  1. There are lots of portable cd players - but recorders? I don't think so. You'll have to use your 'puter's burner to create cds. I agree that a well encoded mp3 can reach transparency at similar or lower bitrates than atrac, but usually needs some more decoding power -> shorter battery life.
  2. It's hard to find other portables with optical-in recording functionality. HiMD seems perfect for this job. Hi-SP sounds about as good as SP does, but saves you quite some space due to the reformatting of discs and a slightly lower bitrate.
  3. When you compare the sound quality of different devices, do you use the same headphones / HiFi ? I can't imagine any device with horrible sound quality as long as you don't use the stock or similar cheap phones.
  4. Very nice. The capacitors look somewhat large-ish, don't they? Be sure to loop the cable around the board before finishing it and be careful that no glue enters the jack.
  5. The lubricant on the transport spindle might have dried up and need to be refreshed. [attachmentid=1183]
  6. Sometimes good old tape has its advantages - no file system that can be corrupted or loosing the whole recording if the battery runs out of power during a recording session.
  7. Not only that it might refuse to combine, even if it works, you might run into troubles during upload. Here's a recently updated detailed guide for a gapless recording: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=10292
  8. In any case, be sure to keep a copy of the unedited original file. You might change your mind about post processing later. Where do you place the mics when recording?
  9. I didn't know you can separate the csbs from the battery box. Can you?
  10. Without external power supply / battery module, the attenuator reduces the already small enough bias voltage (plug in power) from the recorder's mic-in and thus the mic's dynamic range. High SPL handling abilities will be reduced, S/N decreases. All frequencies get equally attenuated, there's no roll-off effect. You're better off to continue using battery module -> line-in without any attenuation - the line input requires no further attenuation. The low frequency amount can be corrected precisely via software afterwards instead of having to use a fixed 6dB/oct filter/roll-off.
  11. Sooner or later the time will come to upgrade your headphones. Remember our words for your decision. Until then, there's propably not much you can do about it.
  12. True. It would be very hard to abx at 256 kbps anyway. I'm pretty satisfied with 1st gen encodings.
  13. You could upload the hardware encoded files to the 'puter and compare them there.
  14. A recorder without mdlp recording functionality can't play back such recordings either.
  15. I don't think this specific question is covered in the faq yet neither can i find tons of topics or any other detailed answer. The question remains.
  16. I've always disliked headphones that sit on (supra-aural) instead of around your ears (circum-aural). The latter type in combination with an open or semi-closed design helps for ventilation. Earpiece material and the amount of pressure are also decisive factors.
  17. Alkaline works, although a high capacity NiMH usually performs better (longer battery life because of better high/peak current handling, rechargeable) and thus is recommended.
  18. The wattage/amperage should be at least as high or higher than the NH1's default adapter Maybe someone who owns a NH1 could give details. Be careful with polarity.
  19. It wouldn't work since the NH1 requires a higher voltage (6V).
  20. It should never be significantly below 1.0V without load. Seems like it is defective for whatever reason.
  21. Charge it with your unit for the first time and avoid deep discharge in future (don't leave the battery in the unit with quickmode on if it doesn't get used for a few weeks).
  22. Thanks, i know about this site and would highly recommend it to anyone interested to get the best performance out of their batteries.
  23. A small keychain LED light should do suffice.
  24. This is correct - use SP for highest quality but lowest quantity - LP4 for highest quantity but lowest quality. LP2 for something in between.
