oh damn! i'm so happy! blink.gif

after realising the crap of the conversion to ATRAC in sonicstage, i'm back to realtime recordings!

i have a std md (just sp) headunit i my car, and the process of saving an mp3 to a std md using sonic stage, it's way to stupid! i mean it! it's truly heavly stupid! let's see...

- convert mp3 to lp2 (lp2 sucks...)

- then the player reencodes the lp2 audio in SP (great ideia!)

the reencoding is almost kind of realtime... ( i only get 2x the speed, sometimes) and the results are bad, BAD, BAD, BAD. I can't beleive how did an engennier was able to do such thing... i think the guys at sony were drunk or something.

Now! let's talk about the great features of Hi-MD!

- the Hi-SP modes and Hi-LP modes just suck... the sound quality is low. I think Hi-SP is even worst than most of the mp3 at 192 kbps...

- the conversion still needs to be done... so, let's loose some quality again!

- due to the conversion, the transfering is generaly slow... i thoght it would be faster.

- it's expensive... (i payed 290 euro for a nh700... nothing but regular mid-low-range model)

- no 1gb discs available...

- the casing of the nh700 is made of plastic... (my mz-r70 is full magnesium at costed around 250 euro in 2000).

- the DRM system is the worst thing... all those limitations make me nuts.

- the software! OH DAMN! THE SOFTWARE KEEPS CRASHING ALL THE TIME. A few days ago, in the contents of one album, all the tracks were messed up in their order.. i had this nice "track number" column. I clicked over there to sort the tracks -> CRASH! WTF!? A few days ago i donwloaded some mp3, encoded them and transfered to the Hi-MD and all i got was silence... for some reason, that i didn't understud at all!

After getting tired of all this, and after downloading a nice album, with some nice quality, i am doing SP recordings just like old times: REALTIME.

My MZ-R70 could do those recordings as well...

Conclusion: buying this hi-md for me was a lost of money!!! mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif

Indeed. Transcoding is woefully slow and does suck a bit.

The 'native' Hi-SP sound quality is to me (on a PC) more or less identical to a good 256K MP3 rip. No particular differences to speak of and both are very hard to tell from the original CD. My slight objection as outlined before would be the 'HD digital amp'. While pretty agreeable, it just does not excel from a technical point of view... I was surprised that my (Sony) laptop's built-in sound could better the NH1 in technical terms... and I won't mention the iPod :rasp: . However I can see the characteristics of the HD digital amp being 'better' for most people who spend relatively sane amounts on eargear as it has an additional dynamic factor. To this anal retentive however, it's a bit of a disappointment.

And the reports of a less than ideal sound from the HD-amp made me take the NH700 instead, fully knowing, that the analog headphone amp's characteristics take a backseat under a resistive high impedance load.

And it did. The sound via my home system is very clean and neutral. And that is, where it would be used most of the time.

Speaking of the codec, I have yet to find any music, that trips up Atrac3+ at 256k aside from that castanet thingy from the other thread. So far, no complains from me either.
