indeed... but do not get a model with 'D' in the name, as it is a downloader only and won't record at all... and there are two generations of HiMD so there's a bit more to it - first part yes, you can use the old discs and reformatted as HiMD, they can hold considerably larger amounts of data/music - but for part two the generations are important: o first gen HiMD can record in the older formats directly but these recordings can not be uploaded to PC through USB! (besides none of these models has a backlight on the recorder) o second gen HiMD can not record in the old formats remember using SonicStage you can create discs that will play on your older equipment with both generations so my advice would be: forget about recording in the old formats, use HiSP/PCM, upload to PC, convert to wav, do all your editing, reimport to SS or burn to CD and import through SimpleBurner... it actually is easier than this looks yep, for portable players/recorders = Sony only... according to your preferences, I would advise the RH10 as it has the OLED (a beautifully lit display) and the N-Am version falls within your budget (I believe)... just search these forums a bit, there are a lot of nice reviews of this machine like this one, this one or this one hope this helps

I was just wondering... did you label eggos as over the head portable or hifi (I have actually never seen them in real life so I do not know how big they are...so sorry if this is a stupid question) if eggos are portable... I'm wondering who the hifi ppl are, I used to walk around with my Senn 497's but I got a lot of strange looks and they are open type so almost the entire train was 'enjoying' my musical choices so I quit using them outdoors

welcome to MDCF s6arizona, I'm sorry, but realtime transfer is the only possibility with that type of recordings... - only HiMD-format recordings (i.e. HiLP, HiSP or PCM) can be uploaded through USB. The USB on NetMD'w (like your player) is one way PC->MD only. - old type recordings (LP, SP) will not be transferred faster than realtime, not even with a HiMD machine just check out this thread for a more complete description so if you want the uploading ability real bad: check the minidisc.org equipment browser for a HiMD model and remember... you should record with this machine in the HiMD mode or the recordings still won't be uploadable
-
I must admit that I didn't even check the specs, as for that price and with such dimensions... I don't think it will be replacing HiMD pretty soon
-
you could also experiment with a separartor between the mics, like a jecklin disk or a fake head etc... just like greenmachine did
-
it actually has one major advantage over all other remotes: you can check the rec levels in the dark (and with the NH900 you can even set the backlight to stay on)... but I am just looking for a second hand RM-MC40ELK which wouldn't cost too much, as I will only really be using it for recording (for listening I prefer a light remote like the one that came with the NH900 I guess) and if I can't find one, I'll have to learn to work with the NH900 and a little flashlight (or save up for a model with OLED someday...) but still, if anyone out there has one that isn't used (haha fat chance I know )... just PM me
-
as I'm starting of as a concert taper I'm looking for the ultimate recording utility: the RM-MC40ELK if anyone has (a perfectly working ) one for spare... just let me know (I can pay by paypall)
-
indeed, SB is very simple and easy... I use it all the time... but it needs SS to be installed to work (and perhaps even a high enough version, so upgrading to SS3.2 would be a good idea anyhow)

nope, I just read all threads and I regularly check the score and also whether someone's celebrating his/her birthday... as I nag enough around here, I think it's also necessary for me to be a bit friendly/positive from time to time -
I have mixed feelings about them... but I will set up a poll, as I'm actually curious about peferences (also as to which style of headphones ppl prefer) just vote on poll part 1 and poll part 2
-
well, I was just wondering two things about headphone behaviour: - what type of phones do you all prefer (= this poll) - what cordstyle do you prefer with 'buds and in ear-style 'phones (= part 2 of the poll) my opinion... I'm the proud owner of: - sennheiser HD497 (over the head/hifi) - senn MX350/sennMX450 (earbuds) - panasonic RP-JE50 (in ear) and for comfort I'd prefer the sennHD497's, but not for portable use, when the pana's really shine (although I do not really like the amplification of your 'own' noises, like footsteps, with the in ear type...), buds are comfortable, but let too much noise in and to much music out as far as I'm concerned... so my vote would be for the in ear type
-
well, I was just wondering two things about headphone behaviour: - what type of phones do you all prefer (= part 1 of the poll) - what cordstyle do you prefer with 'buds and in ear-style 'phones (= this poll) my opinion... I'm the proud owner of: - senn MX350 (buds) neckstrap and +/- long cord (1m) - sennMX450 (buds) symmetric and +/- long cord (1m) - panasonic RP-JE50 (in ear) neckstrap and short cord (with extension but never used it) I actually had a hard time deciding... I like the symm/long cord combo and the asymm/short cord (but I've got no love at all for the asymm long cord, as any pull on the cord simply jerks the left bud out of my ear) but after long consideration I would have to choose for the symm/long cord type, as I like to wear a small MD-pouch with the remote clipped to at waistheight, as I've always had trouble clipping the remote at a decent spot with short cords

no probs, we're all here to help most problems have been with the installation of SS itself, not installing properly the first (ten) time(s)... but, you won't know if it works for you unless you try it I'm afraid (I personally have upgraded from SS2.0->3.2 with every step inbetween and never suffered any problem at all)... if you want to be sure, just read and follow the instructions from this thread ... and a couple of quick reminders... do a clean install if you can (see the thread above), make sure you do not have FFDshow (run a search for it if you do know what it is) installed and also some other codec packs (kazaa lite and others), you could always install the Sony personal audio drivers (see downloads) before you install SS3.2 (shouldn't be necessary though), make sure your PC meets the installation requirements,... well, as far as HDD-backups are concerned, I haven't actually heard about SS-install ever ruining anything else than the music library, but actually you should backup all vital stuff before installing anything as accidents can always happen... as far as the music library is concerned that is more difficult to answer... I'll need some more info: what program are you using at the moment? have you got an extensive music library? do you want to keep it or don't you mind reripping all CD's in there? the Sony music format (omg/oma or in more understandable terms atrac) is copy protected, so if you simply backup the library, SS perhaps will not recognize them as they came from 'another' PC/program so if you want to keep them, you should run somesort of Sony music backup tool (like the SS backup tool in the SS folder)... so just check what you're using now and if it has some sort of backup function (perhaps separate in the same folder as the program) and more importantly... whether you want to keep the library (as things get much simpler if you don't really care about losing it )

