  1. Dex, Clearly, you came here as some sort of recordist or technically savvy guy. You have such a breadth of knowledge.
  2. Aeriyn, IEM= In Ear Monitors, right? As a drummer, are the IEMs you refer to something I could also use while a smashin and a bashin? If so, I might be able to kill two investment birds with one IEM stone. OK, that was stupid, but ya know what I mean?
  3. How I found it was 1. curiosity about my impending investment and wanting to make informed choices with my couple o' bucks. 2. Google search. A very good thing. 3. minidisc.org product reviews and everything else minidisc.org What got me hooked was 1. members like Dex Otaku, A440, Kurisu et al who are so sincere and forthcoming with information and who just do it because it moves them. I mean, this is a hobby/recreational activity for most of us. To have such knowlwdgeable people offer unbiased information and relentless (often redundant) support kinda makes ya feel all warm and fuzzy because you know they're doing it because they love it. I can only imagine that when these forums started, there were not such diverse topics and dynamic content and stuff. It was most likely the people involved who were diverse and dynamic and made this place worth while. From there it grew to be a pretty diverse and informative hang. Then you add folks like...well...me who are learning as they go, having no prior MD experience, but sharing questions and concerns so as to elicit the expertise of y'all. By the way, I must be going on five fucking hours on these here minidisc community forums and I think I'm starting to get a little stupid. So goodnight. It's midnight, 1/16/05 in NY. GREG
  4. Sony 'eggos' 66s and 77s? For when I have the dough, these are my front runners. I don't want anything IN or pressed up against my ears for comfort's sake. I also don't want anything too bulky. I [obviously] want superior clarity and good bass representation. From what I've read about the d66s, they're not OVERLY bassy? That's ok with me, so long as the bass is balanced with the rest of the sound. Do you who have them agree with this so far? What do the 77s offer over the 66s? I also read about a modification I could make to boost the bass. Know about this? How about availability to the USA? Something gave me the impression these are hard to come by. Maybe people are waiting long for 66s from minidisco and 77s are only available in Japan? Finally, if you know of other models that satisfy my requirements, what are they?? For now, let's say price range notwithstanding. I just wanna know what's out there. Hey...you asked!
  5. I have to agree with pretty much everything Dex mentions here. I listened to a good part of the beginning of each show via the streaming option. The Visulite recording sounded "wavy" or "warbley" to me, as things sometimes sound when streaming. Somthins not quite right to my ears. The Variety recording immediately sounds much clearer. I can only imageine it's much closer to how your ears heard it. Yes, sounds like a better room/setting for clarity of sound. I can really monitor the drumming--which is what I naturally focus on, so that serves as sort of a barometer for me. Mark, I'd LOVE to hear the differences between what you got with the AT822whateverwhatever and what an Auris-->Boost Box combo would produce! Hmmmm....
  6. Uh...P.S. I think I'm approaching 3 hours for today alone. Maybe I wasn't being honest with myself before Oh, and Kurisu, I didn't want to bust your chops too much on another thread because I don't know you well enough.....well..at all. BUT, I hope your new job [in GA?] allows you as much time here, for OUR sake! All meant in good fun, of course.
  7. Just curious, How long do you spend here? Whether... browsing or posting at home or at work posting 10 or 100 words per minute on average by day or by week just here. Forget any[internet]where else This is just for fun. But be honest. I've been meaning to ask this for a while. When my wife wanted to know what the hell has been keeping me up so late, I showed her the picture in Shermy's avatar...Oooooh BABY...NH900!! I figure I average about an hour a day here. Obviously, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. Not as torrid an afair as some of you, I hope.
  8. Seems to me that far fewer folks in these MDCF than I imagined actually make use of a separate batt box or preamp. Either you just go mic in or your mic itself is powered? If this is true, my threadmates, I guess WE are the ones who'll have to report on our experiences with such devices. Frontiersmen, eigh? Unless there are any lurkers who care to weigh in on this topic? GREG P.S. I still haven't decided what to buy yet. My $150 continues to sit amongst my socks.
  9. Marc, Thanks for the clarification. This brings a whole set of questions to mind. Please excuse me for the following: 1. This has probably been asked 100 times elsewhere... 2. My lack of technical knowledge. But... I use my NH900 almost exclusively for live and ambient recording. Maybe someday I'll expand to storing [CD] albums and other information on my MDs to take on trips or to the gym or whatever. But for now, all I want to be able to do [like many of you I'm sure] is record my stuff and transfer either to CD or somewhere in the cyberworld like email attachment or website, etc. What's the best way to achieve this while maintaining optimum sound quality [as close to what it sounded like when I was there] yet manageable file size? Am I asking too much? Also, what is flac? What advantages does it have over MP3. Is it recognized as widely as MP3? Anyone? Thanks.
  10. Me too. Well, I was thinking of a pre amp. Which models are you looking at specifically?
  11. On this topic, would it make sense to have BOTH programs handy on my desktop? Sony's WAV converter and Marc's Renderer? Does one program offer more or better than the other?
  12. So then mrsoul, where do you store recordings and stuff you want to keep around?
  13. So, running XP Pro that would be like saving it to a "my music" folder? Anybody use any other crafty methods of preserving recorded material?
