Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread? [part III]
Ppk3000 replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
My guess is that the 5mW is more than enough to power cheaper headphones to even higher class earbuds... of course any monitor/DJ 'phones would demand a lot more. I think the demanding 'phones will still work, except the extreme frequency ranges might slightly lose clarity and volume. -
Nice review, except I have two questions: - Does the remote feel like anything or is the slight increase in size not affecting the weight? - What headphones/earbuds you use to listen to the music based on your judgement of sound quality..? (don't say the stock earbuds )

http://www.audiocubes.com/product_info.php...products_id=538 http://www.audiocubes.com/product_info.php...products_id=204 I'm pretty sure Sony sells them too... except much more expensive than retailers I bet :whatever:

Take your time

So are we looking forward to a review from you?

I believe the measurement is the amount of memory buffer (in MegaBytes?) the "shock protection" has to hold pre-fetched temporary data. Obviously the larger the better, but also a higher drain on the battery. How does one test? I have no idea...

I think the NH900/NH1 will arrive together in Canada... similar to what happened with the NH700/NHF800. (Sony and their endless lies about arrival dates... :whatever:)
-
That makes the 2 of us  In short: I'm going iPod if it had a mic jack to record from. The iTalk Voice Recorder is not going to be good enough to record live instrumental music.

new to forums with some questions maybe someone can help me
Ppk3000 replied to sonyuser_r70's topic in Minidisc
You need Sony's SonicStage software (download at connect.com) and the PC >> MD USB cable connected both ends to transfer audio from the computer to the MD. A "nice audio sound" recording solution is to spend a lil bit more on the microphone (and maybe a amp box depending on what you're recording). I have no idea what your budget is, thus "broke" means little to me . -
Nah, I go with whatever seems most logical and suits me best. I want to buy an iPod for the better convinience of managing music, but the voice recording won't do for my instrumental needs. Plus I'm on a limited budget so I'd have to make it my recorder AND player (unless someone here wants to donate me an iPod )... Anyway I do not strongly support either of the 2 often-compared portable audio units here. (P.S.: Would I be singing about it from the rooftops if the NH1 beat the iPod? Well possibly... at least then I'd know I'm a happy camper with a truly quality recording + playback audio unit! ... yes I can only dream... :whatever:)

The sound isn't BAD heh... at Hi-SP paired with mid-level buds/phones, the sound is satisfactory for the majority of us, especially for the purpose of listening on-the-go where you wouldn't always have the chance to carefully listen to the detail of the sound. However, some people have much higher expectations and must pick out any noticeable flaws. They make good reviewers of themselves but sometimes you shouldn't take their opinion too heavily: reviews and contrasting comments are meant to clearly show the strongs and weaks, and it's up to you to decide in the end.

The idea of looping the headphone out back into line-in to record radio should theoritically work, but I don't think the MD can record and play the tuner at the same time. And even if it could, as you said, the realtime recording "preview" sound coming out of line-out would create the loop feedback effect. So I think the option is to use an alternate recording device, but I don't think that's what you had in mind.

You should use Hi-SP encoding if you want the closest compressed replication of the original source.
-
Why not just buy it from japan-direct? It's as simple as their name...
-
Seeing how the functionality of all the Hi-MD players are about the same in general, Sony had to make SOME feature differences else they would have nothing to advertise about for their higher end models  Sounds like your experience with the NHF800 sucks though... then again it shouldn't be TOO bad as long as it works. http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NHF800.html : It's not backlit?? Hmmm... I guess the webmaster better fix the Hi-MD equipment browser section then.

Let's hope that WAV utility will allow us to ignore their protection for some recordings...

Heh, interestingly enough, I am listening to music with my EX71's plugged into my (Creative MegaWorks 5.1) speaker's headphones out jack in the night right now. These 'phones aren't bad, and it serves its purpose as a mid to lower-high range performer. However, I feel the output sound is pre-amped in a certain way, possibly in the typical "contrast boost" pattern increasing the high/low frequency dynamics, giving nicer but not higher quality sound... that would explain for the lack of clarity in the middle range and section. Nevertheless, the quality on these would beat the stock sony MDR-E8xx series anyday. So is the rich sounding bass really natural high quality or just tweaked? I wouldn't be too certain to call it quality. Still, they are great for casual listening and on the go (I wouldn't want to have a pair of ER's torn/destroyed by accident, so cheaper and lesser will have to the compensation )
-
It's probably the ATRAC encoding. Make sure you use Hi-SP for the closest encoded audio from its original format (Hi-SP next to PCM, but that option does not even give you 2 hours of room on a 1GB disk) The "High Definition Digital Ampifier" built in the NH1 could be causing some problems, but personally I am not sure (haven't used a Hi-MD unit myself yet). Most people say the fancy marketing term is just for conserving battery power while others claim it increases the dynamics of the output audio, making the produced output sound more vibrant and filled with contrast but not necessarily better or higher quality. Try fiddling around with the EQ to get the best compensated settings I suppose... P.S. some people think the iPod (HDD player) sounds better, but I know little about it... I'm pretty sure a happy iPod camper like skyther would be happy to fill you in on that though

Yeah where's mine? bleh, too late! Scary thought...

Well I think it's pretty much to the N10, which I've had for a while. Damn.. the thing is sensitive to fingerprints? :wacky: I guess I'll have to clean my unit every now and then. How is the remote, do you like the design/feel of it?

Wow the gold looks more silver in the photos

Sony RM-MC40ELK + Sony LIP-4WM for sale at Audiocubes!

Are all 3 lines shown if you plug the remote single-line-remote units? -
Sony's WAV utility coming in fall will unprotect analog recordings, so yes, you should be able to extract line-in recordings back to PCM WAV data.
