  1. Thank you Richy - you have saved me hours and hours of changing things manually. What a relief as my heart always sinks when I see a million different 'composers' for the same album. Thank you again!
  2. Every time I import a CD in SS (and get CD info), I'm not able to change the 'composer' until it's in the library. I can change title and genre etc but not composer. So I end up with perhaps 5 or 6 different 'composers' within one album and then I have to manually change each one to the artist (as that's all I want). If I don't change them, I get the composer info on my walkman which I don't want. Any ideas? And has anyone has had any probs with album art? I know how to do it, it's just that sometimes the album art doesn't transfer to the player, even after deleting the album and re-importing and starting over. I've already checked under individual track properties that the album art is there, and it's fine 90% of the time - but sometimes the album art just won't transfer and I wondered if this is an SS quirk/foible
  3. Thank you Lulu, that's really kind of you to supply the info! Some lovely helpful people on this site
  4. Well I set AVLS (thanks for the reminder!) which is loud enough with the headphones. I think I damaged my ears, the volume went to max so fast it took my brain a second to register what was happening. I thought I must have pressed it myself so I wasn't expecting it the second time, it was a killer!! I waited for a reply about the 'docking volume' thing so didn't unpack the case yet. I'll get a replacement. Thanks for the help
  5. Do you mean backing up the tracks from the Walkman so that you can transfer them back to the Walkman after you've initialised? If that's what you mean, I don't think you can. As you say, SS only backs up whats in the library. Have you got the tracks on the computer itself somewhere else other than SS, or just on the Walkman?
  6. I didn't see those instructions, I just glanced at the diagram. Can you explain says to slide the walkman "docking the VOLUME buttons." I feel really dim at the moment due to my 'burst' eardrums and can't make sense of the simplest of things. Are you saying there's a special way to slot the front cover on? I just clicked it into place from bottom to top, but whatever way I placed it, it just pushed against the volume all the time. Sorry to be so thick, but what do you mean 'docking the volume buttons'? There's just one button, the top part is to increase, and the lower part to decrease the volume. How do I 'dock' it?? Yes, AVLS is a brilliant idea, wasn't sure if the 808 had it as haven't explored that far yet, and I don't need it above 15 anyway. Thanks for your help. I've already packed the case to send back, but if I can understand what you meant about the instructions (which are now packed!) I might take it out again and try it
  7. Haaha - finally figured out what it was. When the cover is put on, the volume is activated immediately going straight to max. The left hand side of the cover is 'pushing' the player over to the right and pressing on it! Must be the tiniest measurement discrepancy causing it. My ears are really really thumping!
  8. Thanks for the replies. I guess it must only be my case. Narkeuk, I'll try looking at the inside of the case, but because it's hard plastic, it's difficult to get a good look. It's a really nice case, just a bit 'dangerous' for my ears at the moment. Thanks
  9. I posted this in the wrong place so re-posting here. Sorry. Is anyone else using the CKH.NWA800 clear hard case with the 808? I just got mine, looks great, fits great. Unfortunately I've just blown my ears out. . . twice - as when I increase the volume, the slider goes straight to 30 without stopping! Real shock to my ears and I can't even hear what I'm writing I've taken the front cover off and the volume works fine, one notch at a time - but as soon as I put the front cover on, and before I've even clicked it into place - the volume just goes straight to max. It doesn't happen when I lower the volume, only when I increase it. There must be part of the cover that's pressing on the control, but as it's plastic I can't 'stretch' it. Is anyone else having this problem or is it just my case?
  10. Did you mean the E500??
  11. ppau, definitely interested to hear your views. I've got the E500's up for sale now and just got the UE super.fi 5 pro (which I also had with the 706 and sent back as was too 'warm' and 'thick') And Ceres, you were right, the UEs with 808 are a good combo. The extra warmth the phones provide make it sound a lot closer to the 706, and that's with EQ off. The volume differences between the 500s and the UEs is strange as I only need to set the volume around 12 for the UEs and around 14/15 with the 500s - the only difference between the phones that I can see is the UEs have 21ohms impedance, and the 500s have 36ohms impedance. Seems the Sony is more efficient at driving phones with a lower impedance - I found this to be true with the 706 as well. Also, the UEs still sound really good at lower volumes, whereas the 500s need to be turned up for them to sound good, except that too much started to distort (for me). Of the two, I prefer the clarity of the 500s with the 808, but prefer the warmth of the UEs. The UEs are definitely more bassy without being too bassy. I think it's difficult to get something absolutely 'perfect', and having tried so many different headphones, I think the UEs are a good all-round match for the 808 and I think the 808 now sounds closer to the 706. Waiting for your views on the 808 + 500s!!!
  12. Akai, I think gapless is only possible when you import the CD via Atrac. When I converted from wma to atrac, I got gaps - but when I imported the CD in atrac, I got gapless - gapless that it with the tiniest gap!
  13. Shinji - you did a really good job of explaining how to use the shuttle switch! Why doesn't it just say: "Pull shuttle switch out" ?
