  1. When I get back to Canada I'm in the market for at least one step-up 110V-220V voltage converter so I can use a Chinese 220V NH1 back home. I know you can find simple wall-plug converters pretty easy on Ebay, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for some that can be found mor easily in stores like Staples/Best Lie/etc? peace WaywardTraveller
  2. Thanks for the helpful information! But what you say begs the question...why would they advertise these different sampling rates if you're unable to use them/unable to set different sampling rates?!? peace WaywardTraveller
  3. Thanks guys...can anyone address the sampling rate issue? I understand it basically as: the higher the kHz, the more detail and quality in the sample (and more file space required in principle). Is this correct? Even so, I'm not sure why you'd want to switch sampling rates, as I see 44.1 as being pretty standard...? peace WaywardTraveller
  4. It finally happened....the RH1 is starting to catch my eye more and more often. I do, though, have some questions for those of you who are fluent in this stuff and/or own the RH1 already: 1. Are the spectrum analyzer and "11 Segment Recording Level Meter Display" actually useful, or is it more eye-candy than anything else? 2. I know that the MZ-M200 is the RH1 + mic., but Minidisc-Canada states some "differences" in its webpages that I'd like clarification on: under "Main Recording Function" for the M200 page there's a reference to "Optical input 32kHz/44.1kHz/48kHz" - my newbie knowledge told me that everything is more or less sampled in 44.1Khz, so what do the differences in sampling rate mean, in fact? I did a search and got a bit of information, but am not sure what the end-result difference wopuld be if you're listening to, say, 32kHz vs. 44.1kHz. 3. Has anyone actually put the RH1 up against the NH900/NH1 to compare playback sound quality? Also, trolling through some old threads, many have great things to say about Sharp's Auvi 1-bit amp...any comparison between that and Sony's Hi-MD HD digital amp? peace WaywardTraveller
  5. Hmm...I have to go back and experiment, cos I've done so many tests I can't remember now! lol...I DO know that (as you said) fiddling with the remote while recording, i.e. changing the rec level DOES produce hiss. I also remember that my two different mics register the hiss louder/softer depending on which one I'm using. I didn't find out until later that the TFB-2s I have come in high- and low-sensitivity models, and have no idea which one I have. Do you hear any hiss at all either way with LINE recordings, A440? So you say, A440, that you haven't had problems if, say, you start recording, turn on HOLD on the remote so nothing will register, and then only turn off HOLD and change levels between songs/important parts? Will have to check that out...thanks again! peace WaywardTraveller
  6. I'm not sure this applies to making loud recordings, but it might be worth keeping in mind that if you attach a backlit remote during recording, pushing buttons, changing settings, etc. with it while recording WILL produce hiss and interference on the recording...but more experienced people than I here can tell you if it really matters for a concert recording like Tool. peace WaywardTraveller
  7. I know I'm bumping an old thread here, but I have to express my agreement (and disappointment) with not being able to MIC-record using the 40ELK (and others). I've had the same problems, and my 40ELK has clamps too. I guess it doesn't matter for louder recordings (does it?), but it just seems a bit dumb to integrate the remote with recording when it interferes with the quality. I'd use LINE permanently, if it weren't so quiet. So at the risk of asking the obvious...is there any way to remove the interference? Any add-on accessory or something? I am going back to school and anticipate recording many spoken lectures, but don't want that annoying static hiss in the background. peace WaywardTraveller
  8. I'm not sure about the RH1, but the RH10/RH910 also allow you to view a list of (but not execute/access) files stored via USB on a Hi-MD-formatted disc. peace WaywardTraveller
  9. Sparda: if you think *I* have lots of units...I don't think I can even touch some of the others on this forum! In other news re: "differences" between the NH900 and the NH1's digital amps...I went back to my hotel room, looked on the back of each, and firmly resolved never again to use the Equipment Browser at least until it's revised and Wikified.. peace WaywardTraveller
