  1. The hard work is appreciated. Great to be able to get my fix of MD info!
  2. and a torch so you can see the screen at night...
  3. I've a set of the Panasonic HJE50. I find them decent but not amazing. I would say they lack a little bass aswell. I also find I can't get the right ear quite as good a fit as the left. Oddly I've heard this from other users on Head HiFi aswell. But they do the job in that I can listen to my music silently and they block out outside sounds a reasonable amount.
  4. I find MP3's at 192kps and higher on my Creative MP3 player sound as good as HiSP on my 1st gen HiMD, using the same earphones. A highly subjective test I know. But it works for me.
  5. The only reason I used LP2 was to put a double album on a MD. While NetMD & SS would have been a lot handier way of putting music on a MD, CD>>Optical>>SP sounded so good I didn't see the point of using LP2. For me SS>>HiSP sounds as good and the advantages and capacity of SS & HiSP are worth any minor difference between it and SP. Though if I had leagacy deck or car unit, I'd probably still be using SP aswell.
  6. I find that alot of CD's are poor quality. On such recordings, theres little difference between PCM, HiSP and LP2. But with a good CD the difference noticeable. Though on a portable device (for listening) the difference between PCM and HiSP is very little. I go asfar to say that PCM is really only appropriate for recording. However I definately hear a difference between LP2 and HiSP. I never liked LP2 though.
  7. The iPod Shuffle is a different product than a MD or even a regular iPod or HD player. To compare the two, or to make a value judgement is pointless, your simply not understanding what its intended use. Its like comparing a portable a 3 seater sofa with a fold up camping chair. Like others have posted I would consider a iPod Shuffle as a complementary device to a MD or iPod etc.
  8. Its a decent amp so its worth putting a decent signal through it.
  9. The older pundit system and SFF (Small Form Factor) PC's in general tend not to be that quiet as they are cramped internal and use small fans to cool. Some of them are quiet though. You'd need to shop around. http://www.hushtechnologies.net/ are well regarded but expensive. A64 have cool and quiet technologies, so would be better than a P4. But a mobile chip like a P4 M is much cooler. Celerons (is there a M version?) do not have power saving, so I'd be uncertain how cool (and thus quiet) they would be. The only thing a faster CPU give you would be faster encoding, ripping or processing of music. Especially in SS. It would also be a more responsive system when doing the other tasks such as photo editing. Which would be no fun at all, on a Celeron 300-500 mhz.... What AMP are you connecting to BTW?
  10. Even when mobiles are off they transmit a signal. Which is how they've managed to find "lost" people in the past. They can boost the base signals and triangulate to locate a mobile within 50m or so. To stop this you have to remove the battery.
  11. I have a MZNH700 that I was thinking of selling to fund a RH10. I got it cheap so I'd give you a good deal on it. PM me if you are interested.
  12. Dunno myself. Theres is some stuff in the manual about this though.
  13. Since the XP range beats the equivlent P4 Northwood in most tasks, and is usually cheaper, personally I always thought the XP range was pretty good. Really grabbed a decent chunk of the market for AMD from Intel anyway. So some people must like it. Intel system do tend more hassle free overall though. I would agree that for audio alone you don't need to upgrade. However if you want to upgrade I would go for a larger case with room for lots of drives and expansion. Its easier to keep a bigger case quiet and cool. Something along the lines of this, http://www.silentpcreview.com/article254-page1.html (Good site for info for keeping your PC quiet BTW) . If it has to more visually appealing then sliverstone are popular for HTPC and Audio systems. http://www.silverstonetek.com/product-case.htm. Again I would also go for a socket 939 A64 board and CPU. Any gfx card would do, but I would consider juggling the budget to get dual TFT screens. Dual monitors is a massive productivity boon over a single monitor. Dual Core CPU's are now on the market which are essentially two CPU's on one chip. They are eyewateringly expensive, but it means that when you multitask the machine won't slow down as much. Theres a good section on PC Audio systems over at the head-fi.org forums. http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=59 Though it is very Audiophile. Also consider a backup system. I use a couple of USB2 external Harddisks which I use to keep a copy of the HD in my PC. Any critical stuff I also backup up onto DVDRW. Personally even though I've been building my PC's for years, last time I picked up a cheap PC from the Dell outlet store, rather than build my own. I was short on time and money and sometime this is easier and more cost effective in the short term. Though in the long run one you build you're self is better as you will be able to upgrade it bit by bit.
  14. Great review. Really Appreciate it. I have a NH700 and was interested in the difference between it and the RH10. I also really like the scroll wheel on the NH700, but the hassle of having my music as MP3 and ATRAC files would make me consider upgrading to the RH10. I mainly use the MH700 for recording, as I have another MP3 player. I have no legacy stuff, so thats not an issue for me.

  16. FlameGrilled - I have no idea what point your trying your get across. Sorry.
  17. Breepee2 - I didn't realise the digital output was resampled, I thought it was only the analog. On doing a bit of reading about the web I see that how this can effect the sound. FlameGrilled - Yes there are non technical/audiophile users (probably the majority) who would be happy with a simple audio card. But its good know the difference between the cards isn't it.
  18. Well I'm confused....??? I thought that any digital output would be unaltered. Is that not the case? I also thought that the significant feature of the Chaintech AV-710 is that it has (for the price) great analog out via the Wolfson WM8728 DAC? I'd have assumed that a MD forum is pretty much a niche market so the mass market angle wouldn't really apply. The majority of people here would have some undertanding of the issues of audio quality, especially due to the interest in recording here.
  19. How would the AV-710 compare to my Sonic Fury card?
  20. A few people have said that. Why do you think that the decks sound better? Considering its probably SP which is 292kps.
  21. Whats so great about a MZ-N920?
  22. I've never heard of Victor before. Would this be in the same "audio" class as something like a denon bookshelf unit etc?
  23. Sound like a bug alright. Personally I don't convert my files when transferring them, I try to avoid trancoding as much as possible. If I have a MP3 copy of an album thay I want on my MD, I rerip it from the CD to ATRAC for the HiMD.
  24. I'm not disputing that ATRAC sounds better than MP3, thats very subjective. I might even agree with it myself. But that a ATRAC from a MP3 sounds better than the original MP3. A MP3 ripped from a CD should sound better, than a ATRAC ripped from that MP3. Since you've compressed the original recording twice. However its generally agreed that on the 2nd gen units Mp3 sound has been tweaked (for no good reason, other than Sony marketing) to sound worse than ATRAC files. So that would explain what you are hearing. But its pretty poor if the MP3 playback is so degraded that a ATRAC file encoded from a MP3 sounds better than the original MP3. Again its all subjective, and if you can't hear it then forget about it. But you should really do your ears a favour and rip directly to ATRAC from the original CD. It sounds a lot, lot better.