  14. So it's grown on you. . . interesting. Maybe it's just about giving it time to acclimatise to the different sound. Well, I definitely was not impressed with the E500s on it, even though I know the 500 is an excellent headphone. And the supplied headphones are out because of the lack of isolation. So it's one more try with the super.fi and then I'll make a decision whether to sell the 808. I wish I wasn't so hung up on having to have the 'right' sound, but I've always nit-picked about SQ since I was 10! Fingers crossed that I can salvage something from the 808! Thanks for the input
  15. I was using the Shure E4c which I'm selling as well. They are fantastic for acoustic and classical, but I need something for all styles. I'm re-buying the super.fi's and can only hope they'll be OK. I'll report back if there's any joy!
  16. ppau - re: HD5 compared with 706, I had the HD5 and the sound is 'related' (ie., fuller than the 808) but that's all. I bought (and sold) the HD5 within a week! It does have very good sound and still knocks spots off anything 'non Sony' in my opinion, but it's definitely not in the same league as the 706. The volume limiter had been removed but I still had to set the volume at around 90% which leaves little in reserve. Listening to them side by side revealed huge differences, but if you'd never heard a 706 before, the sound is pretty impressive. Unfortunately, I need something that can live upl to the 706, and the HD5 didn't do it for me. This is based purely on sound quality. It's very good - but the 706 is excellent. The other slightly annoying thing about the HD5 was there was no normaliser. I kept having to adjust the volume between songs. The only way I can try and describe it more accurately is to say that the 706 is like strong black coffee - the HD5 is milky coffee - and the 808 is lemon juice! I'd like to know if anyone else has tried both the HD5 and 706 recently and can comment? I'm cutting my losses with the E500 and selling them on. Last try will be going back to the super.fi 5 pro which I felt were way too warm and bassy with the 706, but having heard the E500's with the 808, I think they'll be better suited. I'd like to know what you think of the 500s, you might be OK with them, but I think my expectations were too high and I'd hoped to replicate the 706 sound. But I couldn't. Let me know what you think about your 500s when they come
  17. You might also need to tick the compilation box (under properties) to push the songs together under the same album. Your screenshot looked like your albums didn't have matching names - crucial if you want to get them in the same folder. As said before, make sure the titles match exactly. SS is really fussy
  18. Hmmm, been using the 500s for about 4 hours and although the 808 definitely does sound warmer and fuller with them (compared to the cold E4s I was using) - I can't help but compare it unfavourably with my sold-last-week 706. The richness of the 706 just cannot be replicated for me despite trying various eq settings. To me it's just a colder player full stop. With the E500s they distort slightly at louder volumes, a problem I did not have with the 706. I think this just confirms that the 706 was a better-sounding player for me and the only player whose sound I really enjoyed. With the 808 I kind of feel disappointed when I listen. I think I tried to convince myself at the beginning when I first had the 808 that the EQ helped, and it does for certain styles of music sometimes - but mostly I keep fiddling with the EQ to get a better sound, and not succeeding. I think the E500s make it sound better, more bass and wider soundstage, and I've cut the volume from 17 to 11, but it's the 'quality' and 'tone' I can't get. The E500 with the 706 was too 'warm' but the sound quality was still excellent - not so with the 808 in my opinion. I am going to try and adapt to the sound but not sure if that's possible now. Has anyone else been disappointed by the 808 and then grown to like it??
  19. If you mean the hard silicon case - it's available here in the UK from Amazon. It's not cheap though. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-CKHNWS700-CE7...r/dp/B000KOYUXO Why don't you ask someone here in the UK (like me for example) to buy it and then post it? It would be even more expensive when you add International Signed For costs though. so maybe wouldn't be worth it. I sold my 706 last week to a girl in Australia and gave her the case for free. She loves it!
  20. Depeschie, 706 DOES support usb 2.0. Amazon is wrong. I read that on a review site, but it wasn't Amazon. Yes, it does support USB 2.0
  21. Is the Prodigy album a compilation you made, or a complete album? If it's a compilation, you need to check each track under 'properties' while it's still in the SS library and look for any tiny differences, ie., Prodigy - Prodidgy, anything spelt slightly differently will immediately 'split' the album. There's tons of stuff on here about SS and why it does what it does, so just keep asking, you're bound to find the answers somewhere.
  22. Pander, there's no volume limit on UK models. My one is plenty loud at 17/30 so it's definitely not capped.
  23. Well, the E500's are 'out for delivery' now so should be here tomorrow. Having been slightly disappointed with the 808 sq compared with the 706, it will be interesting to see if the headphones will help the 808 sound more like the 706 - ie., smoother and not so brittle! I'll try various styles of music and post back my comments for anyone who is experiencing the same 'sharpness'. If the 808 was just a little smoother, it would be perfect for my ears - so I hope the phones are going to improve my listening experience!
  24. I think you can only get access to your original library if you use the sonicstage backup tool. I don't think there's another way to do it. Once the computer's been replaced/wiped etc, it deletes the original SonicStage library ID - and I think the backup tool backs up the ID. The problem seems to be that your library doesn't 'recognise' your computer. Someone else might know a way round it?

    Sony NWS706F

As far as I know, yes. All my stuff is Atrac 256kbps and it sounds very good - whether that's because Atrac was designed for use with Sony players, I don't know - but it sounds fine. I converted wma vbr from about 400 kbps to Atrac 256 and can't hear any difference. If you want great sound, it doesn't come much better than the 706
