insch Posted February 6, 2007 Report Share Posted February 6, 2007 I have used a MZ-RH10 for some time but I am hugely frustrated at the lack of Mac upload. I have no desire to buy a PC to rectify this but may look at Virtual PC. I am now considering getting an iPod with a mic - possibly the griffin iTalk Pro http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/italkpro/ but wondered if anyone had tried it and compared it with Hi-MD? It works at 44.1/16 bit so there's one comparison - it apparently sounds pretty good, especially if you connect an external mic to the iTalk housing whcih you can do (cuts out machine noise). I want to do environmental/atmospheric recordings for use in pieces of music and I want as good quality as possible at this very portable size.I know there is a newer Hi-MD with the Mac upload option but I'm kind of sick of Sony and what seems like their anti-Mac policy.Thoughts greatly apprecitated.thanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
boojum Posted February 6, 2007 Report Share Posted February 6, 2007 This is a little off-topic, but I do not think that SONY or anyone else has an "anti-Mac" policy. The truth is that Mac is a tiny section of the user base, < 5% and while its user base is growing, its market share is shrinking or barely staying the same. So why spend the time and effort for so few users? It is pretty simple.I would go with the RH1 which is Mac compatible and a damned fine machine. Ipods are made for playback and will grudgingly accept recording inputs. It's possible that neither an iPod nor a MD unit will be quiet enough for you, so you might also a consider a flash recorder like the Edirol R09 if absolutely silent operation is important to you. I've now done a bit more research and it appears that there is no level control available for the iTalk iPod set-up even though they say 'adjustable gain settings give you control over the volume' on Griffin's site - that just means you have a high + low switchable setting. That's not good enough for me. I like the neatness of the iPod set-up but it doesn't appear that I'm going to get he quality I need. I don't know maybe it is worth it to get a whole other computer for the purposes of running Windows programs. Might come in handy in the future. Have you considered the flash based alternatives?
