Yup noticed that too, even with the player turned off and unattached and the earphones in your ear, there is the hissing sound. I guess it is just the air pressure that causes the vibration of the cone?

I heard the hiss too when i first got it, and it is audible at very low volumes in a very quiet environment. I was very frustrated with it at first, then I listened to other players and realized that this is a characteristic of any player, there will always be some noise produced because of technical reasons. Once you realize this, it will stop bothering you, like it stopped bothering me .

Umm.. that's definitely not right . If it was me, I'd bring it back, but I don't know if they'd give you a discount since there is no way to prove that it was like that when you bought it.

Of course, remember that these comparisons are assuming that you have the original CD media. If you convert from MP3 to atrac3, you will be losing sound quality no matter what.

What is so damn special about WMA??? I don't understand why people are making such a big deal out of WMA.. it is not a widely used codec, and is not as good as atrac3... so who cares if it is supported or not? Just so it can be a gimmick spec?

Hm... I've installed connect player and played around with it, doesn't seem that special other than the fact that things seem a bit smoother. Also, it is suspiciously similar to itunes ...

I will try to install it and play with it, even though it doesn't support any devices yet. UPDATE: Doesn't work , it says target software module is not installed. Isn't there someone who can copy the installation from the cd and host it somewhere?

Are the NW-E4/5xx models USB 1.x? I thought they were just slow because of encryption by sonicstage.

Have you upgraded the firmware to 2.0? Maybe this might help if it is a bug with some revisions of the board...

I thought the new walkmans were really ugly the first time I saw pictures of them, but the look sort of grows on you, and they look cool indeed. They make the NW-HD5 look very plain, for example, when compared side to side.

I think the new Sony Connect software will be part of a new sony media suite that will connect network devices around the home like tv's, music devices, etc... This is the impression I got from a slide I saw on the forum somewhere.

For the NWE4/5xx there is no noticeable lag whatsoever. You just press play and it plays instantly, there is no lag at all when changing songs, which I did notice that there was with the ipod shuffle. It's always on so there is no "cold start", and you can only charge it through USB.

No worries, the only differences are a couple of new features in the software. Maybe they could just do a firmware update for the existing models to give that functionality...?

Yeah, that doesn't seem to hard, I am only interested in the lid and that is held by two screws. Would that void my warranty? The only risks I can think of is shorting it out, or cracking the glass. I can't think of a way that I could drain the charge completely... is there a way to do that? Or could I still open the lid without risk of a short circuit? Is there a material I could put around the edges of the clear cover to seal it for the future? EDIT: Oh no, I just noticed something! Hey, I've had my NW-E407 since august and I am very happy with its performance and looks. However, a couple of things are starting to annoy me: 1. Scratches/Fingerprints This is a very minor annoyance but I thought I should mention it anyway. There are microscratches all over the screen from normal daily use, which are invisible unless viewed under very bright light at a certain angle. This is not really a big deal, as all clear surfaces must experience this, especially things that are carried around a lot. 2. Dust/Sand/Etc. Under the Clear Material There seems to very very minimal openings in the area joining the glass to the play/stop/jog dial side of the device. Because of this, there is a very noticeable concentration of dust for about a 1cm distance from right underneath the up and down volume buttons, on the sides of the device. Also, there is dust coming in from the top side of the device, from the left side of the play button, but this is less dense than the dust on the sides. There are even a 5-6 specs of dust that have made their way onto the display area, and are blocking a couple of pixels! I am afraid that eventually this will start to be an eyesore when trying to read the display. So what can I do about this? If I contact Sony about it, it will take me a while to get a response. If finally they allow me to, and I send it to them for repairs it will take me a month or more to get the device back, and they might not even fix the problem, they might just clean the dust out and the problem could occur again later. For people who have had experience with Sony support, do they ever send new units? Judging from http://www.siliconpopculture.com/comments/121_0_1_5_C/ , sony support may either send me a refurb or fix the problem (would it be possible to fix?). Would I expect the refurb to be like new? Or would it contain microscratches, etc... that come from normal use of the device? Lastly, is anyone else experiencing these problems, and would there be a safe DIY solution to clean out dust, etc. without voiding the warranty? Thanks.

I don't think anyone really likes sonicstage, there have been quite a few threads on message boards complaining about it. Unfortunately, we'll never see any drag and drop functionality since the software encodes all files into a special format before it puts it onto your device so that you can't copy it on to any other computers. This is supposedly to prevent piracy... but it just pisses people off. Luckily, however, there is a new software that is coming out with the new model launched in the next month that will hopefully be compatible with the older models.

I'm using my verbatim lanyard . I like it because it has a clip on the end, right before the loop that is tied to the walkman, so I can easily clip it off to attach to usb when i need to. Only problem is that it sort of contrasts with the dark colour of the earphone cord.

I've been shopping around for earphones too, the standard sony ones just aren't good enough. I was considering the EX71 (same as EX51), and found them for $60 CDN shipping included on ebay. After I read the post by Damage, I found Panasonic HJE50's on ebay for $20USD + $10 Shipping! This almost seems too good to be true... how much better are the Panasonic's than the Sony's? Can anyone else back this up? Which one would be better for the nw-e4/5xx's?

Same here... what's been bugging ME is the amount of dust that has got in underneath the transparents plastic (specifically in the area right under the volume control buttons). I would screw off the plastic to clean the underneath if it didn't void my warranty.

Hey, I've been using ss3.2 for the past few weeks, and i recently decided that i should convert my files to atrac3plus when transferring to my nw-e407. When I go to settings in the transfer screen, i see the same bitrates that were there in ss3.1, nothing has changed. I've tried reinstalling several times with no luck. Should I first uninstall then install again? If so, will I lose the arrangement of songs and/or tags for albums and songs in my ss library? Thanks.
