well.. here's the only easy way...

as you can see.. the N1 has a lot more features... such as

- USB port in cradle (saves space on player unit)

- Jog Dial

- Personal Disc Memory

- Name Bank

- has a thin Gumstick battery rather than the 707 has a chunky battery that creates a bulge in the player unit

- has a line out

N707's chunky battery hole -

N1's thin bulge (because of jog dial)

can't the headphone jack be used as the line out on the N707? If not how do you upload from the N707 to a computer or stereo etc?

the 707 DOES NOT!! have a line out.. i read it wrong... the N1 is the only one with a Line Out

the headphone jack can (technically) be used as a line out... i'm not a very technical person.. so i'm not sure about the electrical values involved..

but with the N1.. you must have 'Line Out' selected in the options menu's... otherwise there will definitley be something wrong with the sound... (i think)... and technical ppl want to help me out on this one??

If you're still trying to decide between the 2, take a lok at the hacks page.  It's got some stuff on how to get your N707 to do a lot of the things the N1 can do.  Like the timer and a line out, which sounds better than just using the headphone pre sets for line out.

the 707 will still NEVER compare to the N1.. how many ever hacks you put onto it...

Apart from the "ooh ahh" factor what real benefits does the N1 really have that deserves your extra $100?

In the 'rest of the world' the N707 is sold with a normal LCD remote. This means that the N1 doesn't have *any* real new functionality worth $100.

The sound isn't any different, and the line-out is completely bogus. Tests have shown no noticable difference, and the signal is still to weak to be considered a functional line-out anyway.

A friend just bought a $200 iRiver MP3 player, he sez the iRiver blows the N1 out of the water sound quality wise. Remember, it's still the same low-fi 5+5mW amp in that shiny casing. Although the N1's circuitry is a little (little!) different from the N707, the so called "extra's" are already installed in the 707 firmware!!!

SO essentially you pay $100 for a shiny casing.

I'd settle for the N707 anytime. (Actually I'd buy neither of them, but that's another story)

And a better LCD on the unit, and a lighter unit.. smaller unit (yes, the N707 is HUGE. Far fatter than my R37 which I preferred after borrowing an N707). The rest of the worlds N707 comes with a non-backlit remote, too, so that's another plus for the N1.

Even though I consider now, all recorders suck compared to a deck.

go join a MP3 forum..

The line-out of the N1 is true line-out. It gives very good quality when connected to PC or HiFi. If you use headphone out the sound level is very low in comparison, which makes problems with the recording quality.

I heared that the hack for making the 707 to N1 gives no true line-out as there is a electric circut missing, so with 707 set to "line-out" only the volume will be set to max. This is different to N1 line-out.

One way to tell, if the line out is true, it seems to create real distortion when driving headphones. This change happened between the R90 and the R900. The R90 line out seemed to be just max volume and no EQ. The R900 was a different signal that did not tolerate the load of headphones. This is the same as my N10.

Must I assume from the posts that there is no way to input the 707 into the mac? Help!

Yes you can. with the headphone out - volume switched to full blast + no sound settings.

or else you can do the hack which creates a psuedo line out, which does the above for you.

  • 4 months later...

you dont need a N1

ive made a firmwareupdate with my 707 to most N1 features!

like speedcontrol, melodytimer,audio line-out,microphonesensitivity!

if you have the money... definitley go for the N1...

but otherwise.. the N707 isnt a bad recorder either...
