Sony Ericsson W42S ATRAC phone

I wonder if this phone sold well in Japan. Hopefully it did, and Sony will put out more ATRAC-enabled phones (incl. ATRAC3plus!).

A friend of mine just got a W800i, and it is a nifty phone. I am actually interested in getting a new cell phone for myself, and a Sony Ericsson seems like a good idea to me.

Unfortunately none of the models we have in Canada suits me: I want a phone with ATRAC3plus, CONNECT store compliance, Bluetooth A2DP, photo, video, quad-band/EDGE, and that uses Memory Stick Pro DUO (not the newer mini sized M2 one).

Thanks for the review. I'm actually surprised SE ever released a phone that had ATRAC capabilities, even as limited as this one was. I just sent an email to SE a week or two ago requesting that newer phones include ATRAC playback, since there's a store that supports ATRAC (Connect) and it would give a leg up on the competition. Up until now, the iTunes phones by Motorola weren't all that amazing (slow interface, etc.) SE's design and already pretty good Walkman software on the W-series mobile phones could be that much better.

Maybe some cool stuff will be announced by Sony/Sony Ericsson at CES next week? I can only hope.

Thanks for the review. I'm actually surprised SE ever released a phone that had ATRAC capabilities, even as limited as this one was.

There are currently two phones in the Japanese market that play atrac, this phone and the Music Porter II from NTTDoCoMo. The MPII does play Atrac3+ files, at least up to 256...don't know about 320 and 352. I'm surprised that a product bearing the Walkman label does less than the DoCoMo product that doesn't.

I'd rather Sony Ericsson stick with what they're doing now (no sonicstage, UMS, no Atrac) and improve upon HE-AAC and add gapless support, instead of going back a thousand steps to the stone-age of network walkman (only Atrac3 bitrate supported is just like my NW-E3) + sonicstage. The main draw of SE phones for consumers is the fact that people don't have to use Sonicstage. Sony SE phones probably won't be as popular as they are if people has to use Sonicstage. I wish SE market their phones more openly in the US, and bring in more and newer models, not some leftovers from Asia.

I agree that there is a draw for not requiring SonicStage, though I would love to see a dual-method approach for getting music on the device, similar to how it works with the PSP. You can definitely drag and drop mp3's via USB, but it is also recognized as an ATRAC device in SonicStage. Gives you the best of both worlds. The PSP seems to handle the two together very well. Why not a cell phone too?

1 en sale?

For the internal memory, you will have to use Lissmo for downloading from the net and AU Music Port for loading your cd's.

With AU-MP you can import your tracks in WAV, AAC, WMA, MP3, and something else. It will get transferred to the internal memory in an AU format that has a max kbps of 128 but sounds fine for what it is.

The software will run on an English OS. The only problem with viewing is the options in the pull down menus appear as ? and " but the interface and screens you go to from selecting options appear fine.

Bought the black one today at about 5000 yen, ignore what I said before. Super snazzy, I like it a lot. Haven't actually loaded it with any music though. I find it hard to believe it can play for 30 hours, have you tested that?

And my laptop is English but it is configured as bilingual, so I should be able to display the characters correctly by switching languages. I think.

Yes, the English language version works. Remember, the SS4/4.2 is only for loading music onto the Sony memory stick not the internal memory. Here is the link to SS 4.2, the latest version.

I just tried a test that failed. I bought a card reader this afternoon at Yodobashi and stuck the MSPD card in it. SS won't recognize it and I did a drop and drag of a music file in .OMG format onto the card...phone won't recognize it so to load playable music onto an MSPD card you have to use SS.

  • 3 weeks later...

Mmm another cool phone that only can be used in Japan and not anywhere else in the world.... SE actually have many cool phones for Japanese market but due to Japan's unique network, it certainly cannot be used in any other networks in the world.

If only this phone use GSM then it might have its sister for market outside Japan... sigh...
