    Sony NWS706F

I had a 706 too and noticed it wasn't a really 'snug' fitting. My first one had faulty headphones so I was sent a replacement unit - and it was the same! It didn't fall out or anything, it just didn't feel extra tight. I think that's how they're made, but no doubt someone else will shed some light on it
  2. He might have already done that, we don't know. I just asked him if he'd imported the CD first because it was the only thing I could think of. . . and because I've made that mistake myself! It's possible he's getting that error message for a different reason
  3. RESOLVED! It was a faulty case and I now have my replacement. Must say I prefer it with the case on as it bulks up the player and stops it feeling like a limp 'After Eight' in my hand!
  4. Silly question, but are you trying to transfer the album directly to the player before you've imported it into the library? I mean, you've put the CD in and are playing it in SS as you say when you select the songs they play perfectly - just wondered if you'd forgotten to actually import the CD before trying to transfer?
  5. Thanks - I've got some spare EX buds plus I've also got the new Shure black foam tips, so won't need to the use the regualr tips if they're that bad!
  6. Yes, I completely agree with you. I think the Sony sound is light years ahead of the ipod. I listened to some stuff on my friends ipod and I was shocked at how flat and lifeless the tone was. I would choose never to listen to music again if my only option was to hear it on the ipod. However, she loves her ipod because SQ is not her priority. Ease of use, features, the accessories, "it's pretty" are what attarcts her. All her stuff is in 128kbps and she couldn't be happier. I would rather sacrifice my sanity and struggle on with the 'joy' that is SonicStage, just because the sound is so rewarding and enjoyable. It's all about different needs for different people, and I would imagine that people who put SQ above everything else are in the minority. I say this based on the amount of ipod users, and the fact I asked 20 people I worked with if SQ or ease of use was the most important factor. Only 4 people said SQ a priority, the rest said 'easy software' 'quick transfers' anything that would save time. It's a shame because I've had 3 Sony players and have never been able to fault the sound of any of them compared with any other brand, plus they pack quite a lot of power into their tiny amps, I only ever get to half volume for casual listening - on the ipod and creative vision m, I need almost maximum to achieve the same loudness, and the quality isn't even comparable. Sony just gets it right with the sound.
  7. This is the view of the library for this album. I don't have any auto-transfer settings activated and I edited the track numbers once the CDs were imported through SS - as obviously they were numbered for 2 discs. So I changed the track numbers before transfer. Yes, I'll delete the discs from the player and start again even though it's not an issue as the albums play concurrently anyway - it's just I'd like to know how to do it next time. Also, when you insert a screenshot, is it a word.doc like mine? Can't figure out why the text isn't coming out even after clicking on the green icon
  8. Thanks Richy, here it is OH! It didn't come out, will try again
  9. Not sure if you mean they're not deleting once you connect the player? I simply add to the trash bin from the player, and then when I connect the player it 'updates' information and all the songs in the trash bin are gone. When you say they're not 'highlighted', are you thinking they'll be highlighted as they delete? As far as I know, they just disappear once the information's been updated
  10. How did you insert the screenshot? I've taken one which might help you understand where I've gone wrong!
  11. richy, I checked the track numbers before transferring. So in the library the tracks are in one album and numbered sequentially, 1-16, but once transferred to the player, they are split into 2 albums, 1-8 disc 1, and 1-8 disc 2. When I click on individual track properties in the player layout - there is no option to change track numbers. I took a screenshot but don't know how to include it in this message
  12. OK - unlucky number 13 double disc. So I imported 'The Wall' discs 1 and 2. I made sure they were both named the same before I imported because I wanted them in one album. But it transferred as 2 discs on the player - not a huge problem as they'll just follow on from each other, but I don't understand why they didn't transfer as one album. In the library, all the tracks are in one album (when I imported and named both discs the same, I got the option to 'add' tracks to the album with the same name ''The Wall',) so I confirmed that and they all went in one album in the library. But they're split on the player. Any ideas why? I know if there are conflicting details, ie., 'THE WALL' and 'tHe waLL' they'll get split, but all the details are the same.
  13. richy, thank you for CD importing tips Thank you so much for that advice, I imported 12 CDs tonight and it was an absolute breeze compared to before. I can't believe the long complicated route I'd been taking. You have saved me so much time that I have begun to look upon SS more kindly, and that is a miracle. Thank you
  14. PPAU - check this link to someone who compared the E500 with the Westone 3 http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.p...147#post3071147 Very brief, but you might find it useful to read before you fork out for the Westone 3 in haste!
  15. I sold them on Amazon.co.uk as 'used' but with unused earpieces as I was using my own ones that Shure sent me a few months ago for the E4Gs. They were sold within hours. Of course I'll post back comments about the UM2's. More 'research' seems to place them somewhere between the super.fi 5 pros and the E500/530 so I'm hopeful I'll like them.
  16. Come to think of it, maybe I misunderstood you too. When you click on the individual track properties under the album itself in SS, is the album art showing under each track - not just the album cover in the library, but every single track? I noticed that when I drag and drop album art across, although it shows album art on the album cover in SS, when I click properties, the album art's missing - even though I can see it in the library! So I have to check that first the album art is really 'there' by right-clicking and checking properties for the album while it's in library view (even though I can see it's there!) and I've double and triple-checked each and every track in SS before transferring, and still it's missing! Quite frustrating as it doesn't happen all the time, so there seems to be no reason for it. Why Sony, why??
