  1. Hi there! My upload speeds for PCM are constantly only 2x realtime, and the recordings are usually one continuous track per disk. What can be the problem?
  2. Do you think GP 1450mAh $6 gumsticks are "fake"? Aren't they safe to charge in recorder? I mean - if I agree to use only 900mAh of their capacity
  3. Thank you! This is great for a half-inch size on paper I guess vector graphics is same top secret at Sony as omg encryption... I already have some other logos: Minidisc, CD... Now for a complete collection a correct DAT logo is needed. I found a few gifs/jpegs (no vectors as usual), but they all seem to have the lower line in different fonts: The latter is bigger (better for printing) while the former looks more like on real tapes etc...
  4. OK, how about printable size image?
  5. Hi! Could you please help find the graphics file for "Hi-MD Audio" logo?
  6. Well, may be sometime possibly I'll manage to invent a need in some application requiring AA's, then I'll shell out for a fancy charger etc... In the meantime I'm almost decided to go for the $6 prismatic spare Thanks for your input!
  7. You know, they really seem to be bridged... I was surprised after looking in the RH910 service manual. OK, now here's the dilemma: extra prismatic or AA rechargeable? What it comes down to: Prismatic Panasonic (Japan) 1400 mAh - $14 Prismatic GP (China) 1450 mAh - $6 Prismatic charger, however inconvenient, is already available for free (inside the recorder) AA Panasonic (China) 2100 mAh - $3 AA Panasonic (China) 2400 mAh - $4 AA charger is $8 cheapest, minimum 2xAA charging, which is very inconvenient, to $50 (more decent, allows single AA charging with auto-off etc) Which way would you go assuming there's 1 (on average) long (slightly longer than the standard battery life) recording on batteries per week?
  8. The question is, are the two batteries bridged in parallel indeed? I thought it wouldn't be very wise to bridge different batteries (an alkaline & a rechargeable) even with great internal resistance. So may be some sort of insulating circuitry is still employed in MD devices?
  9. I can send you capsules which are almost 20Hz-20kHz - they have some 6dB roll-off @ 18-20 kHz, which is easily corrected in software applying this graph: [attachmentid=1585] Here are some recordings made with these capsules: http://www.stereo.org.ua/Events/Jazz/ednist-2006 (note: the 50 Hz hum you can notice on this festival recordings was really in the audio system of the venue) Pricing: $2 apiece. $1.5 if you buy 10 or more, $5 shipping (from Ukraine) Official name for the capsules: KPCM-6B
  10. Beware of mobile phones! I always ask my neighbours on concerts to turn off their phones COMPLETELY, not just the ringer So, does anybody know for sure if mic cable shielding can help protect from mobiles? If so, where do you connect the shield? Do you leave it unconnected to recorder and mics?
  11. I'm not so sure they're better - how am I gonna sell them when nobody heard of them here? lol Besides I already posted an ad with the old image http://www.stereo.org.ua/News/Latest/himd-sale (gonna import and make a little business, blanks are $12 locally)
  12. Automatic Gain Control In fact I found it absolutely satisfactory for recording spoken material (sermons) - especially when it is not convenient to sit near the recorder and watch levels. However I've only used AGC with clean feeds from mixing console. With noisier "binaural" mics I still always use manual level control - I believe constant noise is more suitable for reduction
  13. Why not? I mean if you don't mind recording with AGC... After all, display is unused when machine is connected to PC for up/down-loads anyway
  14. I see MD recorders quite often in our presscenter, mostly old models like Sharp's And this proves nothing. DAT is also widely regarded as a mandatory piece of gear in any decent studio, though it is manufactured no longer...
  15. Great initiative! Have you heard of a software filter (maybe a plugin for Audacity or SoundForge) to filter out clapping? It is very time-consuming to repair every clap manually
  16. So what's the point mentioning SS and Linux in one thread? Did these entities have any connection whatsoever? Will they?
  17. I also feel the buffer is like 8 MB. It gets flushed every some 15 sec when recording in PCM
  18. Ok, I'd buy one if Sony paid me 1) indemnification of $100 for being forced to use SonicStage for my own recordings 2) the price of extra battery In short, No more fooling around!
  19. Yeah... Converted 96 kbps 48 kHz MP3 movies into Hi-LP and the sound (speech!) of some actors is totally unrecognizable. I sometimes could confuse Morgan Freeman with Tim Robbins lol However it was pretty cool to have TWO feature films on a single 80 min MD with the half the MD still free
  20. Bad they've switched from English OK, waiting for the info on autotrackmarking... and 352 kbps on-unit recording too...
  21. I really thought it is -12 dB... Until I once got heavily clipped recording. Then I went through a trouble of precisely analizing the dB values of all the segments of my MZ-RH910, and they turned out to be like this (segments counting right-to-left starting at #0, the rightmost): 0: OVER <the right dot> 1: 0..-2 dB - Sometimes this is also slightly over, may be +1 dB 2: -2..-4 dB 3: -4..-6 dB <the left dot (middle hashmark) > 4: -6..-12 dB 5: -12..-20 dB 6: -20..-30 dB 7: -30..-40 dB 8: -40..-44 dB Bottom line: the middle hashmark on MZ-RH910 is -6 dBFS
  22. Has anybody actually observed the memory effect with the good quality Ni-MH batteries from Japan?
  23. I believe the main reason for MD non-popularity is that it is not a consumer format really, yet some assume it is. Consumers consume content (no surprise?) while MD is meant to produce content. It just happened to be mistakenly marketed as a consumer product in the past. Now this mistake has been fixed - we see no such marketing.

    710 vs. 910 ?

Sure Sony's mic preamp (built-in that is) is worth the $50. Example mic recordings (Hi-SP) http://www.vhs.org.ua/Events/Jazz/winter-jazz-Dergunov Also I had opportunities to perform recordings in the same venue in two modes: from mixing console and from my own binaural mics and I often loved the letter more...
  25. I see what you mean, but for e.g. the mic phantom power somehow manages to be around 2.3 V while the battery is 1.2 V. However, mics might use less energy compared to line-in, I don't know...
