I bought my R50 about four years ago, got in NIB, amazingly. I have never recorded anything with it, use it with a headphone amp and Audio Technica ATH-A900's. The line out is superb, as you know. The headphone out is decent but nothing special over the MD units of its time, although the 5 mW/16 ohms is louder than any of my other Sony units with the same specs.

The R50 is a tank, for sure, should last forever. For practical recording purposes, its battery life is just too short, it's a clunky thing, and it doesn't have on-the-fly adjustments. If you are lucky enough to ever find one that has the SCMS-stripper circuit, you can make digital copies.

I enjoy using my R50 but I am not any more in love with it over some of my other units.

You reaaly should record some stuff with it , and Make a Batt pack with parts from Radio Shack , A 4 cell AA holder that has a 9volt type connector on top , and then a Cable to go from that to the MD Gives you a quick recharge ,on the go !

I owned two of them at one time (around 2004) along with about 4 MZ-E40s and a couple of MZ-F40s as well, but MDLP came calling (through the MZ-R700 and MZ-G750), and so did internal single "AA" battery use, so I either gave them out to friends to get 'em into MD or sold them on eBay (big mistake!).

So , just who really has some MD History ???

the mz-r50 was what got me started in the MD world. i used the optical line out on my ps2 to burn md's i loved it because i could use the jog dial to label tracks, and if there was an album that had a long pause before another song i could use it to delete the pause and make it another track. that was the quintessential MD palyer as far as i was concerned, i had the external add on batterypack and the clip on joggers attachment that had a little screen on it as well, unfortuantely somebody stold only the MD player and left me the rest. i would give just about anything to own another one!

i had everything in this picture but the wall charger.

CAN THESE STILL BE FOUND/ BOUGHT!?

i have one of those newer net md players and i just dont like it i cant do shit with it, and since i have a MD head unit in my cadillac

, im forced to burn low quality md's with it, i still have some of the md's i recorded with my 50 and they sound amazing on my stereo vice this other player i have...

I`ve had my MZ-R50 for about 5 years now. I looked into the whole minidisc scene long and hard before I decided that it was the best available. They had been discontinued by the time I bought my first unit but I managed to get a near mint condition one off Ebay for £75. I then bought a MDS-NT1 to connect directly to the computer and that came with a free MZ-E501. I sold that on Ebay for £100 and then spotted a brand new MZ-R50 (minus the charger) for the ridiculously low price of £60 so I snapped it up. I have never used the second one, only just to test it all to ensure that it works. As for recording with the MZ-R50, I have probably recorded about a dozen albums with it as I record everything on the MDS-NT1 because its easier and quicker. I often use it to record conversations with an old microphone that came with an even older PC. All in all, I would not part with either of my MZ-R50`s, they`re brilliant peices of kit. Although I have an MZ-RH10 Hi MD unit and an NW-HD3 which are both very nice, they are nowhere near as good as the MZ-R50, a truely marvellous machine.

I own a silver R50. Great machine! I have tried to sell it a few times, but it wasn't meant to be, and now I'm glad that I still on this nice MD-recorder!

I did use it a lot to record with and use it's great line-out. Lately I haven't used it a lot, maybe I've become lazy and addicted to recording with the PC (RH1).

I once did own an orange R50. I got it of ebay and unfortunatly the unit was scratched and in bad shape cosmetically. It did work though.

I sold it and must admit that I haven't regret that choice. I have to have a mint one or none at all.

Can't wait for your pictorial Isshi!
