  1. NO SUCH LUCK. The same announcement states that the 8xx series will get an update, but that the older models (including the 7xx) won't. They press release DID STATE that they are planning on continuing to keep Sonic Stage up to date for those who need SSCP. It seems to say they won't develop it any further, but will keep it current with windows updates. Good enough for me. I am very excited about the A8xx being updated. Now I can get that cool indigo colored one and upgrade the firmware on it for drag and drop. I tried the 6xx model and while it acts exactly like the 8xx models, it just doesn't look as nice and is a bit too small for me.
  2. Just a few quick questions.... When Sony phases out Sonic Stage completely (after March 2008) what will happen to HiMD if a future Windows update breaks Sonic Stage? How will someone be able to upload recordings to the PC other than in real time? Does the end of Sonic Stage only include the West or is it being phased out in Japan as well? I was looking at the RH1 for recording classes and also to support my Japanese studies, but after reading about the end of Sonic Stage, I am unsure if this would be a decent purchase. I realize the unit doesn't need the PC to work, but I need the PC support. I haven't tried the HiMD renderer software. Also, can the RH1 upload to the PC/Mac without software support? Anyone expect a firmware update to allow this? Thanks. Joe

    S700 on the cheap.

It was the 706f and it is going back. The control button is loose and wobbles when barely touched. I have played with demo models of the 7xx series at Akihabara and none showed this problem, so this one must be a dud. I am back to deciding between the: 1. Sony NWZ-A818 2. Cowon D2 3. Apple iPod touch The sony has great sound, but so does the cowon. I am a bit concerned with cowon's support history, but their units sound great and have the most features. The iTouch has many features I could use as a returning university student, especially the email and web capabilities. Too bad there is no bluetooth keyboard support right now as this would make a nice laptop replacement for note taking and such. I will post what I get in the correct forum.

Well mine came today and I accepted it as I need a unit for the gym. It is NOT a U.S. model as we expected, in fact it is the European unit. Does this mean there is a volume limiter on it? Seems loud enough and supports kanji and kana with applocal. I am still worried about the warranty. I will ring Sony and find out the details on coverage.
  5. Sony doesn't need to continue to provide ATRAC ripping capability, merely the ability to allow drag-drop of ATRAC to the new units. Future rips could be in a new format. Of course that entails removing the DRM from the current tracks.

If is not a U.S. released unit, sony can easily refuse service. It is purely up to sony as they sometimes will cover international units and even Japanese units. I ordered the new iPod touch today...and a few hours later cancelled the order. It is a good thing (for me) that they are not even shipping until the end of September! I love the unit's functionality, but the lack of HD for that price is pretty hard to swallow. Once again I have returned to Sony....just ordered an 8GB A818.
  7. As a returning university student...I would like the mp3 player, browser, and hopefully more OSX apps on it later on. Consider it like a 21st century Newton. BUT....I acutally cancelled my order for the iPod touch. I just couldn't get myself to pay $440.00 for 16GB of storage. Maybe when this price drops or they add a HD to it...unlikely. Until then I am ordering the A818. I don't care about gapless.
  8. Well, Sony could have allowed for SS support. The problem is that SS is no longer going to be updated by Sony, so some day in the future, a Microsoft update will break SS and then what? Folks will complain that SS does not work and Sony is evil. Sony is doing the best that they can. With true multi OS drag-and-drop...what is the problem? What should have been done it remove all the DRM nonsense from ATRAC and allow the ATRAC files to be copied via the OS as well. Then you get the ATRAC benefits without the need for SS...but I really don't know how possible this is. Joe

Someone else told me the same thing just yesterday. This make me wonder about the warranty. Will Sony suppport such a device? Who knows, but I am going to send it back to J and R becaue of possible warranty issues and the future lack of support for SS. IF SS is broken by a Microsoft update, then I would be out of luck, so i think i will get the new A818 instead.
  10. My fear is that a Windwos update will break SS in the future. Then what? If Sony isn't supporting SS anymore, then at that point the hardware is useless. Unless there is a firmware update, i may return the unopened unit I just bought myself for one of the new models.
  11. Now that it has been confirmed that the U.S. models will handle hangul/kanji/kana I am ready to buy!!!! I have no use for gapless or sonic stage myself, but it would have been nice to still offer it as it is done on the PSP. Having said that, the multi OS option (MTP/UMS) MORE than makes up for that!! count me in...but where is the indigo color? WHY is silver the premium Sony Style color in the U.S.? Meh. I am NOT an Apple fanboy, but after seeing the options that the new iPod has to offer, Sony is going to be in a world of hurt IF they try to compete head-to-head. I hope Sony settles on a nice niche in the U.S. and does the best they can, quality wise.
  12. We can always us CDs versus online services. My main concern is that (as mentioned earlier) that some future MS update will make SS no longer an option since Sony won't be upgrading the software.
  13. I think many folks have given up on Sony. Plus, if it were not for this site I wouldn't have know about these units. Is Sony even trying to advertise them? Many folks might be waiting for the new iPods next week as well. At least with WMP we now have easy kana and kanji support. Something that SS never gave us.
  14. I said the same thing in another post. If Sony can support ATRAC via SS on the PSP and at the same time support mp3 via explorer/os x drag-and-drop...WHY can they not do this for the new units?

