Hi guys, it's been a while but I actually have a NW-A1200 with a broken HDD. I opened it up and I came up with the same Idea. The device starts up now and recognizes the flashcard (I was able to let it initialize it on its own) but when I connect to sonicstage it says ''System error No. 032'' and hangs itself. So If any-one has suggestions, I'll be happy to try them out. greetz!

May I ask if you have any experience with UE Super.fi 5 pro? I'm thinking of pruchasing a pair to upgrade from my V-moda Vibes. I'm gonna use them with my Touch and my new MZ-RH1. greetz

I live in the Netherlands and my ipod touch was capped! I had to remove it. You'll have to edit a .plist file after you jailbreaked your ipod. You'll get significant more output power when you remove the cap! greetz

hi guys, as you see, I'm new here at MDCF. I'm coming from Atraclife. I was abscent for a while there due to a little MP3 player adventure (don't ask) and when I returned I noticed that they removed the MiniDisc section So here I am. I have returned to MiniDisc before it was too late. I've been a MD fanatic for years now. I've had an MZ-N707 and MZ-NH900. I sold my NH900 because it began to develop some bugs and bought a walkman (NW-A1200) instead. But after some other DAP's (NW-S703, NW-A808, Cowon D2/F2, Creative Zen V:M, iPod Touch :shame: )I went back to my roots and bought a brand new Sony MZ-RH1B. Now I notice how I love MD. It's the best sounding format in the world. And I've tried many I can assure you........ I love the MZ-RH1. I loved the sq on my NH900, but that was 2 years ago and with sony MDR-EX71's. Now I have the even better sounding RH1 with V-moda Vibes. And damn do my Vibes like the RH1!!!!! Great sounding combo (though I'm looking into Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 pro's) But for now, the RH1 rocks. Best sounding DAP I've ever owned!! greetz

Hello guys, as said, long time no see.... I've been away for a while.. posting along on some other forums and not using a sony walkman as primary Player for a while. I used a Cowon D2 and an iPod Touch in the time between.. But.. Now I'm back. I was reading about how sony would discontinue the MZ-RH1 and no new HI-MD device in sight.... maybe never :(. so Yesterday I ordered myself one of the last MZ-RH1's in the country here... I'm expecting it as I write. My question to you gusy is, since I could not find any other review of the MZ-RH1 besides that of MDfreak (www.mdcenter.nl), If you would like an in-depth review of my MZ-RH1 which should arrive any time now. I posted this thread in ''the lounge'' becuase I noticed that the MiniDisc area is gone. And I didn't want to discribe on yet another forum.... I'd rather do it for you guys. ....... So it looks like I'm back in the MiniDiscs again , and I'm very very happy with it! I missed those little plastic things... greetz

Hello, My NW-A1200 Hard drive died since my brother dropped the unit. Now I've put in a CF card and it boots again, only my PC won't recognize it. I think I need the files that are originally on a NW-A1200 or NW-A1000's HDD, so that I can put those on mine and try to get it going again.... I would never buy stereo equipment from sony. I work in a HiFi store and sony is just overrated by most people. The ES serie is really good, though it dus not stand up to other equipment from brands like Marantz, Denon and hell, even pioneer. The price difference isn't that big either. I think Marantz SR-4001 is one of the best value stereo Amps I know. It drives the Canton GLE-407's pretty good. And the SR-4001 only costs like 249 euros. take the CD-4001 with that and you have a good stereo set for 500 euros. There are a lot of people who come and ask me for the ES serie but often they walk away considering a marantz, denon or onkyo or actually walk away WITH one of those. Maybe I'm just spoiled, but I would never buy stereo equipment from sony. And then I mean in that line and price.... The midi sets from sony are really great fun.... also for the price. So it's pretty good stuff. But no sony Amps for me.... Only thing that would get me buying a sony CD player would be good'old Atrac greetz

I have both and have to say that ipod touch doesn't sound that bad. Sony wins, but not with such a huge margin.