  14. SonicStage is UNFORGIVING!! I'm glad I saw this thread because I was about to start a 'SonicStage bashing' topic somewhere. I'll just add my rants here... OK, I admit I may have made mistakes leading to the disappearance of three tracks that werw precious to me, but dammit, I wish SS were a little more user friendly. I'm no computer geek, so you tell me if I should just be pissed at myself and spare sony my rage. My NH900 came with SS 2.0 and I only uploaded a few tracks I'd recorded with my mics of my kids around the house and such. From much of what I'd been reading here at MDCF, I wanted to update to 2.3 before I got into any real important transfers. But these test tracks of my kids really grew on me. You know, cute little voices and so on. I have three yr old twin girls and a one yr old boy. Anyway... Going through the process of installation of 2.3 I saw I had to "uninstall" my old version. To me that meant trash, delete, ya know, adios bye bye. So I loaded my three precious test tracks back onto MD. See where I'm going with this? Installation of SS 2.3 successful. How else would I get my tracks back on the computer? Here's where my lack of tech knowledge may have been my demise. 1. Maybe SS transfers old tracks to new version of software? I dunno. 2. In my haste/excitement I actually forgot about the 2nd transfer rule with SS. I went to load my tracks (back) to SS 2.3 and **poof**... gone. Gone from the computer and gone from the MD. So here's my gripe: Does Sonic Stage have to be so unforgiving and trash MY original recordings which only I have the rights to? iTunes wouldn't do that. Is SONY aware of all the minidisc user communities around the world like this one? Where the actual people who actually purchase and use their products discuss what they like and don't like...want more of or less of? Do they (sony) give us, the consumers, any credit? Or is it just about the $$$$$$ This anti piracy thing has gotten out of hand when my own recordings, of which I'M the damn composer, start disappearing because people are trying to protect the record companies and their billions. Am I off base here? P.S. Thanks for letting me vent.
  15. Hi. Sorry but it doesn't do it for me. Yes the font and size is a bugger, but I immediately noticed the lack of contrast due to the almost grey-on-grey look. For me, the use of blue in the "old" skin helped my eyes organize things better. So, given the way I was able to change skins, will we be given choices so as to personalize our own look? If I like the 'old' can I stay with that? Yeah, after switching back and forth, the blue ("old") skin provides more depth perception and to me, seems more..... uh..... active, less static. GREG K, I don't think it's "gross" per se....
  16. Maybe it's my ears or my speakers, but it sounds to me like the AGC is compensating for every bass drum and snare drum attack. The phasing almost becomes part of the music because it's on every beat. Does anyone else hear what I'm hearing?
  17. A440 and any other recordists, Could you just remind us of the equipment and settings you used? Did I miss that somewhere? So far all recordings are cool and unique in terms of an accurate reproduction of what was actually heard in the room. What a fantastic notion!! A database of MD recordings to complement these forums. I'm envisioning it set up very much like this board: MD recordings by category... live music, nature/ambient, indoor v. outdoor, spoken word. Not so much to trade bootleg recordings, but to discuss and reference the pedagogy behind the recording process and the circumstances involving THAT recording that we can listen to. Cheers!!
  18. I've been thrilled with my nh900's battery life. It only seems when I wear it (battery combo) down to the nub that I don't have enough battery to record. Playback is still fine though for a while. I thought I read in the manual that it's not good to leave the unit on the charger for longer than it requires. Anyone know better?
  19. Hey Dex O, Happy New Year. I hope all's well with you. Are those SP binaurals the same ones folks were saying are going for a pretty cheap price somewhere? Do you recall this? If so, where? I gots ta get me some of those. I'm thrilled with my Auris (reactive) but I'd like to more recording like you guys are talking about. I KNOW I look silly with my foam covered mics clipped to my collar by my ears and it hurts too damn much to clip 'em to my ears...let alone looking silly. But I digress...
  20. DUDE!! A link on minidisc.org to a thread started by li'l ol' me?!? I am absolutely proud and honored!! I had a feeling there might be other people out there with similar questions and experiences to mine. Cool! Seriously, kurisu I tried to PM or email you to tell you this so I wouldn't crowd up the place with this 'non helpful' type stuff. But I couldn't seem to find any way to get to you. I here profiles are back up!! Guess that'd solve my problem in the future. Aaron, I do hope you stick around. It's clear that you have so much experience and know how. I've really enjoyed MANY a one minute vacation. GREG P.S. Is Dex Otaku OK?
  21. So, suffice it to say, I should get a preamp? It seems like a preamp can function like a battery box when one wants it too. Then, what I'm looking for is people's SPECIFIC experiences with their preamps. Any suggestions, recommendations or warnings would be appreciated. Thanks. BTW, seems more like a $200 investment from my POV. So I want to make a choice I can live with.
  22. So, just out of curiousity what other groups/forums/message boards/etc... do you belong to? Me? Just this one currently: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/endlesscalling/ Maybe this thread will turn somebody on to somethin cool they didn't know exists.... Merry Holidays and Happy Playback, GREG
  23. I wholeheartedly second that!! GREG
  24. WOW!!! The quiet american site is AWESOME!! Aaron, you've inspired to record more things and more often. All MD users should check this site out! Sorry kurisu, I know I'm off topic here, but kudos to you too for maintaining such a cool, informative and well kept site in these MD forums. I'm addicted to this place!! Anyone ever tried recording fireworks? That's somewhere between crickets and rock concerts, no?

    Help w/static

What about those little black barrel shaped doo-dads they send with the unit? Are those supposed to manage static?
