Sefu
Hi all, Is it just me or is minidisc.org org slow, especially the forums? It seems like the server is going overload loading the database and script? I am on a cable connection and when I ping minidisc.org I get the high 200ms and with 19 hops using a trace route. Is anyone else have problems with the slowness? Or is it just my end (i am in Sydney, Aus)?
lewchamp
Sefu I find the same thing here in PEI Canada and I have high speed connect to the net. Sometimes it is so slow I just get disgusted waiting so I move on to something else.
Sefu
Just reading and replying to this post took me a while. If this is a common problem I think it is a good suggestion to upgrade the server. Slow sites always turns off visitors
Christopher
I sent an e-mail to the webmaster. He's on vacation right now but he should get back to this by the beginning of next month. On a personal note, I am interested in newer hardware like you guys. I have no problems donating for such, either. I do wonder though if it's something I've overlooked with the architecture of the forums, or if it's the server itself. You did mention somewhat high ping rates, though.. You guys have to remember that minidisc.org pulls an inane amount of hits, btw.
Sefu
I think its a little bit of both, the server seems to be working very hard to fetch the pages for the visitors and then you have a forum which is heavy on resources as well. Do you know if minidisc.org is hosted on a shared server or dedicated server?
Christopher
After a few optimizations, the speed seems tolerable now. I am pretty sure that this forum runs on a dedicated server, but Eric will answer all questions when he comes back from vacation.
Daijoubu
If I remember correctly, this runs on a dedicated server... Because 11 users online shouldn't generate such slow down, 5secs to generate a page What's the hardware? My board have 10x more online and is 50+ faster (On a Cel1.7 with 1Gb) phpbb vanilla isn't that slow neither, could it be due to some badly written hacks/modifications? My un-modded phpBB2 only use 13 queries on the main page, why does MDCF requier 10 more?! Could it be the members online in the last 12 hours mod? Christopher
If I remember correctly, this runs on a dedicated server... Because 11 users online shouldn't generate such slow down, 5secs to generate a page What's the hardware? It's shared with minidisc.org, not dedicated. Not sure on the exact specs. ..could it be due to some badly written hacks/modifications?Most likely yes. I'm thinking it's the catagories hierarchy mod. My un-modded phpBB2 only use 13 queries on the main page, why does MDCF requier 10 more?! Could it be the members online in the last 12 hours mod? Catagories Hierarchy mod again. The last 12 hours mod is not obtrusive. p.s. I don't think gzip is really on, either. Still trying to figure that one out.
