  1. hmm...... that's strange.. i thought hong kong would have that type a stuff ages back..any who you're welcome
  2. you know although i was thinking the same thing i still had to beat my curiosity by asking
  3. no problem and if there's anything extra that you might not understand or need help with you can holla
  4. hmm....you all misunderstood the question.. the unit claims it have both the "G-Sensor Shock" and "G(ravity) Protectiong" i believe the G Sensor stands for that feature where the unit automatically sense it's being droped and remove the magnetic head from the disc so as to reduce damage and as to your method of testing.. i was just suggesting that you could have it play with your head phones on and see for instance if the music actually stops or what ever if you droped it from one hand to the next
  5. ok first of all you should have a very small philips screw driver (i don't remember the exact size but by the size of the screw head you can tell),a saudering gun, a black piece of cloth to work on (the screws are shiny if lost you'll easily see them on the cloth), a cool environment (chances are your hands are gonna sweat), and a good photographic memory  ok now bear in mind i don't actually have a N710 but the structure of the units from 2000 up are either exact or very very much the same anywho... now to disassemble the unit: 1. unfasten all the screws around the back of the unit (i.e not the screws around the lid with the display and controls etc) 2. with the lid still shut hold the unit in your hand with the data port, optical input, mic input and headphones/remote input facing you with your left hand holding only the lid and your right hand holding only the back .. now gently try pulling your fingers apart(not your thumbs) as to open the unit from the opposite end facing away from you NOTE* do not be aggressive and take it all apart because there's a data cable connecting the controls to the main board (if that's broken you're in deep shit) now you should have the frame seperated from the back cover right? 3. you can now unfasten the screws from around the lid (at this point the lid is suppose to be ejected so you you'll see the skeleton of the unit which is all silver blah blah..) gently pivot the lid from the top (holding the unit with your right hand on the frame and your left hand holding the lid open the lid like you'd open a book (i.e. spreading the top not the bottom) now you should have the lid apart from the silver frame 4 you'll see a date cable linking the controls in the lid to the main board at the base of that cable where it's connected to the board there's a socket which you can just unlock by using your finger nail and pulling the brown* latch downwards releasing the cable.. 5. now to ensure that it's the date cable linking the magnetic head to the unit that's broken you could hold down on hard metal you'll c with 2 screws in it NOTE* do not apply pressure to the flimsy strip of metal that the date cable runs on, now you shift this left and right by applying a lil pressure and you'll feel this click effect as the mechanism run on the threading of the uhh( i forgot what you call it newho) shift the entire mechanism to your right till it stops (you'll notice the entire lens system move along with the head etc) now pay close attention to the cable..it's supposed to be smooth all i.e if you notice a sharp bend in it then it's just damaged if you see it broke then it's broken. 6 replacing it, you gotta unscrew the flimsy strip of metal fastened by 2 screws and some glue and remove it... by now you should have have that piece of metal in your hand while the rest of the cable remain saudered to the board , now you could either head the sauder or tear the cable from the board (by tearing it you're left with the solid sauder so when replacing it you could just heat the sauder and connect the ends of the cable... uhh now i might have missed some details  but nothing major i'm sure.. now to replace that whole magnetic head thingy ..when you buy and old md unit and you're taking it out you should not tear the cable from the board but rather heat the sauder so it just slips out and then reconnect it to the old board and screw it back.. but this time you gotta make sure it's flush with the lens or else you'll have recording errors when recording.. uhh as for the units to use i'd suggest any unit manufactured by sony since 2001 i.e from MZR 700 just to be on the safe side now if all this is done and there's nothing wrong with your cable or magnetic head then it's an optical pick up problem and i'll have to tell you how that goes.. remember the procedures follow them step by step and remember... you're doing this at your very own risk  i will not accept any responsibility for your actions.. with all that said... take care
  6. conclusion: i suggest you go with the md but based on how aggressive you're gonna be with it because look at me for instance i skate and i crash with my md units many times and there's times when i'd crash and the disc and battery fly all over the place... you could imagine how that would impact a hdd player right? i've never had a hdd based mp3 player but i'm gonna try it out this year with the 4gen ipod i'll do my best to guard it but if it breaks then i know from experience..... remember not matter what you do buy... get atleast 2 years warranty with it PLEASE!!!
  7. ppk3000 wrote.. Scratching my head............... :whatever: uhh advice you should get more aquanted with the models do your homework ok check http://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-R70.html any how... Sonyuser_r70 your problem with the pc link is due to driver issues i'd believe, now i have a r70 but mine didn't come with the pc link..(scratching my head) so i'm not sure which model yours came with but i know sony shipped them with to models could you identify the model that came with yours?, or you can do your recordings via analog with the male sterio mini plug cables which looks like ( http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...84771&CatId=453 ) and altho the recordings might sound good there are some variables ...mainly your sound card (being able to produce a clean static free signal etc..) and other noises you might encounter like having your mic on while recording or having system sounds enabled and things of that sort.....
  8. hmm....that's right not software but hardware... hey according to your symptoms it's the magnetic head or the other components in connection to it that got issues... now it's pretty easy to replace  if you could get the part BUT...that's a challenge what i'd suggest is get a cheap old unit from Ebay and do some operations  if you're interested in experimenting i'll be glad to look for a post i did on this some time ago
  9. hmm.... go with the MD trust me ...that's the place your money should go..uhh...one more thing... altho mds are durable...they're subject to a special type of wear and tear uhh say after 1 year everything seems to go wrong  but no matter what you do, buy WARRANTY.. have fun
  10. hey thanks for the advice i'm now downloading the 0.9.3  but you know i came here and you know how your own karma options would just b in text no plus or minus buttons..well when i came here first i found all the other users options appeared that way...but having typed a reply to address that earlier i noticed they were enabled again..then i thought it's probably because i wasn't signed in yet.. it's only logical  chances are Skyther(x) might have the most negative responses etc from his statements altho they seem indepth and very technical he got a way of handling "opinions"
  11. hmm...... well just letting you know that sometimes i experience some problems using Firefox 0.8 note* sometimes i don't see the plus and minus signs for the Karmas, just a bunch of text and you mention rewards..uhh thus far you seem to be the only person with 2+ and you're always here obviously you'll get more than the most users.. are you eligable to win any thing.. bearing in mind again you post the most in all topics etc...
  12. Leland i'm still awaiting your opinion on their claims with the battery life and if possible the G-Sensor Shock Protection
  13. ok so now i'm left to ask if u just want the recording capability or very good digital voice recordings cuz i'm sure u could settle for the dell dj ipod's biggest contender right? u can record with that unit
  14. skyther(x) which sounds better the ipod mini or the HI MD and i'm asking for a comparison of same or similar bitrates.
  15. Michael Walker wrote: i'm glad you made that point but i'm really thinking that sony will come up with a way to have the same recording capabilities of the MD integrated to the HDD it's not impossible but it just haven't been done yet and i do believe that the majority of md users who use minidisc do so for listening to music rather than doing recordings (opinion)* and you mention fulling up a disc rather easily hmm...well from my experience and others around me uhh...since the advent of MDLP the rate of purchasing blanks have decreased considerably compared to back when it was just 1.1 recording at the disc's rated time and i'm assuming that that rate might even decrease more for for those who plan on using minidisc for listening to music (mainly) and i know of some who would rather have their entire collection on hand rather than have many different lil discs to chose from (minidisc users)