MDR-EX71? I really loved those. But nowadays i am used to a bit more detailed iem's. I now have V-moda vibes and they are without a doubt the best phones i've ever owned. I also own a pair of Futuresonics FS-1 but they have less soundstage and a bit less detail I think. I'm really curious about thes sony phones because i'm not that impressed with sony phones anymore. Well, I've actually ditched sony with the purchase of my MacBook. I had an NW-A805 at the time (still own it) but was forced to get something else since I didn't want to install windows on my mac. It was the main reason I switched in the first place! I replaced my beloved (!) walkman with a Cowon D2. It was a very nifty little machine but in the end it just wasn't what I searched for. SQ was rather good but sometimes too neutral or straight forward. Some people call it analatycal, I thought It was just too damn ''sharp'' and screamy. Also the touch interface was annoying because of it's weakness and small size. So I was going for another search when Mister Steve Jobs himself announced the new iPod line-up. I thought it was f*cking boring as always, but at that time he was only just finished with the ipod classic. The iPod touch was another story. I thought it was very cool and clean looking. Touch interface on a 3'' screen and mae out of glass, I just couldn't resist and with that little voice in my head saying ''It's an ipod you fool!!!, It's an ipod you freakin' fool!!! THINK!'' I still went to order one. When I got it I was very pleased by the design and everything. This is a totally different story. It's no regular ipod. This thing is very nice to have. Touch interface is sexy and the way you can search your music is like a dream. I have to say that SQ is actually very nice. It's clean, no hiss, nice low end and clean mid/upper range. Though it's no Walkman it's certainly very nice and for some kinds of music I actually prefer it to my Walkman. But I dooooo mis the decent walkman EQ a lot! The EQ of the ipod is a pain in the ass! It cracks like hell and they would be better of leaving it out. It's a shame! I could do a side by side comparison between the iPod touch sound and my newly purchased NWZ-S516. Just ask And yes, I eventually couldn't resist to the temptation of walkman. It works with my mac now, so it's asolutely great! greetz

No haven't tried that, and I don't bother to do so either... I don't buy a Mac to install windows on it anyway.... I think it's a shame.... But this just works. So I'm very happy!!! I'm very happy that I can say: Good Job Sony! I'm proud of you guys! Now just wait for the rest of the world to see how goo dthese players are now... with Drag&Drop!!! greetz

well, as some of you might know I have bought a MacBook a few months ago. My beloved NW-A805 walkman became unusable.......since sonicstage isn't mac compatible... so I bought an ipod touch, and yes... I have it a week now and it's already back with apple for repair. So today I as walking in the sunshine when I passed by Dixons. I thought It wold be fun to have a look inside and see what new stuff they have. And there it was... NWZ-S516.... walkman.... I immediately fell in love again.... I thought, nooo... you allready have an ipod.... it's coming back next week... So leave it alone. Finally I got home, and was surprised by a little plastic bag follwing me inside....I took a look inside and OOO NOOOOOO, it's a NWZ-S516!!!!! So I eventually couldn't resist (again) Hooked it up to my mac, and owww damn... it worked!!! A sony walkman with FULL drag & drop!!!! I just love it! I'm listening to it right now, it sounds the same as that absolutely great sounding NW-A808. I'm very very happy!!! Great work sony! You guys id a great job! Oww yeah, The Walkman just SHINES with My V-moda Vibes!!!! It's absolutely the BEST combo I've ever heard. I'm afraid my iPod Touch is going to lead a lonely life when it returns....... greetz

