Well for me recording, a HiMD has a better range of recording options. You have PCM and a massive recording endurance, if using HiSP or other bitrates on a 1GB disk. Nothing worse than running out of space when recording.
-
Well that sounds exactly like what happened to me. What I do now is record in bigger chunks, then combine them before converting them to WAV.

If weight, size and durability your primary goals. If thats the case a Flash Based MP3 player might be better.

Intriged and confused by it to behonest. A=Lossless and Bx=Lossy where x=bitrate(64/132/etc) A and Bx stay on the HD. Only Bx is transferred to the portable device. A+B(64) then B(64) transferred to portable. Transfer is quicker because B(64) isn't actually re-ripped when transferring. However if you pick a different bitrate say B(132) then A+B(64) user picks 132kps for transfer SS transcodes B(64) to B(132) which destroys the sound quality. To be honest it sounds like a bug that got through testing. Obviously it should actually encode A to B(132). Still its not a total loss. We now have a higher bitrate for playback 352kbps, which is great if you use HiMD as a player. Personally I don't, but I will be interested in seeing how this 352kbps compares with other MP3 players I have. We already have lossless with PCM. So all that this update does is give us a new bitrate and speed up the transfer speed. Is speed of transfer really an issue for people? I pretty much do the same as 'The Low Volta'. Big external disk, and I don't use SS except to transfer to and from the HIMD. I also would like to record analog in 352kbps. Still its nice to see any development of the technology. Theres still potential in Atrac if they can give us ATRAC, Lossless and a wider range of bitrates and portables that have gapless playback.

HiMD has more features, more capacity, better unti all round, but is more expensive, and subjectively not as well made. NH1 being the exception.

I had some odd results that sound a bit similar to your problem. I don't think I had repeated recordings, but I used to think it had jumbled the order of the segments. But I'm not a 100% certain as I couldn't figure out exactly what it had done. However I changed the time stamp setting, and also upgraded to 3.2 and that fixed the problem for me. This was on a MH700 though. haven't had a problem since.

I find it confusing too. But then Sony never seem to make logical moves do they.

I use 2300 & 2100mAh Ni-MH with my MH700. I haven't done a test but I didn't think battery life was that bad. -

Since by using the 40ELK's you can't use the FM/AM tuner, I guess thats not a problem for you. What capacity battery are you using? I didn't use the supplied battery with my MH700. -

E888s are meant to be quite good, haven't heard them, but they are meant to be probably the best of the earbuds. I found the Sennheiser's MX500 decent and cheap. Cheap is important because earphones don't last that long. I like a cord down one side as its easier to manage. -
I know its not that on topic, but I prefer my Sennheiser MX500 buds to my Panasonic HJE50. The HJE50 are ok, I just don't find them that comfy.

Previous iPods only had mono recording which is why there hasn't been many add ons using it. With the new iPod its 44hz joint stereo so its a lot more useful. However its true the devil is in the detail when you are recording. You actually need all the features like setting the levels and track marking. Not that MD is perfect, but its the best of a bad lot.

I thought there was little, if any, difference myself. Maybe through a decent amp and speakers or earphones it would be more noticable.
-
With respect you don't know how to use it. The problem is your music is very bad quality. Probably the discman you have is more forgiving because its lower model. If you use high quality earphones and a good quality player you hear more problems with poor quality music than if you use a cheap player. Using PCM on a MD is the same as CD quality. However MP3's especially those from the internet are often very poor quality. If you make ATRAC files from the orignal CD's and listen to them on the MD you will find they sound very good indeed.

Ahhh that makes a lot more sense considering your previous posts. Just a thought. If you have to explain it by spelling it differently perhaps you should have spelt it PCMmaniac in the first place. Just out of curiosity, can you, in a portable scenerio, hear the difference between PCM/SP/HiSP? What earphones are you using etc. Personally I can hear a slight difference but only in a quiet enviroment.

Theres a certain irony about some called PCManiac who can't be bothered to fix their PC. Personally I don't have the patience for all that messing with real time. For me HiMD is the only way to do MD.

Going on this earlier post I reckon from the USA. How come its branded "SUN" ?

I can only talk about my own experience. I have a iPod Shuffle, and a Zen Micro. I prefer the sound of both to my MD/HIMD units. The Shuffle is particularly good. If you are interested in some discussion on sound quality, I suggest having a browse through the Head-Fi Portable forum. Theres a lot of intelligent discussion on SQ there. So you just prefer to do things slowly. Fair enough. Personally I haven't had any issues with 3.2.

I thought they all had scroll wheels of some sort. Even the remote on the NH1 has one.

Me too. The screen is nice, but its an ugly unit otherwise, and it doesn't record. -

I tried it a couple of times and had no problems. I have the MH700 but I rarely use the inbuilt charger. I had a 4xAA charger already, and I just use that. Theres lots of discussions about NH1 vs NH900. If you do a search on these forums you'll find lots of info. In short the NH1 is better looking, but less practical than the NH900. For some it doesn't matter and they love the sexy NH1. Other like the more practicality of the NH900. For the specfic differences do the search. -

I'm in Ireland (230v 50mhz) I've a AUS MH700 and have the AUS AC charger (3V 1A - 240V 50hz 5W). The AUS pins are two thin flat pins angled at 45 deg. They kinda sit in on round base. Bit like a shaver two pin. I found an simple socket adapter (about €4) in a travel shop that seems to work fine. It even has round depression that fits the round base of the AUS adapter. However my old Sony G750 MD has a AC charger (3V 500mA - 230-240v 50hz 5W) and it seems to work fine aswell. So I use it. Probably charges the internal battery slower because of the difference in Amps. To be honest I don't know. However I mainly use my own rechargables or just standard AA's. When recording I usually use AC power. Haven't had any problems with it so far. If you need photos, let me know and email you some. Heres a handy table. http://kropla.com/electric2.htm some show the plugs. The AUS AC I have looks like this http://kropla.com/!i.htm without the center (earth?) pin. -
Well the point of a HDD is that all of your music is on there already. You only ever connect it to the PC to add new music. You just grab it and go. Assuming its charged. (if its not, you'll wish you had a AA based unit) Really the recent iPods are every bit as small as a MD and a few discs. Probably smaller. Flash players are considerably smaller with less capacity, but its the same as carrying a player only HIMD unit with one one disk with you. At some point you will want to change that MD so you'll return back to where your disks are and choose another. I reckon you just like the tactile quality of discs. But really theres no real advantage in having your music/data spread over a whole of discs rather than in one place. With a load of disc you are less likely to have a backup. But with all your music on a computer its much easier to have multiple backups. I can see why people like to remove a computer from the music process completely, since I work in IT and somedays I just don't want to look at one. But if you are using NetMD, HiMD, or DVDR or CDRW then you are going to use a computer anyway. Its just is common sense to use a computer to do it rather than spend days recording everthing manually. If you want to avoid a PC you probably are going to stick to Vinyl or CD, or MD (SP). I loved cassettes because I could make my own mixes. I love MD because it can record. Having loads of discs to manage its one feature I never liked. I think HiMD is great because now I need less disks. However each to their own.
