Just got the new MDS-JE480.

I have other older home units. But I do not see time remaining button or anything either on the unit or remote.

Can it be you cannot ever see time remaining? Never seen any digital player for home, CD etc. that at least did not have time remaining on the unit. thanks.

New strange thing:

ON this new unit, I have track 1 on pause and I hit record, to record over it, but instead of recording over the track nothing happens.

I tried the remote and the unit.

Could it be possible there is no 'record over exisiting track" ?? thanks.

That function left a long time ago , now every unit ( basically all of them , there are exceptions ) The basic setup is now "Record from End" if the unit has an "End Search " buton , then record over is in it , elsewise somewhere in the record menu settings , "Record from Here" or Record From End" might be available , it is on the RH1 and others , but the Home deck might have the removed as a protectionary measure.

Guitar:

I don't follow you.

Anytime you hit record you are recording from the end anyway.

If you have five tracks and hit record you are now recoding from the end to a 6th track.

But this was a nice feature to record over the pre-existing track? It's history?

exactly , it will record from the end of what is already there, if you look in the record settings menu , look for "From Here" of "From End"

As kevs mentioned, the previous generation of decks had the "record over" feature - play the track, press pause at the required point then record. Eg. my JE640 does this and presumably also the JB940 etc., but my JB980 doesn't. They also took away the handy AMS divide function - which gave you dynamic track divide/rehearse by a press of the AMS button. It's all done by menus in the last generation. One reason I still hang on to my old decks...

great info Barock, curious, now, you guys are in my boat I guess.

I got my first home deck in 1998. I have ipod etc, but still love MD for home recording.

What is future of minidisc, home deck, MD media?

I'm 45 and plan on using this medium till I'm 100. So I'm buying few used decks and new decks to be safe -- worry bit about media though.

The outlook for MD doesn't look too good at the moment, though I reckon I've stockpiled enough blanks, portables and decks to keep me going beyond the caring stage.

Who knows, maybe someone will buy out the format and keep it going or maybe even Sony will ressurect it. Fat chance really, but I'm still enjoying MD while I can...