Well, I remember my NW-A1200... sounded pretty decent.... I suggest you'd take a look at the V-moda Vibes. Pretty good IEM's!!! If you want more bass and lower price, take the V-moda Bass freqs. Great earphones for the money! Much better then CX300!!!! And cost the same greetz

well guys, I've been reading this topic for a while now. I haven't been around here for a while. In the meantime I bought an iPod Touch. My Walkmen story had to end with the purchase of my MacBook. I still think it's a shame! But the you have to admit that the iPod touch is a very innovative device. It's nothing like the older and boring ipods anymore. It has great UI, nice video playback, good design.... it's an internet tablet and much more. So it's actually not fair to compare the touch to the ''regular'' ipods. They sucked BIG TIME!!! SQ whise........it's no Walkman... But it's not bad either.... The bass is nice and deep, the highs are clear and there is much Dynamics..... I actually lik it very good. I mean, My walkman beats the crap out of it in the bass department..... but the touch has a very clean and smooth output. With decent headphones it just sounds great. Could be better, but you can't have it all right? The downside is....... that my ipod (which I have for a week now) is back with apple for repair already. The darn thing just froze on me!! :@:@ It's a really great device. Multi touch works awsome and it's very sexy. But this really bugs me! So now I'm going to see for myself how good that famous apple service really is. I'll let you know... greetz

well, I'm a bit sceptical. The new ipod line-up is fairly good. The shuffle: no news about that. New colours is fun, bu that's about it. Yeah, the product RED is a good thing though!! The Nano: It looks like a squeezed Classic. Very nice to finally have video and the new interface. I think this would sell reasonable good. The classic: I think the big capacities at such pricings are very competitive at the moment. it's in essence the same as the nano. But I thin it'll find an audience. The touch: well, the most exciting product of the show. It's like an iPhone without the phone. Good device. Just hoping the touch screen problems are solved now. cover flow rocks, and the interface is cool. But I wonder how the ease-of-use would be? I must say that I have respect for apple in pumping 16GB Flash into a MP3 player!!! afaik they're the first manufacturer to do so. Now I'm very positive about the UI and the design of the new ipod touch. But I wonder if they finally have put in a decent EQ, or some sound enhancements. And wich SoC did they use? Sigmatel? Samsung? Telechips? NEC? or perhaps..... back to Portalplayer????? (I hope not, they sucked big time) And what's the AMP like? What's the output power? What's the SNR? I know this is all a bit technical crap, nut I don't judge a product for it's looks. My D2 doesn't look very good. (has a touch screen too though) but it I have respect for what is under it's hood. 74mW AMP, Wolfson CODEC and Telechips TCC7809 SoC. IF the iphone has at least good specs lI would buy it. But for know I'm sticking to D2 and Walkmen. greetz!

Well guys, I've been absent for a while, but in the meantime I've bought a Cown D2. I'm just wondering, since I thought some people enjoyed my comparison review between Sony Walkmen and Creative's Zen V:M, If you guys would be interested in a comparison review between NW-S703, NW-A805 and Cowon D2. I'm just asking, because if nobody is interested It would be a waste of time. For people who never heard of Cowon: Cowon is a Korean manufacturer of DAP's. They are the creator of the very well received Cowon A2 PMP. In general, Cowon players are considered as very high-quality DAP's with an outstanding soundquality. Most of the Cowon Devices have BBE technologies implemented (www.bbesound.com) and afaik they all run on Telechips (wich is also korean) SoC's. A downside on many Cowon players is the sloppy User Interface. They could do way better in that department. SQ is top notch, but the UI is not that good. For more information check www.cowon.com Why did I bought this player? Because I switched to mac a few weeks ago and Sonicstage doesn't work on Mac OS X. This player is UMS. I even could try to take PSP too in my review. Just let me know If you guys would be interested. greetz

Great review!! To me it just seems an exact copy of the NW-A808 but without sonicstage and atrac. I have just one BIG question that I want sorted out. Is it MTP or UMS? in other words, does it still only work on Windows or could I use it on my Mac too? (or perhaps linux) thx!! greetz!!

