  1. If i'm not mistaken, himdrenderer can convert directly to FLAC.
  2. Flash-players generally have significantly faster seek times than optical media like CD or MD - Harddisk should be somewhere in between. My Frontier Labs NEX IA does its job well, but i guess many other Flash-and HD players do as well.

  4. I wouldn't want to exchange my NH700 for any other current unit. You forgot the MZ-NH600 (without 'D') by the way.
  5. By the way, they seem to finally use brushless motors not only for the disc rotation mechanism, but also for the read/write transport mechanism, which is very good - it should last much longer. (I'm referring to a NH700)
  6. The MZ-R700 was one of the first units to use high RPM motors for power saving purposes and was pretty damn noisy, but i think they got that solved lately although they still use higher RPM than your MZ-R30 does. There should be no significant difference between an old and a new unit.
  7. Try the most simple solution first, use the headphone out of one of your portables at full volume, no EQ, connected to the soundcard's line-in. Take a listen if you're satisfied. If not, consider to save your money for a deck with digital out before spending money for a deck with analog out only. In any case, don't erase your discs until you have digital copies.
  8. There are special purpose 'intelligent' chargers with different charge / discharge / recovery modes for standard sizes, i don't know about gumstick chargers though. Volta's method should be equally good though. Backlight and high volume ain't necessary unless you're in a hurry - the lower the current drain, the more thoroughly it'll be discharged.

  10. You can aviod the memory effect if you completely discharge them (to about 1.0V/cell) before recharging, at least from time to time. You can even recover seemingly dead batteries with this method.
  11. Is the advantage in SQ of a digital amp real or just imaginary?
  12. It does, but you can also attach them to the post directly.
  13. An interesting idea, but it looks pretty hungry yet. Let's feed it.
  14. Why would someone want to buy more than 2 or 3? They are rechargeable if you didn't know.
  15. The great Taoist master Chuang Tzu once dreamt that he was a butterfly fluttering here and there. In the dream he had no awareness of his individuality as a person. He was only a butterfly. Suddenly, he awoke and found himself laying there, a person once again. But then he thought to himself, "Was I before a man who dreamt about being a butterfly, or am I now a butterfly who dreams about being a man?"
  16. The brightest light source won't illuminate your room satisfactory if you put it under your bed.
  17. Seems so, they appear to be rather rare and expensive though. For availability, ask dr. google for "TDK MDD140", "Sony MMD-140" and "Sony MMD-140A", they're about 12 U$ each. "MD-Data equipment uses a slightly different media than MD-Audio gear and in general the two classes of equipment have poor interoperability. The MD-Data and MD-Audio cartridges are shaped slightly differently, and the Read-only TOC information on the discs are different. The result is that Data MD equipment cannot generally write to Audio MDs, and vice versa. Some Data-MD equipment can play MD-Audio discs (via an audio-out jack on the unit), and the multi-track recorders (see the multitrack equipment table) can use MD-Audio discs in a diminished 2-track recording mode. 18. We'll call you 'The Dark Volta' from now on. I like your music.
  19. Max Roach / Anthony Braxton - One In Two - Two In One Max Roach, percussion, gongs, tuned cymbals; Anthony Braxton, alto, soprano and sopranino saxophones, clarinet, contrabass clarinet, flute 1. 20. Given the coloration effect of the pinna (outer ear), it's not necessarily desirable to have them in your ears if you plan to listen through anything else but small earphones. Those are unmodified capsules, the hi-sens max SPL is 'only' about 113 dB with batt box, loud rock concerts can exceed that level. The max SPL of 120 dB with a batt box of the low-sens should be sufficient, though the mod raises it to significantly above 130 dB, which would be sufficient in any case. Additionally, i wouldn't rely to 100% on the accuracy of Sound Pros (and others) specifications.
  21. Will this codec war ever end?
  22. Giant Squid offers the mod per request at no extra charge in their 'Omnidirectional Powered Stereo Microphone' set for 90 U$ including battery box. Visivox uses it in their 'SCM-PRO' for 55 U$ without battery box, but i think they've got one available per request. Core Sound sells them as 'Binaural microphone set' for 230 U$ including battery box. Sound Professionals doesn't seem to offer this mod, maybe per request, i don't know. Or alternatively, i could make you a similar set, but i guess it wouldn't be significantly cheaper than the Giant Squid / Visivox deal. Although the capsules themselves are very small, their housings are often not really miniature, so if you need it as small as possible be careful with your selection.
  23. I think it's hard to beat source follower modified omnidirectional miniature Panasonics - even for 300 U$ Audio Technicas or 1000 U$ DPAs, but that's only my opinion. Why does the 4060/4061 DPAs model name remind me of WM-60/61 Panasonics by the way?
  24. I usually put the battery box into my left trouser pocket, the MD into the right or vice versa. Couldn't be more comfortable.