I recorded a test with batt box->mic in and ac-adapter plugged in standing amidst a bunch of PC's (3 laptops), tv-cable, a TV, two wall sockets and a lot of electric cabling... the low hum was more like a huge buzzz... I could hardly hear what I actually recorded (to show how daft I actually can be... no this wasn't a test for the above... I just couldn't wait till my NH900 was charged to run the first test of the mics and batt-box I got from greenmachine (big thank you again g!!)... and that socket was the only one available at the time Luckily I immediately realized that it was my own mistake and the circumstances ruined the recording, not the mics )

all MD's can transfer recordings from MD-> PC, only the method differs between pre-HiMD (including netMD) and HiMD: Pre-HiMD: realtime transfer only - analogue = headphone out (MD) -> mic/line in on PC - digital = MD-deck with optical out -> optical in (on PC or HiMD) HiMD: realtime - same as above - connect to PC with usb, play tracks in SS and record with Totalrecorder (= totally digital) or Audacity (= with d/a and a/d conversion inbetween) faster than realtime (the part where HiMD really shines!) - connect through usb, open SS and press transfer and presto for more info and more complete explanations read this thread hope this helps

ahum... now that the admin is having a weldeserved chill at the beach, we've all missed 14,000! this place is boomin' -
welcome to the active/posting members-club joeyniji, a quick answer... theoretically all netMD's should work well with SS3.2 (the newest Sonicstage version) so it could be worth downloading that (from the downloads section here on MDCF)... but as you have lurked around here a bit, I guess you have seen the many SS problems, so make sure you back up all the necessary (also your music library through the Sony-way as a normal backup might not work!) before installing SS3.2 (not 'necessary' of course, but we wouldn't want to see your second post in a "I-upgraded-as-you-told-me-to-and-now-I-can't-listen-to-my-music-anymore"-thread ) have fun MD'ing and feel free to post more...

The Best Batteries To Use For Your Hi-MD
The Low Volta replied to Christopher's topic in Essential Hi-MD info/FAQ's.
nope, you've been confronted with the one and only but oh so big flaw in the NH1...the one which made me not buy it and even recommend against it to others:proprietary parts - the battery of the NH1 is a Sony only batt, which is only used in one (or maybe two) other machines, so they are very 'rare' and Sony can sell them as expensive as they think they need but that's not all... - the USB connection is Sony only as well, so no standard cable for the NH1... lose the usb-cable and it's a lot of money -> Sony - the charging cradle is actually needed for the machine to charge...so break it, lose it or just require some more flexibility... more money -> Sony - the NH1 actually needs all the functions from the RM-MC40ELK remote (while all the other HiMD-models will benefit from the remote and certainly from the RM-MC40ELK, but will function without it) so lose it or bust it... again a lot of money -> Sony so the NH1's superior looks come at a price I for one am not willing to pay... but I'm drifting off topic so if you already have got one, the battery should last quite some years if you treat it right (just read up at the "battery university") -
thanks all, quick update: - have not yet got any job proposals in sight, but I'd like to continue with academic research and there might just be a slight chance it will happen - but just to have a go at that long shot... I just gave away 2 months of leisure time and have just begun rewriting my thesis as a shortened academic paper - I will also be doing a student job transfering SP-recorded interviews to PC and transcripting them, but it is payed (by the uni) and it is for my girlfriend's PHD so I'm glad to help - I will still be going away for a week (to Southern France) at the end of August - ...and I will still be going for some nice shows with my new stealth set up (with many thanks to greenmachine for sending me some brilliant DIY stereo mics and a marvelous homecooked batt-box ) so I know what to do with my time but just to stay on topic (a bit ): it's goodbye 'free time'
-
just to avoid any problems later on... even with a HiMD and SS3.2 you won't be able to upload those recordings faster than realtime. Only recordings made in the HiMD formats (HiSP/HiLP) or PCM can be uploaded through USB you can always use the analogue (or even optical if you have a deck with optical out and PC with optical in) way of transfering the recordings to PC, but that's it...
-
I have the NH900 so a quick explanation: - the wheel actually spins (well, you spin it of course ) and is very easy to search songs and navigate menus on the recorder - the NH900 has a slightly recessed rec-slider... it is an elongated button (silver) with a red extra button protruding in the middle; you need to press down the red part while sliding the silver part, but as it is just one button you do this with one finger in a smooth gesture as I have never handled the RH910, I can't tell whether it's different, easier or harder to operate

how to do "folder in folder" with sonicstage?
The Low Volta replied to metooshelah's topic in Software
I do not believe that it is possible...but you can just group each album and select 'artist' playmode on the recorder, so it will play all groups by that artist -
as I also just answered to this (your post aswell) in another thread...USB2 would be useless, as it is the writing process itself that is slow (even slower than USB1.1)
-
USB2 wouldn't make any difference, HiMD doesn't even use the full capacity of USB1.1... it's not the transfer that is slow, it's the writing process itself
