  1. I don't think this would be necessary - as soon as the charging icon disappears, the charging process should have come to an end. Overcharging more likely could happen if you charge your battery, discharge it only partially, recharge, discharge partially and so on. I don't think the internal charger would be smart enough to detect the exact shut-off point. Any precise infos about the charging method anyone?
  2. I need a dark skin - i'm photosensitive. Did that halloween skin need to be removed? If so, how about a substitute?
  3. http://www.minidisc.org/atrac3.zip (linked from http://www.minidisc.org/mdlpfaq.html#_q73) can handle Atrac3 with wav headers. For omg/oma playback the header would need to be replaced. It can't handle Atrac3+ files though.
  4. I tried again and - guess what - i can format it via windows explorer now - don't ask me why it didn't work previously though. If you format the disc via the unit and put audio files on it, it's not recognized by the car stereo. But if you do it via the explorer, it works. If formatted externally, the md might display something like 'format error disc - do you want to format?' - but this message can/should be ignored. Fat16/32 both work. I seem to get a short skip during the first seconds of a song if connected to the car stereo, but this could have various reasons and ain't too much of an annoyance. Overall the whole process seems some kind of unreliable, but mostly works if you know how. Personally i wouldn't continuously expose the himd to the rough conditions in a car though, it seems too valuable and fragile. Just my opinion.
  5. Unfortunately it doesn't work. The car stereo (Tevion something) recognizes both usb stick and mp3 player through the usb port (both fat and fat32 formatting), but not the nh700 in data mode. It supports mp3 cbr/vbr and wma cbr/vbr but neither windows pcm (wav) nor wma lossless. Considering the usual (lack of) sound quality in a car, lossless would be a waste anyway. I guess HiMD is not 100% mass storage compliant, you can't even format a disc using windows explorer.
  6. With good equipment, careful listening, a trained hearing and significant samples it shouldn't be impossible, though still pretty hard mostly.
  7. Ignore the specs and try before you buy if possible.
  8. Try to load them in sonicstage 3.2, remove the copyright tag and 'convert' to the same codec/bitrate. This should make them usable without actual conversion. Don't know for certain if it works, but it might be worth a try.
  9. Decode it to wav and feed sonicstage with that. After the process, delete the wavs. This site might help to find a decoder: http://www.rarewares.org/ogg.html
  10. I don't understand why someone would want to bother with the inconvenience of an external HiMD in data mode if these players accept both audio and mp3/wma data cds. A usb stick or sd card might be smooth to use though. My sister has one of these car stereos with usb input and sd card slot. I'll give it a try later.
  11. ... just curious. If none of the above appears worthwhile to you, what does?
  12. It's mainly the type of microphone and their placement that determines the resulting quality. All (Hi)MD units have reached a very high quality standard that can or cannot be limited by additional equipment. Focus your attention on external equipment and your recording technique.
  13. Modern chargers use a delta U detection instead of timers, which makes it compatible with various battery capacities. MD appears to be timed for low capacity batteries, correct me if i'm wrong.
  14. This is what i did. Highly recommend it to others.
  15. It's just an ordinary NiMH, so it should work. When I tried charging high capacity NiMHs in the unit it usually interrupted the process way too soon. I'd recommend an external (fast) charger to utilize the full capacity.

  17. I have tried various but have yet to find any decently sounding ones. As long as sound quality doesn't improve dramatically, i'll stay away. I agree with the portability advantage though. Maye a stupid question, but can these expensive 'Etynomics' compete with decent full-sized headphones?
  18. How many (Hi)MD units do you currently have? I started with a sony mds-je500 deck a few years ago (maybe 1999), meanwhile bought a sharp md-mt866 portable, sony mz-r700, mz-r909 and finally a mz-nh700, which i use mostly now. I didn't sell any of these yet. Bought all of them used. No defects yet.
  19. Some fanatics might disagree. Digital isn't perfect either but at 44.1/16 close enough for me. I wouldn't bother with an optical recording either but use pcm at least, especially if you plan to edit further. The internal ADC satisfies my sonic quality demands.
  20. 1.2 - 1.4 dB ain't too bad, you must've been lucky then - it could be much worse without proper matching.
  21. As long as the optical out of your soundcard is enabled, it should work without additional software. You can use the application of your choice for playback. Welcome to the world of mdcf.

  23. By experience i found that measuring the resistance of the caps unfortunately tells virtually nothing about their response. If you want to do it properly, you have to choose the less convenient way.