Let me rephrase, I have never seen a 4GB S7xx series in the U.S.

I is a better price than what was sold locally at the Fry's in Arlington, TX. They wanted 199.00 for a 2GB and 159.00 for a 1GB. That was about 5 months ago. Now they are selling them on clearance at $114.00 for 2GB and $99.00 for 1GB. I went with the JR.com site for my 4gb. I hope that isn't a typo as I have never seen a 4gb model outside of Japan. I will let folks know around 9/7. Joe
  17. Just a comment. According to Sony's site (U.S.) the new NWZ-A818 playsback MP3 and WMA and also SUPPORTS AAC. Sony has said it supports a format before only to convert it beforehand. How would this work now as there will be no sonicstage? Heck does even really mean that AAC need converstion? I hope someone with more knowledge will help me out on this one... Joe
  18. It will convert most DVD's, but it chocked on a couple of mine. Also, you have to have the PSP connected during the conversion process...even if that takes hours.
  19. I agree with pata. I understand the limitations of just using unicode versus the full Japanese SS version, but for some of us, unicode support is enough. My japanese and korean are limited (kanji is the biggest hurdle), but it is still eaiser to find a song if the title shows up in kanji, kana or hangul versus just ????. If Apple is capable of providing this feature, then Sony should be able to as well. Also, my preference to searching my music is via the albums or singers/bands, so that cuts down the choices significantly compared to a fully search through the entire song list. Overall, I guess it doesn't matter much anymore as I think Sony's lack of support in the U.S. has pretty much made the the need for unicode in SS moot. In a short period of time Sony will simply not matter in regards to DAPs here in the U.S. Sure a small minority might use them, but Sony seems to accepted defeat (unfortunately) and left the U.S. to Apple. After visiting Akihabara in May, I was just astounded at how few products Sony chooses to send here. The S7xx series and the A8xx series were EVERYWHERE. Of course I believed the sales people when they said the A8xx series isn't supported by English OSes. Now I would have to pay an additional $50.00 to $100.00 to import an A808 since Sony refuses to sell them here in the States, but will sell them just north in Canada and in the U.K. as well. Go figure.
  20. The true drag-and-drop can also been seen in the PSP. Anyone can directly drag and drop .mp3 or .aac files to the PSP and instantly listen . It is fascinating that Sony's most difficult competitor isn't Apple, etc., but itself. In regards to the earlier comment regarding language support. We have waited and waited and waited since the inception of SS and we still have no Kanji/Kana support in the West, yet Apple implemented this iTunes without any problems.
  21. I have learned to deal with SS, but what I cannot deal with is the lack of support Sony has for us in the U.S. WHY is it that they are selling the NW-A808 in Canada, but not in the U.S.? Is this going to be a repeat of the Axxxx series players? Are we to expect the cast off versions of the NW-Axxx series a year or two down the line? I just do not understand how Sony makes these crazy decisions. I can live with having to order it through the SonyStyle website, but heck, I cannot even do that, nor will Sony Canada ship to the U.S. Maybe I should add South Canada to my shipping address... Or should I just give up on Sony completely???
  22. In relation to my sale http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=17919 Raintheory was easy to deal with and provided excellent communication. Thanks and enjoy all of my old minidisc goodness. PS. The only thing I had trouble really parting with was my Hello Kitty 80 min disc. I SOOO miss that disc.
  23. I have seen (often) 4gb SD cards for $45.00 to $60.00 U.S. in my area (D/FW). Consider that 4 HiMD discs cost 4x$6.99 = $27.96 and I feel the HiMD discs really don't have much of an advantage anymore, especially if I could insert them into a very rugged (please please please) recorder with no moving parts. Wow, the idea of a flash recorder with 2 or 3 SD slots fills me with glee. I would have to carry around 8 - 12 HiMD discs to match that.
  24. It looks like the unit, discs and mic are sold. Joe
