Hi and welcome to ATRAC Life.

As far as we know there is no possible way to do this and unlikely there ever will be.

treehome - the hardware IS identical, but the software is not. There's been huge speculation on here already about a possible firmware upgrade for the A808 to make it 'behave' like the newer A818. If you do a search, you'll see the final word is 'no upgrade' for the A8xx series. If you want to be free of SS, you'll have to buy the newer model. But you'll be giving up gapless playback, the ability to create on-the-fly bookmarks, ratings information etc - so the newer model is not necessarily a step up from the A808, depending on which features you value.

This is one question that has been asked many times, albeit asked differently. There is no possible way of changing the NW-A806 to NWZ-A816. Cosmetically, they are the same and seem to have the same hardware technology. The firmware on the two devices are similar, but are different enough that it is doubtful that a firmware be made available to give the NW-A800 series the ability to support drag-and-drop.

well here is the thing, someone would have to buy both models, open them up and compare the internals to see if they are exactly the same :P

Better thing would be to get the service manuals of both /lol:D

  • 1 month later...

I need some advice please. Sitting here listening to my 808 and imagining a time when it stops working fills me with such dread that I immediately went to Amazon to order a second one just in case. It's sitting in my basket as I type, and I've put the older 808 in there, not the new 818 (even though it's £20 cheaper!!). Reason I chose the 808 again is because there's no certainty there'll be a firmware update for the 818 to enable it to play gapless.

So my question is: if you were buying a second unit, would you go for the 818 in the hope it would implement gapless at a later stage? I definitely cannot live without gapless, I can live without ratings and on-the-fly playlist if I have to, but not gapless.

I also have 2 speaker cradles so it would be useful to keep one in there without having to take the case off all the time.

My other question is does anyone know roughly how long the life of flash players is? Before the battery dies? I love my 808 a LOT which is why I want another one!! But I want a minimum of 3 years out of them, not a maximum. I don't know if the '500 charges' claim is based on full charges, or whether it counts when you're connected to the PC transferring and stuff. Has anyone got 2 808s???

EDIT The ZA618 is the same price as the A818, but isn't the 618 considered to be the model 'down' fron the 818???

Hi Juli,

I love my A808 too, just like you.

However, I wouldnt buy another one.

Why not?

1) the batteries (li-on) have a limited lifespan (see http://batteryuniversity.com/ for interesting backgroundinformation) so by the time you'll need it lifespan might very well be reduced.

2) memory; I make do with 8Gb, but it's cramped (I use 256 Kbs, if I remember correctly you use something above 300, right?). Newer players will have inevitably have bigger memories, and your A808 will gradually start feeling elderly (hard t0 imagine at the moment, I know, but once I felt the same about the NW-HD1).

3) I'm an optimist; there will be ever better players in the future (again, hard to imagine, yet..). These new players will have all the advantages of SS/ATRAC plus the advantages of using open formats and lots of other advantages (personally I would love to have a player that plays forever on one AA battery, like my old MD-player).

BTW, you won, I finally ordered a Denon 700, after having resisted your luring threat for months. I'll post my impressions at Head-fi of course, I know my duty.

Thanks Dura, your advice made sense, and I've since removed the 808 from my Amazon basket!

I just got panicky thinking it would fail and I'd have nothing to use. But by the time that happens, there'll be a new model out.

And I can still use it in the speaker cradle anyway when the battery starts to die, so all is not lost.

I'm OK for space at the moment as I redid all my 352 bitrates when the battery took a big hit. Now I have all instumental in 256 and vocals in 192 and it all sounds fine, plus I have about 2 GB still free.

So thanks for saving me some money :) . . . and now I'll wait patiently for another Sony next year.

Re: Denons - how much did you pay for them in the end? Amazon.com have them on special offer at $99 at the moment which is an amazing deal. Shame I don't live in America. I also just bought the Denon AH-C551 (also $99) as a slightly cheaper back up for the C700s!

Considering both phones are about the same price as the Sony EX90 at the moment, I'd say it's a great deal, especially as although the EX90s are very very good, the Denons do isolate more and sound a lot better. I think you'll enjoy them a lot, and if not, someone at Head-Fi will snap them up for sure!

Glad to be of help, Juli, I can fully understand the fear of ever losing this small but perfect work of art.

At bluetin in the end I paid €106, - including everything, except the customs if I'm out of luck.

Price for the phones bare was $124,- I think, regratably I found out about Amazon after I placed the order, so if they don't ship this item to Europe it would make me feel better :) Hope this is still readable you, thinking in ponds :D

Oh, one more thing I wanted to mention to you; I was always happy with my Shure E4; it sounded perfect on my NW-HD1, then on my A3000, and I even liked it a lot on the A808 with some EQ. So I never understood you didn't like it.

Two months ago, the cable was worn thorugh, and Shure was so very kind to send me a replacement E4g (the black gameredition) even though the phones were out of warrant.

Great service!

However, my initial happiness faded as I realised the E4g for some reason hardly had any bass, certainly far less then my former E4C and I don't like the sound of the combination anymore.

This might explain why our experiences with the E4/A808 combination differ. (and of course why I finally ordered the Denons).

My main issue with the E4G was the louder I went - the more 'bright' they would sound. For hours after listening, I would have a strange 'ringing' in my ears, which was quite unsettling. I don't listen any louder with the Denons, and I don't suffer from the after 'ring' at all.

I still feel the E4G was the best headphone for acoustic, it was amazing - but the Denons do very very well with acoustic, and they also manage to suit every single piece of music I have, so I find them much more versatile than the E4Gs.

If you are coming from E4, I think you will appreciate the Denon as a fantastic all-rounder and the Sony drives them easily. When it's quiet I can listen between 8/10 and when it's 'normal' listening in the day, I don't need to go past 20 or it would blow my ears away!

I'm really looking forward to the denon; the lack of bass of the E4G annoys me more andmore; I think that might be the reason you raised the volume; to get the right tonal balence; I've lots of sets of speakers and I always raised the volume in my 40m2 living room when I had smaller speakers with less bass; raising the volume seemed to restore the balance (but it did nothing for the peaceful realtion with my neighbours). A speaker or a headphone with enough bass can be enjoyed at lower volumes I think, the denons clearly fit the bill according to the remarkable unity of opinions in your threat across the street.

2. can i transfer videos without using the image converter?how?

You can transfer videos onto A90x by drag and drop. No need the image converter which I never used it anyway.
