That's interesting, i didn't know that. If there is a difference with Hi-SP (optical vs USB), I hope it's not noticeable. I honestly can't tell the difference between old SP and Hi-SP. I only do recording with Hi-SP, that's why I brought this up.

What I suggest is doing a full format of the disc. Insert the disc into the unit and set the recording mode to PCM. Don't plug anything in USB or Line in. Hold record and press enter. This will record over the entire surface of the disc and "even out" any errors on it. Since this is realtime recording if your using a 1GB, it will take about 90 min or so. If you're using a standard minidisc it should take less than 30 min. After the recording is done, eject the disc and insert it again. Format the disc to Hi-MD and that will delete the table of contents and you'll have a full formatted blank disc. Many people don't realize that when you format a disc, you are only erasing the table of contents. The recorded material is still on the disc. You can use the full format technique on a disc that has been recorded on over and over again. This will reduce the chance of disc errors. Hope that helps.

I was just wondering whether or not there is a difference in sound quality if you record a CD using the optical input @ 256kbps or if you transfer it through USB @ 256kbps. I've heard that optical realtime recording can be more precise. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I saw these earphones at Best Buy for $10.99 (MDR-E828LP) Seems like a good price but they look like the ones that came with my MZ-RH10. Are they the same earphones? What's the model number of the earphones that are supplied with the MZ-RH10?
-
Thanks for the info. I guess I saw minidisc recording heads like cassette recording heads, where if it was dirty, the sound quality would suffer. But I see that's not the case. If it is just marketing, why would Sony make minidisc cleaners? Since Sony invented the minidisc units, I'm assuming they know what they're talking about when the made the cleaners.
-
Eightyfive, let's say the recording head did get dirty for some reason. Would that affect the sound quality of the recording or would it just cause disk errors? I always thought a clean head would record better sound quality than a dirty one. What do you think?
-
Minidisciskewl, I understand that. But I would like to have a cleaner ready just in case. Although minidisc recording is digital, it uses a magnetic head. Magnetic heads do need to be cleaned, especially after many recordings.

Danny, I followed the link that you provided earlier and I don't think that store ships to the U.S. I'm in California and when i tried to register it asked for a Canadian address. I would really like one of those cleaning kits and it's a good price. I don't know if any U.S. stores carry them.
-
Is it a lens cleaner or head cleaner? The cleaner that I have is a head and lense cleaner and it was for my old MD player. I can use it to clean the lens on my RH10 but I can't clean the head because the cleaning disk is not Hi-MD format, and the disk does not allow itself to be formatted to Hi-MD. So what head cleaner will work with all Hi-MD units?
-
Danny, thanks for the info but it doesn't specify whether it's for Hi-MD. Not all cleaners that were made for MD will work on Hi-MD.
-
I was wondering if Sony makes a head and lens cleaner for the Hi-MD units. I tried using my old cleaner but my RH10 is unable to format it to Hi-MD, therefore it can't record on it which is what's needed to clean the head. I've heard it's necessary to clean the head and lens after a full 1GB recording. Any suggestions? Thanks.

How about these:Sony Fontopia Lightweight Ear-Bud Headphones with 9mm Drivers Model: MDR-EX51LP I saw them at the Best Buy website. Does anyone know if these are good earphones? They're about $35.

I've been using my RH10 with the factory earphones but I've heard that sony makes better earphones available. Anyone have any suggestions on which earphones to get at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc? I want something with more bass response without drowning out the mids and highs. Thanks.

I've figured out how to do sync recording with digital recording but I haven't figured out how to do it with analog recording. The manual doesn't explain it. My old MD player had sync recording for digital and analog. I hate to think the my new MD player doesn't have the basic features of the old ones. Thanks.
-
Yeah, that's it. I haven't used them at all. What kind of interference are they suppose to reduce or block? I only do optical/digital recording, so I don't think I need to use them. But I will be buying a new computer soon, and then I'll be downloading music with the USB cable. Do I need to use it then?
-
When I bought my MZRH10, it came with these 2 clips or clamps that go around the USB cable wire. What are they for? Do I need to put them on? I also noticed that my charger cable also has a clamp on it. I've never seen this before. Thanks.

Well, here's the thing. I just recorded (not downloaded) an ABBA album onto a minidisc and I want to add titles to the tracks. I also want to add the artist name and the name of the album. Everytime I add the artist and album name, it only gets attached to the first track. All the other tracks have no name. How do I get my MZ-RH10 to realize that when I add artist and album names, it applies to all the tracks on the disc? I read the manual, it's not very helpfull. Thanks

I've only had mine for a few days and I do a lot of recording using the optical out on my DVD player. I've heard that downloading and recording will not yield the same sound quality. If you download a song to a disc @ 256kbps (Hi-SP) and record a song at 256kbps (Hi-SP), the recorded song would have better sound quality. Something about the high speed transfer rates in downloading may affect sound quality. I'm not sure, so if I'm wrong, please correct me.

Where exactly did you purchase these headphones: Sony MDR-EX71SL, Koss porta pros2 ? I have the U.S. version of the RH10.
-
I figured the earphones that came with the unit were not made for bass response. I was considering buying some better headphones but I don't want to spend too much, maybe around $20 - $30. Got any suggestions?
-
Okay, I haven't decided if I'm going to keep it or not. Maybe you guys can help me decide. Here are my pros and cons for the unit: Pros: Great sound quality after recording, small and lightweight, easy to use. Cons: Bass response not strong enough, Not loud enough (cassette players have more volume), labels on case not bold enough (I'm afraid the oil in fingertips will remove the labels over time).

The only type of recording I would do is real time recording using the optical out on my DVD player. I would probably use Hi-SP only if it's as good as old SP or better. I know PCM is CD quality, but play time is too short.

Well, I currently own a regular Minidisc recorder but I've been wanting to upgrade to Hi-MD. Unfortunately, I haven't found a single store that carries them. This leads me to believe that they are less popular than MP3 players. But that's why I want a Hi-MD unit, because they are not popular and they stand out from the rest. I would only buy one if Sony promises to promote the Hi-MD units and if they are willing to build Hi-MD players for the car. I don't just want to use the the Hi-MD as portable audio, I want to play them in my car without using a car adapter since I don't have a cassette player. So the question is, is Hi-MD worth it? Will it be around for a while? Thanks.

Well, I changed the settings on the DVD player to: A. 1.) Digital Output (on) 2.) Dolby Digital (D-PCM) 3.) DTS (off) 4.) Sampling/Bitstream (48khz 16-bit) I recorded one song and then changed the settings back to: B. 1.) Digital Output (on) 2.) Dolby Digital (D-PCM) 3.) DTS (on) 4.) Sampling/Bitstream (96khz 24-bit) ..and I recorded the same song and when I played it back, the second settings (B.) gave better sound quality than the first (A). Maybe I convinced myself they sound better, but there was no distortion or errors on the minidisc, so I'm keeping these settings. Those of you with DVD players, try recording from it with these settings and see if you get better sound quality.
