Try going to Disc Mode in the menu, and select Hi-MD when you get to the MD/Hi-MD selection mode while in it. Don't forget to use the jog dial to go to Disc Mode, press enter, then select Hi-MD, then in recording mode (Rec Mode) select Linear PCM

P.S.: your selection setup must be in Advanced instead of Simple to be able to access it. I had to do that with my MZ-NH700 as well.

Good suggestions but I think I've already covered them.

1. I'm already in advanced menu mode because when I insert a H-MD the FORMAT option is there.

2. The 74min MD is empty because when I insert it the display says "BLANKDISC"

3. The only "REC mode" options available when the 74min MD is inserted are SP, LP2, LP4 and mono

Looks like catch 22 to me. You can't get there from here. Any more ideas?

If a MD with MD mode recorded tracks is inserted (or the MD is empty and you're in MD recording mode), the "Format" option does not appear. Use "Erase ->All Erase" instead, which will basically do the same as the "Format" option.

Once the MD is empty and you're in Hi-MD recording mode or the disc contains Hi-MD mode recorded tracks, the "Format" option should appear.

Once you have put the 74 min disc in, go to Option => Disc Mode => Hi-Md. Go to Edit => Format. Finally Go to Rec Settings => Rec Mode => PCM.

Eureka! :good: That's it. "Disc mode" not "Rec mode", which is what I was trying. Doh! Well done Rich and thank you.

Try going to Disc Mode in the menu, and select Hi-MD when you get to the MD/Hi-MD selection mode while in it. Don't forget to use the jog dial to go to Disc Mode, press enter, then select Hi-MD, then in recording mode (Rec Mode) select Linear PCM.

Apologies BIGHMW for not reading your reply carefully enough  . I was getting REC mode and DISC mode mixed up.