Hi guys, Well.. it's been a while since my last posts here. But damn what a changes so suddenly?! Sony closing Connect music store, ditching Sonicstage and the most unbelievable Killing Atrac?!?! My all-time favourite codec has been murdered!! So what am I gonna do now?! From now on... I'm gonna have to live in a world without sony defending it's atrac format, and forcing everyone to use (or at least try) it's not-so-good sonicstage. Sony went ''open''. I now can have a true walkman with treu Drag 'n drop support, support for AAC, WMA, WAV and MP3 but good old Atrac is gone! I must say, I have to get used to this. But I think that this is THE best step sony could make. Now they only have to let the world know that they've gone ''open''. Advertise the sh*t out of the new walkmans. I'm very proud of sony. Good work guys!!!!! I must say that I have had a couple of changes myself. I've switched from a Windows PC to an Macbook and worst of all, I left my walkman. Since the Mac doesn't support sonicstage, my walkman(s) is (are) useless. It's a big shame, but that's the way live goes. I did find a very nive replacement for the NW-A805, wich served me outstandingly througout last year: It's a Cowon D2. Expandable memory with SD(HC) cards, touchscreen, WMA, MP3, Ogg, Flac and APE support. FM radio on it and everything. And the sound is outstanding. It uses BBE technologies in it and I went from a NEC ****** SoC (NW-A80x) to a Telechips TCC7801 wich is a 32-Bit, dual core ARM SoC that runs at 192 Mhz. The D2 also uses a Wolfson Codec: WM 8985. The D2 has a SNR of 95 Db and an output power of 74mW. So it;s been a time of changes, for sony and for me. I'll still be using my walkman from time to time. And you bet I'm gonna get the new ''open'' walkman as soon as it's coming to the EU. greetz

hi guys, it's been a while since my last post here, but here I am again time to sum up my sony products: Sony NW-A1200, sony NW-S703, sony NW-A805, sony MHC901AV, 3 x sony PCDP, sony Casette walkman (Old skool ), Sonyericsson S700i, K700i and V800i and an other sony mini hifi set. And If that isn't enough, I have also owned: MZ-N707, MZ-NH900, PSP, sonyericsson W800i and 2x sony MDR-EX71 So I think sony has had enough of my money. BTW, I LOOOOVE sony Vaio notebooks. (especially the TX series) But there's just one notebook out there that I love a little bit more: The Apple Macbook. As the matter of fact, I'm typing this message right on the brand new Macbook I bought 2 weeks ago. Don't get me wrong, DSP hasn't turned around in one of those over fanatic Apple worshippers during his absence. He still hates the ipod and now the iPhone too, but I must admit that the macbook (and Mac in general) has me a bit lovestoned. Allthough I must say the Vaio design still attracts me :$ ........... So DSP has something to dream about...............***If you could only run Mac OSX on a sony vaio**** greetz

well, I really do think NW-A800 sounds btter than NW-S700. I really found NW-S700 compared directly to NW-A800 sounded muddy and undetailled in some way. It's a bit like music playing in a vacuum. Also I found there was more hiss and litlle soundstage then NW-A800. I must say I have tweaked my NW-A800. First, I loaded new FW wich improved the overall soundquality in a surprisingly positive way! Then I tweaked the EQ. I listen to rock music, heavy metal, soft rock so very strong music genres. But I also listen to powerballads and normal ballads, or harmonic and acoustic music. These require a good soundstage yet a powerfull and clear detailled sound. So this is what I set my NW-A800 (FW 1.02): EQ: CB +3 / +2 / +1 / +2 / +1 / +2 CS: on VPT: off DN: off DSEE: off Somebody mentioned the clipping phenomen. I've read many articles about this to, especially since I'm with a radio station. But the equalizers on DAP's are actually kind of ''made'' to be pushed up. The manufacturer knows people are gonna push them up, so they made sure that it's possible without clipping or any other distortions. One company does this better than another. But I find My NW-A800 doing a goo djob at it! greetz
