  1. Why would you listen to music you don't like? Personally the fact I like a song more, would make a low bitrate even more irritating.
  2. Any tests I tired, I could but only on specific CD's that are qood quality and certain types of music. Like an unplugged session or classic stuff. Some old rock stuff I couldn't tell a difference.
  3. I think most people try to ignore it in disgust at the cynical way it was implemented on HIMD.
  4. In fainess some people think 64kps is ok
  5. You need another poll now for SP vs 352kps.
  6. I use my HiMD to record. But I then transfer/convert the tracks to my MP3 player to play them. Sometimes I use the HiMD as a player, and its sounds great. Its just as a player, the MP3 player is a lot easier. If I had to record, and couldn't afford a seperate MP3 player. I'd be happy just having the HiMD.
  7. Very interested mate. I assume this is the UK model that has Analogue-in / Digital-in but no mic-in? I'll PM you some questions.
  8. Just a thought... I'd assume it only works if you have a disk in it, that formated in one of the HiMD formats. Probably a standard MD with SP wouldn't work. Or perhaps your mac USB ports aren't supplying enough power.
  9. Still no stats ah well... Over here the iPod Shuffle (1GB) is sold out as many sites report, the fact it never dropped in price is an indication that its selling ok. Most expect a new model soon. Most people use WMP, and have existing MP3 collections before they buy a player they don't use the software. Unless they have to... Assuming that iRiver ownership = OGG usage is quite a leap. Here the big sellers are iPods and Cowons. Lack of updates and the bulk of the iRiver units put a lot of people off. Though Rockbox has caused an upsurge or interest. Mainly in the H1xx series though. The creative flash units and the nano are the big sellers. No particular pattern to the size of people hands and the players they buy. High proportion of lefties buy iPods though. Dunno what you are doing. I can encode a DivX in that time or rebuild an exchange server
  10. I doubt that the masses are using OGG. Any stats? Sonys SB whats that? SS 3.x is pretty slow. Transfers to HiMD take an age. No idea, no ones posted any stats on those US sales... I agree about home recording though. My main use for HiMD too. Aswell as recording my old cassettes.
  11. Unless you've a very slow machine and are encoding in very high bitrates whoch most people don't then I don't see how it takes so long to encode from CD's. I don't have that many CD's maybe 150 or so and I can do most of them in single morning using 256kps or equivalent. The problem I have is managing the tags etc. Pain in the butt especially when they get tagged incorrectly so often. For example, in my experience, iTunes has a habit of tagging different CD's from the same CD disk set with different genres. Seems very odd.
  12. ...and fails Since you can use the USB or Analog.
  13. Please do I'd love one Speaking of controls...... to be honest I prefer the scroll wheel on the 1st gen units. The controls on all my MD units, Sharp/Sony are all pretty funky. Certainly there was no (or no decent) ergonomist involved in their design. I'm not that big a fan of the iPod controls as you can't use it without looking at. When you've come from old walkman, Cassette, MD and CD units (even the MP3 units) that you can operate by not looking at them. The current batch of portable players seem a dis-improvement. The non LCD remote that came with my NH700 is a joke. The one on the G750 I have is terrible aswell.
  14. Thats meaningless unless you know what bitrate, encoder and encoder settings you are using. That makes a world of a difference.
  15. Why don't you just buy BIGGER stuff then? Griping/posting as if stating facts, and not backing it up with some actual FACTS is flame bait IMO.
  16. These flame bait threads are so funny. I love it... "units are just TOO small" I can see the backlash now. http://www.pocketcalculatorshow.com/boombox/golden12.html Poor Apple http://www.google.ie/search?client=firefox...G=Google+Search
  17. The check in and out of the library seems to be left over from earlier versions. However the DRM limitations and the awkwardness of proprietary music transfers is a major disadvantage to the Sony MP3 players.
  18. I think I can hear a difference. However HiSP is just much easier to use. In comparision to my Zen Micro or iPod Shuffle or Panasonic PCDP at 256/320 kps the HiMD at 256/352 sounds pretty much the same. If pushed I would say the Shuffle is best then Zen, then HiMD then PCDP. Not much in it though. However I suspect its as much to do with the EQ (I usually have it off) and how each device drives the earphones you're using. I'm using Mx500 ear buds which are pretty lowfi really.
  19. I'm confused. Are you basing this on any facts? If so could you post the links? or is it just your own opinion?
  20. Your req... 1) Music Archiving 2) Data Transport 3) Fast tansfers For most people, there simply cheaper and faster and more convenient ways of doing what you're asking. Sweeping generalisation I know but I'm assuming that most users do not all transfer only small amounts of data. Since any transfer of more than a couple of megs takes an age, the difference compression makes will be insufficient for most people. Thats my opinion, having tried it. If your afraid of differing views on the web, best not to post.
  21. I suppose if its gonna take you 5-10mins uncompressing a few mb's isn't significant. Uncompressing 500mb has to increase the time. Anyway enough of this daft thread
  22. And it takes time to compress and uncompress the data.
  23. It appears as a disk drive on a Mac and a PC so you can copy data from both to it. Personaly when I'm dashing out the door I couldn't wait the 10mins or so it takes data to copy to a MD. If I miss my traffic window by 5-10mins it can add 30-40mins to my commute. Used to drive me crazy when I used CD's for transport on the older 2x and 4x drives waiting for them. Now I just plug in my MP3 player copy my files in seconds, unplug and I'm gone. I have a encrypted section of the drive for data.