  10. Waitasec (uh-oh lol)...at the risk of a replay of my past posts ( ), although the "Differences" thread in "Hi-MD Essentials" says otherwise, I checked the Equipment Browser and the NH900 and NH1 seem to have different amps (on that page, anyways lol): the NH900's is digital while the NH1 has the HD amp: http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NH1.html http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NH900.html If this is true, would I be amiss in venturing that the NH1 and RH1 have the same HD amps?? peace WaywardTraveller
  11. In response to those of you who asked me why I'd want a third NH1....it's because....[lowers head humbly] I am a junkie. I AM partly curious as to whether it's a good price or a rip-off...but also, quite frankly I thought before "Why would I want an NH1?" - and then I tinkered with the one I bought - it's fast becoming my favourite recording and playback unit (I'm currently toting around an NH700, NH900 and an NH1! )...the battery is much nicer and I'm a sucker for the 40ELK too.. jaylen: you're right...I think there might be some psychosomatics in there, cos even though I haven't done any "scientific" testing (lol), I'm often convinced there's just a BIT more clarity ...I had thought about waiting and getting an RH1, but the MP3 playback doesn't matter so much to me, and that is (more or less) the only significant addition for me. That, combined with the now-infamous idea of "stocking up for the winter" (I won't mention any names, but YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE ) is, pushing me towards taking advantage of it now as opposed to paying more for it in Canada (including postage, etc etc). And if I were gonna sell a unit, it would probably be my NH700..sorry heh. mmmmmmmm....gold, silver, gold aaaghaghaghagghhhhh [Homer Simpson] peace WaywardTraveller
  12. Assuming you don't already have one (if you do)...and forgetting about your current unit roster... A silver NH1 (Chinese) for CAD260, no tax, and probably comes with an optical cable (like my last one), MC40ELK....all the usual accoutrements. Wouldchya? I'm stuck, cos it's CAD260, but at first Ithought it would soundlike the nh900....but itsounds soooooo good with better battery life! hmmm..... peace WaywardTraveller
  13. I, too, am now wondering if anyone's been able to get in to service mode on the MZ-NH1. I'd like to hack my Chinese NH1 specifically to "transform" it into a North American/Australian model to eliminate the nonsensical restrictions on no./variety of titling characters that the Asian/African models are purported to have. The net cafes here don't seem to have either MSN or Adobe Acrobat installed(?!), so I can't read the service manuals. But if anyone can be so kind as to furnish me (and others) with a step-by-step procedure on how to do such a thing (the lists of values just don't make much sense to me in and of themselves) that would be just peachy! A question, while on this topic: if I title a Hi-MD disc/tracks using North American character sizes on, say, my RH910, and then play it on my Chinese NH1, will it display? Or is my NH1 limited to just displaying such titles and not editing? Ideas? peace WaywardTraveller
  14. Just to <bump> my previous question....is it possible in SS 4.0 to queue more than one album at a time for transfer to MD? Whenever I tried this on my old SS it would crash after the first album (if it even got that far). peace WaywardTraveller
  15. It does indeed sound like the RH10 is more for you than the RH1. However, you might want to check out this thread: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16703 which lists specific problems several users have had with the RH10 (myself included). I really suggest you read that for your information....also, keep in mind that the RH910 (if you can find it) is exactly like the RH10 except for the display. I have one, and can confidently say that the unit is sturdier than my RH10 was. Happy MDing! peace WaywardTraveller
  16. POST FLAGGED AND REPORTED TO MODERATOR. peace WaywardTraveller
  17. I disgree with this and think this is a pretty unfair and elitist thing to say. First, some people here are moaners (which may change from topic to topic); second, I'm certainly in to MD and into recording to a certain (amateur) extent, but the fact is that the recording quality of the RH1 and, say, the NH600 are identical; the PCM quality of recordings made on either will be the same. If there's anything out there that proves otherwise, I'd like to see it. Then again, what do I know? I don't own an RH1... peace WaywardTraveller
