Equipment Lifetime

Question

Hey guys (+gals of course), my faithful nw-hd3 died on me recently after about 2-3 years (though i bought it refurbished). So news of this new flash player is really exciting. My friend however, noted that most of his sony gear seemed to die after 2-3 years (md player and micro system). Just wondering if you guys have had the same experience with past sony products. In general does any company make particularly durable DAPs or do they all conveniently fail after 2-3 years so you have to buy a new one?

PS any idea if a new HDD based player will be coming from sony? 8 gigs bit small

cheers,

yex

Actually, all my Walkman collection works fine. Hmm... My first MD player, which I bought in 1996 or 1997 (uses ATRAC, not ATRAC3 era), still works. Not that I use it now... Anyway, I never had my DAP dieing on me from Sony. In fact, I never had anyother DAP from different maker breaking down either (Panasonic, AIWA).

Anyway, it seems like you need DAP with large capacity... but if you want really nice sound quality, try NW-S706 with MDR-EX90 earphones; you won't regret this choice.

My discman (which was the most basic sony model at the time) which I bought in 2001 still works. And of course, my NW-E407 from 2 years ago still works without any issues whatsoever.

When comparing flash and HD players, the HD players will definitely have lower lifetimes, since the hard drive uses a mechanical rotor and the extra power means the batter gets used much more aggressively than a flash player.

I think there is also the question of how the user uses the device... if you bang it around and leave it in the cold or heat it will definitely not last as long as it should, this is true with any device.

Flash is the way to go, I do not have a large music library so I do not see any advantage to the HD players. So far, Sony's flash devices (even the cheap ones) are very good, they respond quickly, look good, and have a long battery life. I don't think Sony will go the HD route unless they make a PMP...

hi,

- I´ve had an MZ-N707 for four years because I sold it. The guy who bought it from me says its till working. So It´s almost 5 years now.

- My 7 year old Discman still works (sony)

- My PSP is a year old now. still working

- My MZ-NH900 is 2,5 years old. still working

- My 10 year old Sony cassette walkman is still going strong.

- My 1.5 year old NW-E307 is also working

- My Sonyericsson S700i is 2 years old and still working

- My SE K700i is 3 to 3.5 years old and still working. (joystick has flaws)

- My other 5 year old Sony Discman is like new.

So I wouldn´t say that Sony equipment doesn´t last long.

It´s well-known that Most of the older MD units last like forever. Just like my MZ-N707.

Just take good care of them, and polish them once in a while.

thanks for all the heads up

i used my nw-hd3 quite a bit, in the last year just listened to the ricky gervais show. often fell asleep listening, as for flash vs hdd i've heard the flash lifetime is limited to the amount of writes you can make to it, whereas hdd is generally about usuage time. any truth to this?
