Look what Sony still makes....

Ha! How about a demand to Sony that they create and market a USB turntable that converts those "old school" vinyl recordings directly to any of the minidisc codecs; thus to satisfy all the minidisc users to whom they sold that format for 20 years.

Does anyone know the total sales figure(s) for Sony Mini Disc units of all types from introduction to the recent discontinuation?

Reading the reviews on the Sony website gives a most interesting profile of the consumers who bought this product.

My biggest concern based on what I see is what the specs of the turntable, tone arm and cartridge are like. It's all very well trying to clean things up with Sound Forge but if the quality isn't there in the first place.....

I recommend the way I do it: Technics SL1200 and a really good cartridge to good audio amp with Phono preamp, (inexpensive standalone preamps are apt to be dreadful), analog out to 24-bit MD (Type-R or better), upload with MZ-RH1 to PC, edit with Sound Forge.

But it's entirely possible that the package Sony came up with produces as good a result if the WAV output option is used (one review seemed to say that was possible). Certainly easier.

Interesting...

This unit in addition to the usb output also has rca audio jacks so it is geared for someone who wants to play vinyl and listen on a stereo - it is a regular turntable and the reviews say it is well built. Does anyone have one of these?

My head spun when I saw this. Sony would only make something if there was a market for it. I guess there is a market for vinyl. I have not seen any marketing for this to me it is an obscure piece - what other obsure devices does Sony make?

What kind of audio to digital converters are in these types of usb turntables? Or is the conversion to digital done in the PC?
