I'd call it realism, but like I said, we'll know for sure (for the time being) later this year. That would be a cool feature, but (surprise surprise ) I'll be _very_ happy with FLAC-support
-
Also means we aint gonna see (much needed IMHO) improvement. The fact is that HiMD is almost 1,5 years old and still no decks... Don't count on it, at least you won't be disappointed.
-
You don't need to convince me, but some Sony execs... They're most likely dumping MD in september. and
-
At least we'll know where we stand at the end of this year.
-
Would be sheer reality. MD is just not considered market-proof to some high-up execs... If you havn't figured that out yet... It's sad, but true.
-
Agreed! FLAC must rule the world (and eventually even the MD!)
-
Interesting device. Could you test out if it supports WMA Lossless (if so, probably only version 9)?
-
Oops, sorry, your right. Link Yeps, and that says something about the codec, not the bitrate.
-
Just a glitch in the Matrix. Nothing to worry about. No, serious, somehow the buffer wasn't emptied and the unit played the contents back. A bug I think.
-
Atrac3Plus is better tuned for low bitrates (in order to compete in the market). Atrac 3 is better tuned for the original bitrate: SP. So the difference isn't in the extra bps, but in the codec. For high-end, good-ol SP is just better.

I think I agree with hair old. Sony seems to be crippling everything HiMD (no deck, bad software, bad codecs) in order to dump the format in the near-future. The excuse will be that the technology couldn't keep up with the competition, but Sony will no give up and go on with their MP3 lines. The MD-fanatics will have their explanation why MD ended and Sony will be making big bucks in the MP3-business. Everybody happy (in reality the MD-fans are screwed).
-
Maybe the format has to die, in order for it to be reborn into a format we want. Using the same discs, but better codecs, better software and better units (not the stripping down of top-end units Sony is doing now, but a more Apple-like approach). Hope Sharp will jump in on HiMD (or NextMD).

Yea, 100 mario games, 50 mario kart, and 45 yoshi games and 5 other stupid games. Thanks but no thanks. PS3 of Xbox360 for me (hack it and add a nice HDD and I'll have a nice home theater system).

Shit man, why not HiMD??????
-
Exactly. They're cunning marketeers... Thats good for you, but some of us thought we would be able to use a better lossy codec Atrac3+ 256k. Turns out we cant. Thats bad.

Where did you get the idea that it was? Everywhere the system requirements state the need for Windows. And btw, it does work. Through the Windows emulator Virtual PC. Install that, then Windows in it, than SS on that Windows, and you good to go. Goes real slow though.

No, no, no! 1. The roll off behaviour at 19kHz is consistent, NOT the rolloff starting at 2kHz!! 2. Somewhat... I doesn't need to be there at all. 3. You can't correct it with the EQ, which would make it intentional accoring to you? It just can't be coincidence, especially with Sony. If I buy a 2nd gen HiMD unit (for whatever reason, mine would be the ability to use a better lossy codec!) I expect it to work as it should. When I pay €250 I do not expect crippled playback! There's just no point here of excepting this 'reduced playback' from Sony. Why on Earth shouldn't I be mad about it? Where in the manual does it say that if I want real MP3 playback, I should go buy another device meant for that? That's just plain ignorance.
-
Rip them to FLAC (or WMA Lossless for SonicStage compatibility) to save 55% and have tags on your music. Too bad Sony has no lossless codec ala FLAC for the MD. Using pcm for recording is fine (is easy on its cpu), but for playback a lossless format would be very nice. With pcm you throw 45% away, for nothing.

kurisu, I agree with whole my hart
-
Rerip if possible.
-
Definitely the 900. Too bad it's 1.5 the price of the RH10 even.
-
sushi, so true... MD-units are still marketed with a backward 90-ies view of the DAP market...
-
MD -- SP only MDLP -- SP, LP2 and LP4 NetMD -- SP, LP2 and LP4 though USB

Well, I wasn't exactly replying to your post, just making my own view clear here. Nice to se someone agrees with me though And yes, I agree with you that DRM will never and never stop, or even slow down piracy. There's this Plextor Premium burning which can rip everything. There, all efforts of CD-copy-protections rendered useless. As you may or may not know, pirates (the big groups out there) always use CD's to rip to hi-quality MP3, something that I can't even buy at Connect or ITMS. Crappy 128kb'ish CBR music about as expensive as a CD (which are already not cheap). Who's using their MD to copy music anyway... With the HiMD's, you don't even can be stopped anymore, just put the MP3's in the data part and you're done. Nuff said I'm going to enjoy my FLAC's now

You got me one that one, maybe it's a bit of anti-MP3 seeping through from dev-unit to dev-unit
