PLEASE Help!

I've got 2 months before i'm meant to pack up for a year or longer and have waited for the release of the new Sony HI in anticipation of being able to copy all my download (Bit torrent & Kazarr) music over onto a new HI. I've read now that due to licensing it won't convert them to Atrac!!!

What i really need here from as many of you as possible is your advice as i only have 2 months with access to a PC and after that i'm stuck!!!

If i get a IPod and burn my whole cd collection onto it and then copy over all my MP3 (the dodgy downloaded ones i spent the last 3 months collecting) will it copy over OK? Do they have the same licensing issues?

Please help as i don't know which road to go down!!!

Only 2 more months with a PC... freaky tongue.gif

In this case I wouldn't go with an iPod, simply because you're not going to be able to change anything on it at all unless you can get to a PC.

You're not talking about SHN are you? I'm not really clear about your situation here, but the iPod can only play WAV/Apple Lossless/AAC/MP3/AIFF/Audible, and if you're using SHN or something you're going to need to convert it to one of these formats. AFAIK you can convert anything to anything unless it's:

1) a proprietory format (ATRAC[sP])

2) a copyrighted track (iTMS/Connect purchases)

I don't really see why you'll have a problem converting anything to ATRAC. If SonicStage won't accept it, simple... just convert it to WAV. dBpoweramp will do a whole album in a matter of seconds.

well if you are going to be without a pc then i would actualy say Ipod even though i am a hardcore minidisc fan that kind of hates mp3 players because you can play games on the ipod and thats good entertainment if without a pc and if u arent one for any kind of entertainment other than music then go wit hi md and just make a few discs (however many you need to store all yer music) and just use those (the player is also smaller than the ipod)

Hey i'm new here but ive been looking around the fourms for a few days,

anyways, I say definitly go with a hi-md player. If you have enogh $ to get an ipod you could afford one of the higher end hi-md units and you could just record music from anywhere without a comp. With an ipod your stuck with the same music but md lets you record from any stereo or radio you want.

Well thats my opion take it or leave it

If your choice is limited between iPod and HiMD, then I say definitely go with HiMD.

iPod is complete sh!t compared to the other HDD players on the market, like the iRiver iHP series and the Creative Nomad and Muvo.

iRiver is shit in general. Extremely coloured headphone and line-outs. Line-out is far from clean, even without any EQ effects. Sounds like crap with EQ on or off, DSP produces clipping even with gained tracks.

Don't go around calling equipment you don't have much experience with shit.

now im going to make a few assumptions in justifying my thoughs.... as i have just gotten back from 12 months travelling in south america and well i was never too far away from a internet cafe....(5000m in the andies, no running water, F%$##% cold, alt sickness, only four huts and one had a generator a sat dish and 5 pc's.... they are everywhere!!!! popping up faster than rabbits)

but anywhay i digress... one of the big things i liked about the new Hi Md is the ability to use as a drive... do you have a digital camera.... run out of space and you can store on the HiMd!?!?!?!? (assuming internet cafe is arround)

i also found the ability to record fantastic... sitting in the amazon recording night sounds of the forest....

now i dont know if the ipod can do these things and that converting music to mini disk for me was a mission and i only had LP when i left ... but if it we me i would spend the time in the hope that the multy purpose of the Hi Md would pay off....

If you have a lot of mp3s then get the iPod because it's going to take you a lot of time to convert them to atrac, plus it decreases the quality.

I have an iPod and recently got a hi-md. It took me ages to convert my mp3s to atrac.

If you get the iPod make sure you get a good case for it since it scratches like hell!

A lot of the MP3 I got on the computer are the dodgy ones and I haven't had any issues with the licensing. Maybe it's because I don't let my SonicStage program access the internet.

Right now being abroad, I'm loving the Hi-MD, but I've never used an iPod before, so I can't really compare nor give any reason to choose Hi-MD over it.