  17. I certainly will. If they sound clearer than the super.fi's and less 'cold' than the E500, I'll be happy. They're also a lot cheaper than the 500s and only a little more than the super.fi's (with the July4 discount). I sold the 500s for exactly what I paid for them, so didn't lose anything. Would hope to get UM2's by Saturday if the postmen are back at work. and will post once I've had a few hours with them. Is your only complaint about the E530 that's it's 'cold'? I had an issue with the quality at higher volumes with them on the 808, (too bright) I think it's something to do with the 36ohms impedance - the 808 seems to function better (for me) with lower impedance phones. The UM2s are 27ohms so might be better match.
  18. I have um2's coming next week, just sold the super.fi's today. If I can't get on with um2's I'm giving up as this Goldilocks is fed up looking for just the right headphone! The super.fi's do make the 808 sound warmer, (and God knows, the 808 needs it!!) - but it still doesn't make the 808 sound like a 706. The 706 was warm without being 'thick' and the vocals were lovely and clear - whereas with the super.fi's the vocals sound like a thick layer of honey has been added. They sound almost foggy. After listening to the E4/E500 I really miss the clarity of the vocals and I didn't find EQ helped. I was going to wait for the Westone 3, but the release date is still unknown, and I'm sure I'll nit-pick about those too. It's hard to choose a headphone based on other people's reviews, because although the Westone 3 is hailed as the 'God' of new headphones, so were the E4s and the E500s when they were released. I do like the Shure sound for vocals and acoustic, it's so clear and detailed - and I found the super.fi's altered the balance too much for my liking. I have too say they were great for rock, and sounded really good at lower volumes. E500s and E4G (for me) needed to be set much louder to bring out the good bits, but I need an all-rounder due to the different styles of music I listen to. I ordered the UM2s for $279 (including postage to the UK) from Earphone Solutions which was about $50 more than the super.fi's and $100 less than the E500s. They've got a 15% sale on all headphones from 26th June to July 4th, which was very fortunate for me, as I 'saved' $44 by ordering yesterday and not the day before! I'm glad you like the E530s - it is a good headphone, but the 808 is so cold (to those of us who preferred the 706 sound) that it deperately needs a warm headphone - one that can closely match the clarity of the E4/E500, and smooth out the harshness of the 808. It sounds like you're happy with the clarity but not with the 'coldness'. Well, my UM2's should be here in a few days - Royal Mail strike allowing! - and I will post my comments if you're interested, as we both seem to be in agreement about the coldness of the 808. Much as I loved the 706 (which I haven't got anymore), I have to admit it's nice to see a screen as vivid as the 808 after squinting at the 706!
  19. And the 3-minute charge which is absent on the 808! Also depends if you like full sound or sharper sound From what I've read it is not a case of 'most' people preferring the SQ of the 808 - there are plenty of people who prefer the richness of the 706. As I said before, it all depends on your sound preferences, but I would have to disagree that the 706 is less detailed - in my opinion it is more detailed than the 808 and nicer to listen to. 808 is still very good - but 706 is easier on the ears!
  20. It's a 'cold' headphone when paired with the 808 but I found it much warmer with the 706 because the 706 tone is warmer in the first place. I'm still using the super.fi's which are much warmer than the E500 but slightly too uncomfortable to wear for long periods. Can you get to try the 500s with the 706 before you go and buy another one?
  21. A lot of people agree the sound signatures are very different - that's not in dispute, one is full and rich, the other sharper/brighter. I'd say the difference in sound is very significant. It's not about which one is 'better', as that's a personal preference - but they are definitely not similar in sound. The EQ settings might be the same, but the overall tonal sound of each player is very different
  22. I still maintain (for me) that the 706 has better sound quality and more clarity than the 808. The 808 is sharp sounding, but that doesn't mean it is more detailed than the 706 - it's just sharper. I regrettably sold my 706, but before I sold it, I tested a few tracks that I know very well on each unit, and the 706 produced more detail than the 808. Certain vocals that were clearly audible on the 706 were quiet and muffled on the 808. At first I perceived the extra sharpness of the 808 as providing extra detail, unitl I compared them side by side. I'm adapting to the 808 as I have no choice, but I miss the clarity and fullness of the 706. The 808 is a good player, no doubt about it, it's very different sounding to the 706 - but it depends on the sound you like to hear. I also found that the 706 EQ was much more efficient than the 808. I could tweak the 706 and get perfect sound, but I can't quite tweak the EQ on the 808 to my satisfaction, I keep having to change it for different styles of music, whereas the 706 I could leave pretty well alone once I'd 'tweaked'. Interesting to hear the different views on the 808 SQ
  23. Thanks Richy, I've copied and pasted your advice into a word doc so I can refer to it tomorrow. Looking forward to saving hours of my life not manually editing every individual composer
  24. It was a faulty case. Must be a million-to-one shot I ended up with it! There was a minute discrepancy in the fitting on the left-hand side which once placed - forced the walkman to the right and set off the volume. Funnily enough, the online store I bought it from said they'd replace it if I packaged it exactly as new - after a bit of delving in the bin I found the card insert so packed it 'as new' and then wrote on the back 'FAULTY' just in case he planned on selling it to someone else. . . and if it comes back to me again. . . well Should have replacement next week, it's a nice case, nicer than it looked on screen Thanks again
