  1. Thanks guys. I'll try it when I get home tonight. I didn't think the deck alone would have enough power to provide a strong audio signal.
  2. (Still a newbie.) I'm trying to transfer my old cassette tapes to MD. Last night I hooked everything up: Line-out from Sanyo RD-5008 Tape Deck (2 RCA plugs) >>> Line-in to Sony STR-DE325 Tuner/Amp (2 RCA plugs) >>> Line-out from Sony amp (2 RCA plugs) >>> Line-in to Sony MZ-RH1 HI-MD (single plug). Result: No signal coming in to MD. (When I switch the function button on the front of the amp from Tape/MD to FM radio, with the same connections as above, the radio signal comes through to MD no problem.) Any help appreciated. Thanks.
  3. What is your definition of cheap?
  4. Are ipods capable of recording? If yes, how many and what are the models? If yes, can you edit the recordings on the ipod? If yes, can you record using microphone input?
  5. I haven't left it connected to the computer at all (I have a Mac). I've be charging for 2 hrs when the battery is depleted. I usually charge when the icon starts flashing. About 3-to-4 hrs recording and maybe 6-to-7 hrs playback times. Very disappointed. Luckily my cell phone charger has the same voltage and connection--a happy coincidence. (Real nice to have a back up thats smaller and less clumsy than the supplied cable and connectors.) Despite all that, I really like the RH1. Let me know more about the Solio.
  6. RH1 battery sucks. Please someone come up with a viable alternative!
  7. Don't you think that switching discs is a big part of MD's charm? Opening and closing the RH1; the sweet click of the tray as it prepares the disc for use; collecting, labeling and storing your data. It all requires just a little bit of skillful use of the hands. A dying art in a dying world. You can keep all your ipods. MD will always rule.
  8. I'm doing some basic line-in analog recording. CD player-to-minidisc. Is there a difference in clarity between these 2 options?: 1. Volume of CD player set high; minidisc recording levels set low. 2. Volume of CD player set low; minidisc recording levels set high. Which one will produce the cleanest sound?
  9. Cheers. I'll trade you for some sushi.
  10. Well said! I second that emotion and attest to being a recipient of aforementioned help.
  11. So far I'm very disappointed with the amount of power supplied before re-charging is needed. A few hours and it's empty. So I bought a couple of extras. How long should they last in storage? What is the shelf life duration for these batteries?
  12. I've had similar problems with my Sony DS70P t-mic. Right channel cutting out; static, etc.
  13. Was the AA clip-on a better option than the Macally is now?
  14. Not sure if I know what you mean. Can you elaborate on this?
  15. Before I come across as inept, please forgive me if I missed something on this elsewhere. Can someone please explain the difference between 80% charged and fully charged? The RH1 manual is not clear to me: when the 'charging/remaining time' goes out after an hour, this means 80%, right? To fully 100% charge, you then leave it plugged in for another 1hr or 2hrs (?) while the display remains off/blank, right? Is there a fully/partial charge indicator somewhere on the unit?
  16. I take it then that a digital optical cable is required? Toslink?
  17. Congratulations on getting what is fast becoming a collector's item. From a turntable, does a digital-out connection make a different type/quality recording than regular RCA line-out connections?
  18. Guitarfxr, thanks a lot for all this. As a newbie, I am grateful for your insight. The easy thing about this project is that it's just me playing solo (unaccompanied) so the variables are few. Essentially, I'm shooting for a very good quality field recording; I'm playing folk (dance) tunes and some original compositions (instrumental, no vocals) on the aforementioned acoustic instruments (no direct inputs). Besides my RH1 and mic, I have an old 6-channel Peavy mixer amp. Can you recommend a decent compressor/limiter--if they're essential at this stage?
  19. I know this is a little off the main subject, but I'd like some advice on choosing the right mic. I'm going to record solo acoustic guitar, banjo and mandolin at home with my RH1. All I have at the moment is an AT-PRO24. Based on what I've been reading, and considering my budget, I'm thinking of going with the AT-822. Would that be adequate to produce a professional level recording for cd release? Or would it really require a very expensive studio mic?
  20. I think I may have seen you explain this elsewhere in the forum. Could you give a quick set of directions again, or direct me to the link? Thanks.
  21. Sure would, as I have R37, 50 and 70. I've already sprung for one of the Chinese $40 remotes for my RH1 and hope it's gonna be ok. (Wish I'd seen the previous post re the Buy From Japan option before I bought.)
  22. Is the Sony RM-MC40ELK compatible with older MD players, e.g. MZ-R50, R70, etc.?
  23. Thanks a lot for your info. I'm recording some demos of my own banjo and guitar playing with a view towards putting out a solo cd. Minidisc is the perfect tool for preparation given the editing capabilities. I love it. I'll post a short follow up when I get some takes.
  24. Don't ever touch or use any cleaner on the lens. Use a can of air; it's used for keyboards and disk drives. Works a treat and requires no contact with the lens. See link. http://www.uline.com/Browse_Listing_6955.asp?pricode=WO513
