  1. Well, as it's "all about the music" I voted for signature sound, though to be honest they all get me going to some extent. And a few more besides, though I can't be bothered to think of them the moment... Cheers
  2. 2-4 hours music (mostly on daily commute) Hardly watch TV at all, nothing regular apart from the news. I'm a computer programmer, so on average about 8 hours a day at PC
  3. I bought a 6V battery case for my NW-HD5 on ebay. It's obviously made up of shop-bought parts, buts that's OK as I dont really trust my soldering...
  4. I use Hi-MD at work for transferring files between our pool laptops at work (Windows 2000). And they sure haven't had any extra drivers/software installed...
  5. You can't increase the volume directly using Sonicstage or Simpleburner, though you could you Sonicstage 3.2 to burn a normalised CD-R or CD-RW and copy to MD from that. That's what I currently do, and it works fairly well. You can of course use 3rd party software like Audacity to normalise imported Wav files etc. before copying.. If you're using really good quality Sennheiser headphone (like HD600 or 650) they have very high impedence and aren't really suitable for unamped portable use. You could try using low impedence/high senstivity headphones or earphones, which should give you more loudness, or buy a portable amplifier, though you should be careful with your hearing in any case...
  6. I have quite a collection, it seems: Decks: MDS-JB980, MDS-S50, MXD-D40 Micro system: CMT-M333NT unit Portables: Sony MZ-N707, R909, N1, N910 NHF800, NH900, NH600, RH10, RH910 Sharp IM-DR420 That makes 14 in all... (quite a few others that have been passed on or died)...
  7. Playback, mostly of my old legacy MD collection. Some recording, mostly of my own music practice, and quite a bit of PC data transfer/storage between home and work.
  8. What's your problem with doing the hack, exactly? I just bought a 20GB HD5 this week, and the hack worked like a dream. It must have a been a recent model as firmware version 1.2 was already installed... Admittedly I've done lots of minidisc hacks in my time, so I'm used to the process..
  9. In general , please do not use UPPERCASE for all your text as this is considered (by some) to be shouting and/or rude, and is, moreover, extremely hard to read.. Please use sentence case, as if you were writing a letter, as in this fine example...
  10. OK, it's already done, but ditto for the RH910... God, though it sounds rough at that resolution (not just on the RH910), I couldnt listen to that for long, even if it is only speech..
  11. 32 to go now... I hadn't realised it, but we have nearly twice the membership of the... ahem.. 'other' forum.. and that's not even a specialist MD forum any more. Interesting...
  12. I'm not sure about that, though I don't see why not. If you have a small mono file I'd be happy to try it out later on (unless someone else can answer that)...
  13. The european RH910 comes with a white non-LCD remote control, which is nice, if you like that sort of thing... The RH910 can be hacked to give the full 5mW x 2 output, and indeed should be. I use 16ohm earbuds and dont have a problem with levels.
  14. I'd pick up either an MZ-NH900, or maybe an MZ-RH10. Neither has a proper backlight, but the NH900 can use a backlit remote and the RH10 has the famous OLED flourescent screen. The RH910 is also a solid contender as a basic recorder. All 3 have 3.5mm mic input and can use an external AA battery pack which is obviously useful in a live recording situation..
  15. Halloween's the 31st of October. I changed back to the standard screen, though the halloween motif was fun for a while...
  16. The Stranglers - Live Compilation on 1GB disc @ 256kbps: Live at Hope and Anchor 1977 Live X-Certs Access All Areas All Live and All of the Night Euro Live - Poland 2000 JJ Burnel - Hemel Hempstead 1978 Hugh Cornwell - Mayday
  17. Thnaks for that. I find the screen protectors peel off too easily, so nowadays I just cut out a small rectangle for the screen. The rest of the face isn't too badly scratched (yet), as the RH10 is mostly cased up, so hopefully that'll be enough to keep it in good condition...
  18. Unfortunately the battery case is of a totally different design for the RH10 and the NH900. I have both and have tried it. Probably to do with the realignment of the RH10's input/output jacks, but no, the battery packs can't be interchanged between the NH900 and the RH10. The AC adapter is exactly the same for the two units, however (3V @1A) with the same size DC jack and polarity.
  19. I'd vote for the MX550 (if there was a poll) - I just love the crisp clean sound from them, and the volume control is a handy bonus. The diameter of these is actually smaller then the previous generation (MX500), so there shouldnt be any problems with comfort. Having said that, I'm giving my EX71SL a workout right now, and they're doing very nicely thank you. So, maybe if your budget extends to it, go for the EX81 as well. It's always good to have a variety of headphone options at your disposal..
  20. Congratulations MDCF. With such a huge support base, long live MD!
  21. Thanks Kyle. How easy is this mod? Could we possibly have some pictures, please? This is a major development, as the NH1 was always at a huge disadvantage for external powering. It may even persuade me to pick up an NH1 cheap (while I still can), if I can find an N10 case..
  22. Just to point out, the RH710 doesnt have a microphone input. You'd need to use a powered mic through line in for ambient recording, which might not be the best thing as its entails extra expense/bulk. The RH10 or RH910, or the older NH900 would seem to be the best choices if you opt for Hi-MD. They can all use a gumstick/external AA combination which may prove advantageous in the long run..
  23. Most seem to prefer to PX100, though my choice is PX200, although I also have the PX100. The latter leak too much sound for me. In a quiet environment they seem quite similar sounding, however you may have to adjust the positioning on your ears carefully on the PX200 to get the best seal and avoid that 'hollow' effect. Neither the PX100 or 200 are naturally bass oriented, but they do respond well to EQ'ing. I find they (particularly the PX200) excel at accoustic/classical/jazz, as they do well in the upper and mid range, but I use them for everything. They (PX200) are the only headphones I use now in portable mode...
  24. Yes, thanks for the pics blueraja. Seems like the rH10 is actually tougher than a lot of us thought at first. I've pretty much kept it under wraps since I bought it 3 or 4 months months back, for fear of spoiling that lovely shiny finish. I feel more confident now about talking it out and about a bit more now...
