  2. Also avoid the MZ-NH710, which also has no mic-in.
  3. It's a consumer product that supports 44.1/16 only. However, because of the high quality ADC, quality is more than adequate and mainly limited by external gear (microphones, -placement).
  4. Most propably. Good luck with it.
  5. I don't understand the spanish description, but i guess it should work for electret mics. For dynamic mics, remove the left 10k resistor. For a stereo mic you'll need two of these circuits.
  6. It's not only that it does no plug-in power, but the line-in also offers no significant preamplification, which is needed to record quiet to medium sounds like speech with a microphone. Otherwise the recordings would turn out way too quiet, maybe barely recognizeable. You'd need either a powered and preamplified mic or an additional preamp in addition to an unpowered microphone, which can be quite expensive. The Nomad Jukebox wouldn't be much better - it doesn't do plug-in power either and has a rather low quality mic preamp (added gain via firmware upgrade).
  7. Every digitalized audio file is compressed/divided into bits, no matter how high the resolution. 44.1/16 pcm/wav is just uncompressed relative to CD resolution/bitrate, which itself is of course digitalized/compressed. It's all relative.
  8. High capacity batteries can handle high currents for a longer time. Two parallel low capacity batteries = one high capacity battery. Recording draws higher currents than playback does. The figures for the sidecar are propably measured with alkaline batteries, which have higher capacities than the internal NiMH, but can't handle high current loads -> recording time = shorter; playback time = longer. If you use a NiMH in the sidecar as well, it should last longer for both recording and playback. Alkalines are not ideal for high current drawing devices like (Hi-)MD.
  9. There's NetMD and HiMD. Both can download via USB connection from PC to Minidisc. HiMD can also upload realtime recordings, use 1GB discs and reformat standard MDs in a more efficient way and uses current codecs.
  10. Using a too high voltage will damage the mics and doesn't compensate for the lack of preamplification. I doubt the resulting recording would be even loud enough to clearly hear yourself - unless you're screaming into the mic maybe.
  11. There's also the NH700 and/or NHF800. The NH1 might be stylish but has too many expensive proprietary parts. Optical recordings can be uploaded but not converted directly by the default software - SonicStage. You'll need a third party freeware application called HiMDRenderer for this job.
  12. Ouch, this was the magnetic recording head. What happened to it? Did you drop the unit? You should see if you can get it repaired/replaced under warranty, there's no way to fix it by yourself. Don't put any more MDs into it, they might get irreversibly damaged.
  13. The discs are propably not blank, but the unit might be dying and needs to be repaired/replaced.
  14. I just did the same test with electret microphones similar to the BMC/TFB-2's. It made no difference if the mics were powered externally (via battery box) or not. The static / hum was still present in the recordings. Sony mics must have some kind of built-in noise reduction design, don't they?
  15. Am i the only one to get javascript error messages on each and every microphone madness page?
  16. Check out 'The Others' as well if you like movies which scare the crap out of you. I know i do.
  17. Not yet, but i'm definitely looking forward to see it soon.
  18. 'Vanilla Sky' and 'The Others'. I have a collection of maybe 10-20 favorite movies which i tend to watch over and over again. These are two of them.
  19. It might be the same problem as this user experienced: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showt...06&st=0&p=79637
  20. May i begin the discussion with an off-topic question: Why does the right channel of the TFB-2 recordings sound so dull? Is it caused by mic placement? I didn't know that you can avoid hum when using a powered mic in an AC powered recording by the way. Thanks for that.
  21. The nh700 also shuts off after pretty much exactly 2 hours, no matter if you charge the default 700mAh or a 2000+mAh battery. You need to force it to continue charging manually by pressing the stop key or use an external charger to be able to use the full battery capacity.
  22. Sounds like the (timed?) charger interrupts the process too soon and you don't get a full charge. The battery is propably ok. You can either manually force it to continue charging for pretty much exactly one more hour (but not more or you will overcharge it and the battery might irreversibly swell) or use a smarter external charger.
  23. http://www.head-fi.org/ You can put any mp3 onto cd in data mode.
