RH-1 operational noises

Hi,

I was wondering what people's experiences with the RH-1, and what it sounds like when functioning normally. My unit seems to be reasonably quiet when recording, but when trying to access a 80-minute, Hi-MD formatted disc via USB, it seems vary, from fairly quiet and slightly buzzy, to louder and almost rattly. It doesn't seem to be as noisy when accessing a 1 GB Hi-MD disc.

What's your experiences with this? When should I be worried? I'll try post audio samples of it soon.

Thanks,

Evan

My RH-710 makes all sorts of noises when accessing a disk. As long as it works I wouldn't worry.

I find that the RH-1 is more prone to disk noises as well. In particular I have a couple of Fuji 80 min minidiscs that make a heck of a racket in the RH-1 but not my other minidisc devices, so much so that I can only use those 2 or 3 disks in my other recorders. Maybe clearances are tighter in those disks, and the spindle is off-center? I've never worried about it because most disks work fine.

I haven't used my NH-1 in NetMD mode, so I can't speak to it. I guess I was just curious as to if there were any ways differentiate normal functioning and impending mechanical failure, as I've had two MZ-R70's die on me in the past. Anyway, it's good to hear what other people have noticed with their own units.

Thanks,

Evan

Takes a fair amount of abuse to kill the R70 ..... mine lasted over 6 years ( just sold it recently, still working )

My RH1 is considerably louder than my NH1 when the laser head is moving. However spinning noises don't seem to be a problem. The instructions manual did say mechanical noise is normal, and is part of the "power saving mechanism".

I wouldn't worry about it. My N910 makes a shrilling screeching noise sometimes when the laser head tracks, and it's done that for the past year without it failing. Its still doing well right now.

Bear in mind, a 1gb HiMD disc is quieter because the bits a smaller than a 74min disc, so it doesn't have to spin as fast to get the same data rate (okay, it's just a theory but it sounds good :D).
