AVITWeb
Good morning folks. I was wondering if there are any fellow NH900 owners out there (hopefully who own or know) that know the model number for the US power adapter that came with it? I have an Aus model that I bought years ago (using a converter (bad) and I just bought a used one on eBay from the UK. I really want to avoid converting because it's really hard to find a quality product that does it well. I have the adapter from my 510 standard MD which seems to match the specs but I'm not sure I want to take the chance in using it. Thanks in advance. sfbp
N510 and NH900 should both be fine, it's a relatively standardised PS across NiMH minidiscs. 3V. Some examples: AC-ET305K AC-ES3010K2 The Aussie one you have may be AC-ES3010K The different one for charging Li-Ion is usually 6V such as AC-MZ60 and these 6V supplies are often (but not always) coloured green instead of orange. You should find model numbers in the service manuals, here in our downloads, or at minidisc.org.
AVITWeb
Thanks...The only difference I noted is the amperage. Aus version is 1A and the US version is 500mA. Will this cause a problem? Would the ES3010K2 work without a problem? I just don't want to fry my recorders. Thanks in advance.
PhilippeC
I bought my NH900 as new in thailand in 2005-2006. I used after some years a chinese external multi-purpose charger - "Winstar NA-10" - that I fixed to an output DC 3V - 1000mA. I have tested to small 500mA brother of this charger and I did not work as well as the 1000mA charger. http://www.tradetuber.com/golden-edge/product-40022/Winstar---Linear-Adaptor-NA10.htm Please note that my NH900 got problems after some years but I don't know if it was because of a bad output amperage of the charger. Work done last year by Jim Hoggarth "For the repair of your Sony MZ-NH900 minidisc unit, serial number 5050284: Replace motor assembly (intermittent speed problem) Replace optical pickup assembly (low laser output) Clean jog dial and key switch contacts Polish battery terminals Remove label residue from disc slot metalwork Test battery charge capacity Adjust laser power settings Full service and extensive test Guaranteed for six months"
AVITWeb
Thanks for the information. I have been using mine as well from around the same time and I often wonder if my converter is part of the problem. I wonder it screwed with the power. I may have to have it serviced at some point soon. Trouble now is finding a good converter/adapter somewhere. Thanks again!
sfbp
One method would be to buy a $200 regulated power supply. That's what is used to service machines. Then you can be sure. Another is to "revive" the gumstick batteries with a refreshing charger such as the BC700 - look for another thread or I will post a link. IMO, there should be no difference between SONY powersupplies of 500mA and 1000mA... both way overspecified. I would put any oddness down to using some random third party PS such as the one in Philippe's picture (sorry Philippe but this is my bitter experience! Sony doesn't always specify ALL the PS characteristics). I know that "multi-voltage" PS's that I have used in the past a. deliver random voltage and current b. are quite good at blowing themselves or the item being charged. I could give you chapter and verse but I fear it may be 2.5 more years before you listen again. Your (wall charge) PS is emphatically NOT the culprit in what happened to your NH900. I guess I'm nobody. I like you, Gordon.
AVITWeb
Good to know. Trolling through the forums here, it seems the Sony AC-E30A should do the trick, however. Have you had experience with it yourself? ...and no, it will not be 2.5 years again. Not that it matters much, that's a promise.
