibility. If you don't need to play your MDs on older equipment, there's no benefit of using them to my knowledge. In Hi-MD mode the disc will be formatted differently so that the disc space can be used more efficiently (almost twice the space compared to MD disc mode). The available Hi-MD modes are PCM (1411kbps), HiSP (256kbps) and HiLP (64kbps). Hi-SP yields significantly greater fidelity than LP2, the available recording time per disc will be just a few minutes shorter (still more than 2 hours on a standard MD). Hi-MD mode recordings can also be uploaded digitally (no quality loss) faster than realtime via USB connection, whereas MD mode recordings cannot (with the NH700). To set the recorder to Hi-MD recording mode, go to Option -> Disc Mode -> Hi-MD.

Other than that, i would suggest to get at least one 1GB Hi-MD disc. The available recording time will increase approximately by the factor of three, so that you can record more than 90 minutes in PCM (uncompressed, CD quality), almost 8 hours in Hi-SP (compressed, high quality) or an awful lot in Hi-LP where quality isn't a primary concern.

Thanks,im trying to understand all this and hopefully get round to making better recordings.Ive made loads of recordings all in lp2 mode.So if i record in hi-md mode( on a standard 80 min disc) that will be better than what ive been doing. As long as it can record for 2 hours then thats fine.

To be honest, if you find you can't notice the difference then you need to see an ENT specialist! :pleasantry:

In short: LP2 = Nasty. Hi-SP = Sweet! 1GIG discs = close to 8 hours of Hi-SP recordings.

Statement: There is absolutely no point in owning a Hi-MD recorder and using LP2 mode to record.

This would be like owning a jacuzzi and never turning on the bubbles.

Just to prove im learning( very slowly) i went to try and set my hi-md to hi-sp mode( just testing).I put a disc in and tried to set it to hi-sp.I only got the options lp2,lp4,mono and sp.So i blanked the disc and then like magic it showed up in hi-md hi-sp mode.So finally looks like im learning something, and will improve my recordings next month.I cant be grateful enough for the pricless bits of help ive got from people on here. :)