  18. The problems you people are having with the RH10 are, unfortunately, well-known: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16703 Even though the NH900 is a pretty sturdy uit, the one I bought in Beijing has a similar (although minor) problem: the STOP button on the unit will often go very wonky - sometimes it will FF to the next track, sometimes it will beep twice as it stops THEN resumes play...etc. Fortunately, when recording STOP always works fine, and the top part of the button (Pause) has no problems. The RH10 problems are a real shame, because it's an aesthetically beautiful unit. peace WaywardTraveller
  19. For those of you who may happen to find yourselves in Urumqi (capital of Xinjiang province in the far west), there's a good electronics market there as well: First, get yourself to the intersection of Renmin Road and South Jiefang Road (Renmin Lu/Jiefang Nan Lu) (basically take the road due east from the Long-Distance Bus Station)...you should be around a Bank Of China with lots of moneychangers hanging around outside. Walk west a block or two until you see a covered market on the north side of Renmin Lu; there is a symbol over the entrance that looks like a yellow '2' as part of a circle. Just walk around in there and ask about (Hi-)MD...it's a good idea to bring a unit and/or discs to show them in case you can't speak the language or they have no idea what it is...if they see it (i.e. the Hi-MD logo), if they don't carry it they will often ask around on your behalf and tell you where you can go to find it. I found a new silver MZ-NH1 for the equivalent of CAD262, no tax (is this a good price?). On the second floor (by a stairwell) are shops that sell mostly computer stuff, but don't be fooled; media shops (look for the shelves full of CD-Rs) often sell MDs - just ask. There's a shop by a staircase (look for a small little cubbyhole with the CDs/MDs on the right) where I got 20 Saehan Natural Wave 74min MDs, a 10pk of Sony Neige 80min MDs, ad a multicolour 3pk of the TDK HOs for just slightly over CAD1.00 each. peace WaywardTraveller
  20. First off, welcome to the world of minidisc. While I wouldn't characterize all of the complaints about SS as "griping and moaning," I would agree that some of the criticisms of the software are less relevant than others. IMHO, I don't think "drag-and-drop" is such a big deal, especially in context of the (admittedly unscientific) poll here concerning 4th-gen features. If you really wanted a good feature in keeping with MD's purported emphasis as a recorder, I'd think drag-n-drop wouldn't be as important as, for example, more bitrate variety. To reiterate my own problems with the software - I really dislike the way SS can take control of the files on your HD (if you let it), and the organization of music files under SS is a bit cryptic. I must say, though - I've never had any problem with UL/DL from SS that wasn't due to a crappy, outdated OS. peace WaywardTraveller
  21. lol I really hope you're right...the Equipment Browser is a great idea; I don't know about the Wiki interface, but I hope there's space for the entries to be modified/commented on blog-style by users who actually own the units. peace WaywardTraveller
  22. I was tongue-in-cheek too, as evidenced by my own tongue-sticking-out smiley . But at the risk of making this more important than it actually is (which it already is), when I looked in to it before posting I was using the minidisc.org Equipment Browser, which didn't say anything about remotes. I always Search before asking questions, and have usually had my questions answered well enough...but that, combined with my assumed knowledge, let me to question a post here. Oh, well. I'll know better next time. re: the two responses to "my reading every single thread"....apparently not only smileys, but sarcasm gets no respect anymore either...lol peace WaywardTraveller
  23. 9X000: I won't be going to HK again (I'd have to buy another Chinese visa if I did), but can you tell me where in Guangzhou I might find MD stuff? I am headed to Vietnam and could easily pass by there . peace WaywardTraveller
  24. bland: only Hi-MD as far as I've seen...often I have to show them my NH700 and/or MDs so that they understand what the heck I'm talking about! sector001: I don't speak a word of Chinese...but my phrasebook does and as long as they have a calculator and you know the exchange rate, you can definitely bargain! peace WaywardTraveller
  25. lol yeah, that'll teach me for not reading every single thread on the Minidisc Forums before venturing an opinion on something. Guess I was out doing non-nerd/technical things...like, ohh, getting sunlight, kissing girls, etc. peace WaywardTraveller