    More Delays

yeah that could be true and as we all know the sony that we used to know is circling down the drain.. so you see now they wanna come out with HDD based media players why now huh... right now i'm starting to think they're full of it and other companies are taking full advantage of their delays.. especially as ipod minis gonna be running all over the place
  17. or in stead of hunting down for hi res hi deff pics u could always check http://minidisc.org/himd_table.html and keep checking that page because i'm sure what ever hi res pic might be uploaded here will find it's way there but that's if you're not already familar with that page

    More Delays

ok i found out what the wave software is and thinking of it that might be part of the cause seeing that none of the units with mic inputs are available yet
  19. Skyther(x) haha  ne who... that's not such a good statement to make on a forum weren't you the one that told me that these things are being read all over the world? ne who.... i'm wondering now if the place of manufacturing have something to do with the build of the unit now you put it in prospective seeing that from my 4 years of using minidisc most haven't lasted me more than 9 months without a fault ( friends says that i'm the reason for the faults but that's debatable) now i'm concerned about this because my black N707 and many others that i've seen came with a crack around the screw hole at the bottom right (with the unit facing you) and that being the case that's the first screw that went missing off my unit then the screws at the side going up where the hold switch is as well as the one at the bottom left those in tact are those at the top and on the left.. now i'm blaming the loss of screws to some uhh... manufacturing faults ( miss calculations of the components sizes etc) .. for instance if u take out the screw of most devices e.g a cell phone.. you wouldn't find the two different parts moving apart from each other unless there's a spring causing some resistance as in the case of taking off the chip board at the back of the display of the N707 where there's a spring under the main control button ( i hope u can picture what i'm talking about thus far) now in the areas that i meantioned earlier where the screws are missing .. the screw holes are nothing close to flush but rather out of place like there's something forcing them apart either above or below and this is an observation i made since a month after purchasing the unit... maybe i should try purchasing a unit made in a different location have you? and if so how could i go about doing that
  20. well now sony seem to want to compete amongst themselves or something like it. now what can we expect to happen to minidisc when sony comes out with a HDD player (NOTE it's not an MP3 Player nor would it be legit to say ATRAC player at this point in time because all supported formats haven't been mentioned yet) sporting 30 hours battery with 20 gigs of space. well i'm sure this is gonna make ipod users cringe or would be ipoders but do you think this have alteast the slightest capabality to cripple the minidisc? bearing in mind that this new unit is slated to debut before December and the long anticipated HI-MD is not even quite out of it's shell yet. well we'll just have to see i guess

Mat What's "wave" software and i'm really bugged by the delay i'm wondering what may b the cause..
  22. LOL st00pid... can you actually talk like Dexter?
  23. ha ha.. sorry man lazybones i feel ur pain man you're taking this thing really hard.. sad to hear you're about to develop hate for sony ..but they're not that bad all over.. try using some of their other products where it seems they put more value into making like their cameras, cam corders, televisions, sterios, headphones and some others....
