Busted NH1 remote...

I figure you are the only guys around who can help me out with this.

I'm still using my NH1, partially because I love it, and partially because I currently am too broke to pay the 350 for an RH1. Unfortunately, the remote for it just... died. For some strange reason, nothing shows up on the display anymore, and the buttons don't work. Though for some reason, every now and then when I hit the play button, it fast-forwards. and if I hit fast forward, the volume goes up.

This is the second time that I ended up with a busted remote, though the first time was my fault since it had gotten crushed by a car door (fell out my shirt pocket without me knowing). Now, these things are expensive. I was lucky to get the current dead one at 75 bucks, since I know these things go for $100. I don't have the scratch for that again, so I was wondering is there any other remote that will still give me access to all the NH1 features, just minus the triple line screen. I know that because of the way the NH1 was designed, you can't access everything without it's remote, but I was wondering if it's just that remote that can access everything, or is there another cheaper one that can do the job?

Specs I've found on the RM-MC11EL don't single it out for compatibility, but they don't single it out for incompatibility either. It would be better to get prior confirmation from someone here first, obviously--but since they run $10 USD or less including shipping I'd say that's a pretty cheap gamble.

This is from this site's "...Guide To Sony LCD Remotes":

RM-MC38EL -- supplied with MZ-NH900 (NA) and MZ-RH1. Same features as the 33EL, with the addition to a Hi-MD input on the LCD.

*Please note: the MC38EL is 100% compatible with all other 1st and 2nd generation Hi-MD units.

Not that I know of. By the way, similar thing happened to me with that remote. Crazy things happened with button operation...and I thought I'd get it replaced early, but I still haven't managed to swallow the cost. When I get the replacement I will probably use it far more sparingly.

I just figured out what goes wrong with remotes, after I read somewhere how they operate - namely they change the resistance at the unit.

Clearly bad connection at the point where the remote plugs in is the problem. Take the connector out, spray it with contact cleaner, and reinsert (probably BEFORE all the cleaner has evaporated).

This revived an otherwise completely unresponsive RM-MC35ELK for me. I may have even thrown out one of the ones with an FM radio built in before I discovered this, woe is me!

I tried Isopropyl Alcohol on the gold contacts after you said that... no go so far, however the behaviour did change: It doesn't want to record straight after I plug it in (which is what happened before).

The <<| and |>> lever still tried to adjust volume as I pressed the |>> side once (other times it did what it was supposed to). The LCD display, however, has decided now to only intermittently work (before I would have no issues). Hrm... I think mine might be beyond sane repair :P Plus who knows where I put those extra screws (I didn't bother to put it back together last time I pulled it apart :P)
