Question about playing SP formats on LP2 machines.

Hello, I bought an old Sony MZ-N710, mainly because I wanted "top cheap hi-tech". Ok long story short, I was in high-school when I've seen this in Bomfunk MC's - Freestyler, and I was like: "man I would kill for such a thing". Those formats never been popular in Romania (where I'm from) since our country was in deep poverty. Ok, so long story short I had to be 35 years old to get one, second hand, from my country and I paid a hefty 100 Euro for it. ....Ok, meanwhile I'm all FLAC's and studio monitors, high-end professional stuff, but I want to use my MD also. The only problems I have is how to use a "Loseless" format with my unit working with LP2 compression? I know this was called SP, but after some diggings on forums, they say: man no matter if you are recording your music through your optical IN when you play it back the sound will be like LP2 compressed. Well to be fair it would be a possibility for me to find out about this myth (if myth or reality) using experiments and software for comparing things, but my question is, is this true? Is any other way around?

P.S. Looking to buy a Hi MD now and hopefully one disc (since they are rarer than gold). I looked some time ago (years) for the top spect model from Sony and a guy wanted like 6000 USD on it so.. nooo thanks I'm paying this.. no way.. my car is cheaper than this.. no way.

Taking the last first: you don't need a hIMD disk to do hiMD. You can format a normal MD disk to HiMD standards. Of course it won't hold as much but still almost double what SP holds.

You misunderstood about transfers? USING USB you cannot get better than LP2 (which is pretty good) when you make a "FakeSP" disk. Using optical, however, you can get good recordings (provided you remember that only 33, 44.1 and 48 kHz are allowed, and 44.1 is preferred) in SP.

If you record to the N710 via its optical input in SP mode, that is exactly what you will get—legacy MD's 292 kbps ATRAC. And the latest version of it, at that (Type R). However, if you're going to use Sonic Stage to transfer, then as sfbp noted, you will get LP2 @ 132 kbps. You may want to try both and see which suits you better. All good!

As you certainly know, the Hi-MD - recording - units will allow you to record in real time in PCM (16bit-44,1kHz) format, that done on a HI-MD formatted MD standard you will get 28 minutes lossless stereo music only. Sonic Stage can upload tracks in WAV format. Note that the MZ-RH1 has a feature that others Hi-MD units don't have, it is possible to upload tracks (SP & MDLP & Hi-MD) from any MD (except pre-recorded albums). In your search in a Hi-MD unit, the first generation (NH1, NH900, NHF800, NH700, NH600D) is the most reliable.

Thank you very much guys.. this was very helpful. I would try to see what is better for me. The most important thing is to be able to listen a higher quality than LP2. I mean.. you can tell is wrong. I don't understand why they went further with LP4, I don't own it yet I can only imagine the low quality, if already the LP2 sounded.. mmm...

sfbp..cand you please tell me more about the formatting? a link or something... Yeah I'm good with 44.1Khz I mean is CD standard.

If you put a disk into the HiMD unit, you can choose how to format it. The easiest way is to set the "disc mode" on the unit itself. However you can still choose in Sonic Stage and initialize it that way as HiMD or MD.

I have at least 1000 hours of LP4 classical music. It's all how it's recorded. Downconversion from a CD won't work at all well. But optical in (especially to a deck such as MDS-JE640 or MDS-JB940) works great for LP4 recording of music.

I am in the process to fill my huge stock of MD (60', 74' mainly & 80') with music. Real time recording take time and as I choose classical music for my first stock, I decided to record in LP2 quality (one disc, two albums). For that SonicStage & my Net-MD deck are my best friends, I just need to convert my Flac & DSD files (all in Hi-Res quality) to WMA lossless 44,1kHz files, an audio format accepted by SonicStage.

It is possible to apply ReplayGain (or not) on tracks before the LP2 transfer to the MD : does this have an influence on the final tracks volume ?
