  1. Without a low sensitive (line-) input and/or manual level control a battery module alone would be rather useless, unless the recorder doesn't provide a bias voltage ('plug-in-power'). The voltage of a battery module/box/pack doesn't enter the recorder's input at all, there are usually condersers to cut DC. Your best bet are propably low sensitive microphones and/or attenuation. If you attenuate microphones, they should be powered externally.
  2. I think a highly directional (mono) mic would be best to record sounds from great distances. Think of it like a tele lens in photography. If you're close enough, results can be more realistic with good omnidirectional ('binaural') microphones. The lack of a low sensitivity setting shouldn't be an issue when recording quiet sounds only.
  3. How about renaming it to 'limited time repair service' to avoid confusion if they don't offer a real warranty?
  4. Why do they call it warranty you have to pay for it? Is there something i'm missing here?
  5. Update: Minus one Sharp portable = three portables and one deck. I bought more than one on my search for the 'perfect' unit, which doesn't exist, but for me the NH700 comes closest at the moment. I don't sell the others because i like them and don't need the money - although i hardly use them anymore. I didn't like the Sharp, so it had to go.
  6. How about opening the player and see if you can fix/replace the jack?
  7. I like the ability to re-format standard MDs. I only have a handful of 1GB Hi-MDs and don't think i'll ever need more than that. I use them mainly for live recording in pcm, where <30 minutes on standard discs often aren't adequate. I don't use them for archiving. After uploading the disc will be erased and re-used.
  8. If you do it right and the items are as good and complete as described, you can at least double or triple that investment. If you wait too long, they might lose in value. Good luck.
  9. Recently this educational site about music acoustics has cought my attention: http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/music/
  10. I guess you mean MZ-NH600. There should be no issues using rechargeables. Am i right assuming that the NH600 lacks built-in charging functionality? In any case you're better off using an external charger since built-in chargers tend to charge higher-capacity rechargeables only partially.
  11. I wouldn't consider decoding itself a lossy process. Every compressed audio file has to be decompressed at one point or the other before you can use / listen to it. In this case it's just a rather uneffective way of transferring / storing. It's the lossy encoding (and / or analog transfer) where you loose quality.
  12. Don't forget the power consumption. I guess the DH-10P doesn't perform too impressively in that field.
  13. You can find the service manual here: http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sharp_MD-MT77+MT877.html Good luck.
  14. MZ-M10/0 are mac compatible, allow USB upload and can adjust levels on the fly. If you don't necessarily need mac compatibility, there's a larger variety.
  15. Please don't double post. People will have a hard time to decide in which thread to post. Other than that, welcome to these boards - i'm certain you'll get satisfactory answers if you specify your question(s) a bit. Converting between lossy formats indeed affects sound quality in a negative way. Try to use 1st gen encodings exclusively for best sound quality.
  16. There are also a handful of semi-pro flash recorders like Edirol or Microtrack but they seem not fully mature yet. Most Mp3-payer's recording functionality is considered more like a bonus then a serious quality function. They also mostly lack microphone inputs.
  17. I've tested it at 25/30. This is the maximum volume before the (non-hacked european model) limiter sets in as far as i know.

  19. Let your ears make the final decision. File size ratio is about 2:1.
  20. Non-mechanical media would be ideal for such rough conditions. A harddrive player might die even sooner if you tend to treat it carelessly.
  21. Seems like we have a few 'addicts' here, don't we? Thanks for the answers so far.
  22. Seems like we would have more recordists here than i would have expected. Thanks for the answers so far.
  23. Thanks for the answers so far. It seems like most of us are music and computer freaks and not too fond of tv, which seems quite contrary to the average folk.
  24. A combination of CD DAE and L.A.M.E. works very well for ripping and encoding CDs to mp3 for me. Only a few kilobytes in size and no nasty ad-/bloat-/spyware. Just pure functionality.
  25. I just hope she manages to fix her computer issues and will be back with us soon. Happy birthday Lisa (if this is the correct date).
