Brown Teddy Bear
Re: Sony SonicStage 4.3 Install Problem Hello everybody, This is my second time on the forums so please excuse me if I've posted this in the wrong place. I'm currently having major problems with Sony Sonic Stage as it will not install. When I try to install either version 3.4 or 4.3, I get this message in a dialog box with a red cross:>An error (-5009 : 0x8002802b) has occurred while running the setup. Please make sure you have finished any previous setup and closed other applications. If the error still occurs, please contact your vendor: Sony Corporation.<Then the installation closes. This is what I've tried doing without success:* Installing in safe mode* Installing to a different directory* Manually removing the Sony Sonic Stage directory and the Sony Shared directory and then reinstalling. By this I mean deleting them. * Uninstalled the Open Module information in control panel as well as the patch.* Removed Sonic Stage using another uninstall program after windows uninstall failed. * Tried to install 3.4, 4.3 full versions; and a 4.3 upgrade version.I'm currently using Windows Vista Home Premium and have 2GB of RAM with a 1.8 GHZ Processor. There's eight gig free on the hard disk. I'm logged on as an Administrator when installing. Sent the computer to my technician and he had no luck either. He's no mug with computers but he thinks it would take a highly skilled computer user to fix this problem. I also contacted Sony and they made the same suggestions as above and are now referring it back to their software engineers. A thought I had was it may be something to do with the registries. Please note this has worked on this computer before and I've only tried to remove it as I've had to reinstall several burning programs after modifying the 'REGEDIT' in Vista so that the CD / DVD Drive would be recognised. Interestingly, the same error message appeared when I tried to uninstall the software too. I could only uninstall Sonic Stage through another uninstall program. I also know that Snoci Stage 3.4 won't work in Vista but I was trying to at least install it to see if I could get 4.3 working as the full version of 4.3 didn't work. Thanks for taking the time to read this problem. I'm quite disappointment with the hassles I'm having as I bought a walkman about a year ago for my dad and he's been using Sonic Stage ever since. Well, until this problem. Thanks again and I possibly look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards,
sfbp
Quick comment: I would start with removing all traces of any earlier versions. You may even have to go to the extent of installing an old version on some machine you don't care about, then seeing what changed in the registry, in the windows directory and in the windows\system32 directory. Worst case, do it on a virtual machine so you can throw the whole experiment away (you don't need to activate a Vm copy of Windows, because you will throw it away).I'd be surprised if this didn't allow me to isolate the problem. Unfortunately I have no desire to run Vista any time soon.Bottom line: uninstall everything you can find to do with Sony/SonicStage, and also PXEngine. It's very probable you should deinstall the burning programs too, in the first instance. I don't like the sound of having to diddle with the registry to get CD or DVD burners going. Once you do that you are in deep doo-doo. Another thing is to try and clean up the device map. There are probably all sorts of CD and also USB devices that just lurk, waiting for you to reinstall something. Probably you have to get rid of all traces of them from the registry. This is a job for an expert, certainly I have only been able to do it using other people's tools that clean up the registry. There's an excellent utility from Microsoft called (argh, cannot remember) that diagnoses the WMI subsystem. Google it and you'll see - may will find some inconsistencies in your setup as a result of messing the registry.
Avrin
This is an InstallShield problem. SonicStage 4.x uses InstallShield 10.1 to install itself, and some of its components are misconfigured. I have no idea about paths in Windows Vista, but under Windows 2000/XP you may go to the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\10" folder, find a folder called "01" there, and rename it to, say, "01.bak". This will cause InstallShield to reinstall its runtime components for this particular version. On the Internet you may find recommendations to delete the entire "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional" or "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield" folder. NEVER do this! This may cause problems when installing/uninstalling other programs, which are using other versions of the InstallShield engine.UPDATE: Just checked SonicStage 3.4. It also uses this version of InstallShield. Edited June 28, 2008 by Avrin
Brown Teddy Bear
Hey guys, Thank you so much for your responses. Avrin, you were completely correct. Unfortunately though, I made a pretty bad mistake and did delete the Install Shield folder before I had a chance to read your message. I was able to restore it through the recycle bin though. However, I chose not to replace the files which Sonic Stage had freshly installed in the Install Shield folder. I haven't encountered a problem yet and my technician thinks it should be ok. I don't know. Perhaps you have other ideas. Sonic Stage works now but it still won't let me create an audio cd or indeed doesn't recognise the cdrw burning device at all like it recognises the walkman. However, it does recognise a music cd which I can import but just won't let me create anything. I'm also running IMGBurn, ITunes and Nero as burn engines and I'm thinking they may have put something out of place. I also edited the REGEDIT file and that may have done something. Personally, I don't like burning in SonicStage but my dad loves it. Thanks for your help again. It was much appreciated and I possibly look forward to hearing from you again.Regards, BTB
Brown Teddy Bear
Hey guys, Sorry about that. I fixed this burning problem with Sonic Stage by downloading a pxengine file from the Sony website. Seems I had an old engine. Thanks,BTB

Richard
This comes up a real lot, we ought to create a sticky how to with the PX Engine suggestion and where to download it. As it seems to solve a lot of problems. It's in the Sonic Stage faq here: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=8071 - but I will double check to find out the latest version for download and update the link in that post.
