  1. You are forgetting a fourth possibility: Linux gains enough marketshare to break the Microsoft monopoly on the desktop. Let's see how many antitrust lawsuits are necessary to achieve this.
  2. You can set any MD-Recorder to mono, but that is old MD, which CANNOT be uploaded. Since almost noone is using mono, it has been left out of PCM/Hi-SP. On low bitrates, Joint-Stereo is used, so an extra Mono setting would gain nothing in recording time. What could be done is connecting both channels together in the microphone plug, so that both channels get the same signal. That can slightly reduce the noise from the microphone amp when adding the channels later in the wave editor.
  3. Then it was my old Windows installation. Windows sucks...
  4. Hmm, 2.1 never played gapless on my system here. But you're right, 2.2 which runs now here after I had to expedite my old Win-install, does play gapless from Harddisk. On the other paw, the fresh install runs much smoother, so I'm not 100% sure about the 2.1. (Hint at Sony: The Backup-Tool is in dire need of some optimization.)
  5. Never. Reason: The whole RF processing circuitry between Laser and Atrac-Codec has to be replaced, since PRML needs a completely different signal conditioning. In addition, you have to replace the Reed-Solomon decoder with a suitable DSP for the PRML encoding. Oh, and a new Atrac-Codec is necessary as well. That is only for Hi-MD formatted Standard MDs. If you think about using 1GB discs, replace the laser and its control circuitry as well. Don't you think, that buying a new recorder is easier? And cheaper?
  6. I highly doubt, that this one will survive very long. Too many people will confuse it with a bottle of shower gel - wondering why nothing comes out of that bottle. Methinks, Sony is in dire need of some designers...
  7. You can search for Artist, Album, Group, Track. The difference between Album and Group is, that a Group can be created ON the recorder while Albums are created by SonicStage.
  8. We have a daily bunch of redundand questions, so why not placing a box above the "News/Announcements" containing links to the most important FAQs. (In the hope, that someone finally reads them before asking the same stuff all over again)
  9. Correct. Group == Album. Nesting of Albums/Groups is not possible. The Artist's Name is available in one of the Display options: Menu --> Display --> Title1 or Title2.
  10. You can't set trackmarks with the NH600D (USA-Version). It is a Downloader only. If you want to edit or standalone recording, take atleast the NHF800(USA). Only the european NH600 can set Trackmarks and can record from LineIn/Digital. Speaking of gapless, yes, standalone playback IS gapless, standalone recording of course too. Ripping from CD onto MD using SonicStage, then playing standalone is mostly gapless, it can depend on the CD-drive used for ripping. SonicStage itself cannot play gapless, regardless of what it plays. Oh, and welcome to the Forum.
  11. Yes it is. After download, the installer is launched. A window pops up, where you have to agree to the License agreement. At that point, don't click on anything, instead search for a directory named: "SSWebUpg". Copy that directory to a different place/drive. Then proceed with the install. The setup program is here: "where ever you dropped that folder into"SSWebUpgExtractSetup.exe The hole shebang is roughly 85 MB big.
  12. Normally, it should be always at 0%. Unless you can be sure, that the signal never goes above a certain level, then you can boost the signal by the difference between that level and fullscale. Boost to much and the signal clips. And that doesn't sound good. Generally, boosting should be avoided, as that can possibly introduce additional artefacts. You might want to do a listening test...
  13. Flamewars are useful: http://www.kevinandkell.com/1996/kk0611.html
  14. By unsoldering the offending parts and replacing them with normal aluminium electrolytic capacitors. However, if your cd-player sounds clear and clean as it should be, you don't have to do anything. Besides, any work on it invalidates the warranty... I would say, leave it as it is.
  15. You have to backup your Library first, using the SonicStage Backup Tool, before doing the uninstall/install and then you restore from that backup. Oh, and it is highly recommended, that you regularly backup your library to prevent data loss in case your Windows f**ks up like mine did this weekend.
  16. That was my experience with the standalone codec from Xing. Of course, it is possible, that the codec included with SoundForge is better, but since I don't own this software, I can't confirm.
  17. Yes, you're right, you can upload only once. And you must allow SonicStage to delete the track from the MD to be able to edit it in SonicStage. However, that can be avoided. See here: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=6329
  18. There are differences. LAME with the high-quality settings is the best, the Fraunhofer codec quickly following. The worst are the codecs from Xing. They are as fast as diarrhea and the result sounds like diarrhea...
  19. Throwing out the tantalums was a good idea. Tantalum capacitors have some physical properties, which can result in audible distortions. Standard aluminum caps have a much better linearity. Tantalum caps should only be used, where space is at an absolute premium (hearing aids / bugs)
  20. Let's get serious here I say... Minidisc: Pro: Good for recording, good soundquality, cheap durable media, Capacity can be expanded indefinitely by buying more discs and generally good to excellent running times per battery charge. Contra: SonicStage, the supplied software for transferring. Marcnets software alleviates that a bit. MP3-Player: Pro: Higher initial capacity, easier music transfer. Contra: Capacity either not expandable or if expandable, the media is prohibitively expensive, most MP3 players cannot record through line/mic/optical, most of those which can record standalone deliver lousy results, mediocre to lousy running times per battery charge, Harddisk-based players are more sensitive to mechanical shock. Basically, if you have tons of music, that you want to take with you all at once, then a harddisk-mp3-player might be the right choice, in most other cases, a Hi-MD recorder seems to be the better choice. It is just more flexible...
  21. It does. As the resulting file is a standard wave file, playable everywhere. Of course, you can compress that and use the Hi-MD to transport the files. Atrac3 vs MP3: Hi-SP ~ MP3@320k Hi-LP@64k ~ MP3@96k Hi-LP@48k ~ MP3@64k MD-LP2@132k ~ MP3@160k MD-LP2@105k ~ MP3@128k MD-LP4@66k ~ MP3@64k MP3-values are approximate and can differ depending on music and the way that music has been recorded. Hope that helps.
  22. That's normal. The plug shouldn't sit supertight, as that would place too much stress on the socket, when inserting or removing the plug.
  23. Another reason NOT to vote for Bush: http://forum.darwinawards.com/index.php?showtopic=5914 Obviously, Republicans don't like criticism.
  24. Like this one: Plus USB, plus PS/2 connector for a keyboard, minus the DRM/SCMS crap.
