  1. I would not use a battery that has become swollen. I would discard it. Paul
  2. USA version of SS 3.4. I also listened to monophonic transfers made with SS 3.3 (USA Version) and the tracks were centered with that version as well. Paul
  3. The "priming the pump" method worked for me. I had six multiartist discs to transfer. Started one and waited for it to actually begin the writing of a track (a few percent), then selected the others as a group and transferred. They all wrote fine. Nice workaround. Paul
  4. I encoded some early '60s "British Invasion" monophonic recordings with SS3.4 at 192k on MZ-RH10 and listened to with a direct connection to the headphone jack with Sennheiser PX100. The results were perfectly centered to my ears. Swapped the headphone drivers around. Still centered. Paul
  5. I've been able to burn mulitple albums in a single pass to Hi-MD (even with SS3.4) but from what I can tell, the problem concerns transferring imported discs with multiple artists/compilations. SS locks up pretty good. Can't even stop the transfer. It sits in limbo. Paul
  6. I wonder if Simple Burner will be updated to include the new bitrates? Paul
  7. Has anyone noticed a problem with writing multiple various albums to Hi-MD (MZ-RH10) in one pass? Seems to happen with 192K and 256K so far. SS seems to lock up and I have to write the albums individually to Hi-MD. Paul
  8. 25 - Hi-MD 27 - 80min MD 46 - 74min MD 14 - 60min MD Many of 60 and 74 minute blanks were acquired around 93-96 when they were'nt cheap. My local Sony dealer would give me a break on a box of five since I bought the players from him. Paul
  9. What sort of revision? Beginning with what serial #? Or is it a new revision based upon a new batch with the fix to the lettering problem? Paul

    Is MD dead?

I don't think MD has to worry until reusuable 1GB flash chips are priced at less than $7 each. MD *might* have trouble when those chips reach $2 each. Otherwise -- let the good times roll! Paul
  11. So, with SS 3.4 what's the complete list of rates we can import and transfer directly to Hi-MD? 48,64,132,192,256....? Paul
  12. Hello, Has anyone tried to use a RM-MC40ELK with an MZ-N10 and/or a D-NE10? If so, does it function well? Does the multiline feature display properly? Is the display scrollable with these MD / CD units? Thanks! Paul
  13. Some the portable recorders are so thin and small, bury it in thick wallet and hand them the wallet. Make sure there's a little change in there to provide some diversionary metal. ;-) Paul
  14. That's it! Need to get some mic elements, a couple of 10K resistors, 9V clip, a couple of capacitors, and some black, cheap earbuds. Time to retire the "brick" and make version two binaural! Paul
  15. Yep, a cast aluminum box with four screws. It will out live me! I doubt it has to be that sturdy or that large. It was a first attempt from years ago built to withstand the "rigors" of live recording. The switch made things quite complicated. Also, the box was over built with independent 9V power supplies, so there are two 9V batteries in the box. Your design of "plug in the battery" as the "switch" makes much more sense. Paul
  16. For me, a recent RH10 purchaser, HiMD is on its way *in*! When flash player/recorders reach 100 GIG, I might be interested. Paul
  17. greenmachine, Here's a picture of the mic and box I built some years ago. Paul
  18. Hello, Trying to put 30 CDs on 1 HiMD at 64K -- a total of about 670 songs. I'm running out of space for song titles / artist / album titles. How iis the approx 55,000 limit calculated? Song Title + Album Title + Artist Name for *every* song? For example: Come Together + Abbey Road + The Beatles = 34 chars Her Majesty + Abbey Road + The Beatles = 32 chars If that's the case, then if one had a long album/artist names, one could use up 55,000 chars rather quickly Paul
  19. greenmachine, Great pictures! Now that's a "box" I could live with! Paul
  20. Why are the battery modules always so large? Even my homemade battery box is large. But, I don't think they have to be. I can imagine slim inline tube integrated into the cord with no switch -- if the battery is installed, it's working -- use a stack of 3 3.6 Lithium photo batteries. These "power boxes" (and the associated connectors) are stealth killers, in my view. Just a thought. Paul
  21. To reduce bulk, I don't bring in headphones. It was just a fluke (but very unfortunate) accident, never happened again! Paul
  22. Who knows what the top unit is.... Notice that the layout of the screen items on the "LCD" unit is different than the layout of the OLED unit. I noticed that picture at Sony Style a while ago and wrote Sony about it. The OLED is a *huge* selling point. Received no reply. In any event (as an RH10 owner), the USA RH10 comes as seen in the second photo (except for the Japanese characters!) Paul
  23. Nothing wrong with using *charged* NiMH batteries in the unit, however, using the charge circuit designed for NiCd with NiMH may be a problem. Each battery type has its own recharge characteristics and a properly designed recharge circuit will adhere to those characteristics. What one can "get away with" is difficult to tell. It could be, in the long run, less than optimum battery performance or decreased life. Paul
  24. Right! Stuck in the venue and nothing to do about it. At a recent outdoor concert it had rained like crazy about an hour before and the area next to the concert used for parking was being cleared for construction and was mostly powdered limestone. Mixed with the rain, the "mud" was more like liquid cement -- car, shoes, lower extremities, either wet or caked with the stuff. Slicker than snot -- at the time. Had the MZ-N10 and the Sony ECM-CS10 stereo business mic. I try to travel as light as possible. This place, in my experience, had never "pat down" before but, sure enough, they were doing it this time. I try to keep stuff divided up so as not to to look bulky or have have bulges that would attract attention -- just in case. I empty the wallet except for necessities and keep the MZ-N10 next to it so if I'm asked to take something out, the wallet would look and feel like what was there. Top to bottom they checked. Passed the pat down even though they touched the recorder. Inside! As it got dark, slipped out the mic clipped it to the lapel, ran the mic cord to the pocket -- everything else by feel. Recorded the show, no problems. Leaving the show the area was still a mess, found some paper to line the car's carpet. The next morning the car and shoes were covered in this stuff now dried -- just like rock. Wet down the shoes and broke off the rock hard limestone, hosed down the car let it set, rinced off what I could and then off to the car wash. Paul
