Kevin - I wonder what "simultaneously" means? I find that it stops the display as soon as you press "clear" or indeed any other button, as mentioned somewhere in one of the manual you can press any key on remote to achieve the same effect.

So you think you can get rid of it for good, or just till the next power on? (I'm trying it out but those 10 minutes' sure add up)

Aside from it being annoying, I do find that the demo display can have a use - alerting me to when I left the deck on by accident.

Hm, simultaneously seems to mean just that - both together at exactly the same time, with very little margin for error. Just tried it now on the 640, and even a slight delay meant the demo wasn't turned on or off. A Demo On/Off message is helpfully shown if you manage it. There's clearly a knack to it.

I'm not sure how permanent it is anyhow, demo will come back if you turn the power off, and who knows when else?

Maybe the earlier decks can't turn demo off - seems no mention in older manuals I've perused. On the other hand, my JB980 manual doesn't seem to mention it either. Maybe there's no demo mode. In any case I always have an MD inserted, so perhaps that's the answer if demo mode becomes an annoyance...

Pressing Stop and Clear together seems to be the combination that does this on some later decks (eg. my MXD-D40 and MDS-JE640).

However, I can't find any mention of this in the JB920 manual (http://minidisc.org/...b920_manual.pdf) or other manuals for decks of that vintage. Worth trying Stop and Clear in any case.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion. I'll try that. I did check the manual and noticed the note about pressing any key to clear it but of course that is only temporary. I am looking to see if there is a way to get ride of it for good.

I tried the STOP/CLEAR method using the remote. It did turn off the demo on my MXD-D40, but the demo returned after a while. Next, I tried it using the front panel STOP/CLEAR buttons. That turned off the demo -and- displayed the "Demo Off" message (the "demo off" message did not appear using the remote). The manual states that the demo will remain off until the machine is unplugged.

I next turned off the D40, but did not unplug it. I turned it back on and waited. No demo, and it's been well more than 10 minutes now. This is good. I'm going to try it on my my JA333ES and see what happens.

Like you i tried doing it on the remote with my JE-440 and JB-930 but just comes back on 10 mins later. So i thought i'd try on the front panel but i've only got "clear" and no "stop" there,i did try holding the "clear" and the suare stop button at the same time but still comes back on after 10 mins.

The Stop 'n' Clear method should work for the JE440, as it appears to be essentially the same as the JE640 (apart from the odd bell/whistle), they even share the same manual.

Not so sure about the JB930,as this seems to belong to the previous (non-MDLP) generation with no mention (that I can find) of disabling Demo mode. I suspect this 'feature' was brought in possibly by popular demand with the introduction of new-fangled MDLP capable decks, but I may be wrong...

if I would not turn off demo, because the demo features will protect the VFD display lights. In inactive status, not all content on the VFD lights are displayed. After a period of dark spots always will fade comparison with bright points always. Demo feature will assist on a uniform brightness lamp by opening rotating on/off the point in waiting time.

That's something I did not think about and a good point. Since I sometimes have my unit on for long periods of time, I think I'll take your advice and just let it go as it is.

Thanks.

I know I mentioned that. The MXD-D40 manual says that is how it's done. But I did unplug the deck and I'm still not getting the demo mode. The deck is a JPN model and can be just a bit flaky sometimes, so maybe this is just one of those things. I am going to try leaving it unplugged overnight.

I don't see in the D400's svc manual how to do a resume clear. How's it done?

{edit]: Actually, a factory reset is done by unplugging the deck, then plugging it in while holding down the power button. I did this and the deck initialized. However, still no demo mode. I guess I will have to live without it. Thanks for your suggestion.

[edit #2]: The same factory reset (power off - unplug - concurrent plug-in/press power-on) worked as specified for my MXD-D40, which now has demo mode restored. It's the D400 that is now demo-less.

There is no mention of demo mode anywhere in the MXD-D400 manual. I am now wondering if it even has demo mode. My comments from the original discussion are about the MXD-D40. Does anyone else out there have a D400? If so, do you get demo mode?

(BTW, I added some edits/comments to my immediately prior post.)
