Bazirker
My MZ-R70 is sitting in my lap whirring away saying "TOC Edit." Strangely, it has been doing this for the past five minutes. What the hell is going on? I've had this happen before, and sometimes I just unplug the battery (and lose the recording I just did) and other times I let it go and it (sooner or later) finishes. Is it defragmenting the minidisc or something? what makes it go into these random terminal TOC edits?
Sefu
Could be a laser problem. The lens could have dust on it. If it's still not happening after a clean you may have to take it to a service center
Mystyler
I had the problem when my laser was bung - not for 5 minutes though, but it did take much longer than usual. You could try cleaning the laser first - get a cotton bud (q-tip) and some isoproply alcohol and use that to clean the laser. Leave to dry a few minutes, and then try it out. Worked on other's MDs, and worked on my PCDP.
darK (aka Tharaka)
i remember reading in MiniDiscT Forums.. that some guy said clearly "DO NOT DO THAT!" and he was referring to using isopropyl alcohol and cleaning the lens... he tried it on his N1 and it f@#ked it up completely... so i say... try it at ur own risk... Bazirker
The lens is clean, I've already done that, and all three of my players have done that at one point or another. i was just wondering it there was some sort of explanation, and I doubt a dirty laser is the reason, because otherwise it would have trouble doing more than just TOC edits. But thanks anyway.
MDX-400
Perhaps the laser lens is clean but the recording head is dirty??? Just a thought... Might be something else entirely though (like foucus and bias adjust, etc.)
Mystyler
The recording head could also be out of alignment...
Bazirker
But if the recording head is dirty or stuff is out of alignment, then how come it only does a terminal TOC edit once out of every like 100 times I record? I would think both of those problems would persist rather than just coming and going; they wouldn't fix themselves.
Andy
Turn the unit upside down and shake it *gently* if this ever happens again. If it does become regular (like it has for mine), then leave it upside down all the time. Whenever you are recording, get everything set up, put hold on and then put it face down - no more troubles When you shake it, make it very gentle, and stop as soon as there is a new sound (when the laser manages to focus properly... or something along those lines - you'll hear it)
Bazirker
Hmmmm...thanks for the tip Andy. Do you know what causes this? I'm by no means afraid of taking the unit apart and tightening up some screws or something. Recording with the unit face down sounds like it'd be a pain in the ass, and mine is getting progressively worse and I'd like to fix it. me
I'd say it wasn't the isopropyl that killed that N1.. Unless he was careless and sloshed it around too much. It helped my E900 (I think it's got a defective motor now). It's recommended for cleaning CD players lenses (www.repairfaq.org
